They use VDSL from what I know so probably not

        It's just a router so why not…?

        • Not sure why Im being downvoted. If you have a VDSL service you probably want a VDSL Modem/Router.

From what I read,TPG's FTTB service is provided over VDSL, unless you want to buy a router AND a modem or bridge the one that is supplied, you're better off buying an all in one.

I use the R7000 (the baby brother of this router) bridged to the modem that TPG supplied. Was very easy to configure (just changing one setting on the TPG modem - google for guides on Whirlpool). Everything works seamlessly, except for BitTorrent, which doesn't get full connectivity for some reason (yet still downloads super quick, hence why I haven't messed around with port forwarding or anything yet)

      • There was a thread on Whirlpool, but I'm easily confused. Would you mind linking to the actual post? Thanks.

        • https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2266152 was the one I used, but check which modem you got from TPG as the models differ..

        • @roadeh: Thanks. Mine's the HG630. I just turned DHCP off I think, and turned of Wi-Fi. The rest I still couldn't work out how to successfully allow VNC packets over the standard ports… Oh well!

      • Roadeh are you talking about the TPG FTTB service? I think TPG supply a Huawei modem.

  • Darn just picked up the ASUS before this deal came up!

For those that like to tinker how about dispensing with a router full stop and going down this path instead.

    http://blog.codinghorror.com/the-scooter-computer/

Add in a wireless card and it can become a fully fledged AP. From what I see these things don't need to be top end in terms of hardware and yet can outperform most dedicated routers on the market today.

Don't shoot the messenger…..just food for thought for the tinkerers.

  • Does woolies sell any gift card which can be redeemed at DSE? That'd take it to $198.55.

r8000 is just a r7000 with an extra 5 gig AC transmitter, however there seem to be more bad reviews for the r8000 compared to the r7000 - honestly depends how many AC devices you have…i would expect both to be very reliable routers

    • +1

AFAIK it just allows more streams on the 5GHz band, so unless you are doing lots of big transfers across your wifi constantly you probably won't notice much difference

    • I'd get r7000 for better 3rd party firmware support. If you need better performance, you really should look for a MIMO router.

      • I still use official firmware.
Which 3rd party firmware do you use? Name, Version, Link, please.

        • @bigoldtoo:

          Thanks for the link.
How is the wifi performance result comparing with factory stock?

        • @bylife:

I got comparable wan to lan throughput but I am only on adsl2 :/.

No wifi dropouts or loss of signal strength. Haven't done any lan speed tests, so I am not sure about that. Overall it has been very stable for me.

I am running the r7000 in AP mode behind a Asus AC-68u. I much prefer the Asus UI than the stock netgear one. :)

  • I have this router and it's super fast and super stable. It's definitely a steal at this price.

    • Second that.

It is good router, but my R7000 still works ok.
I will wait for next gen model.

    • R7000 is still my MVP, works seamlessly with custom firmware :)

      • Which custom firmware do u use?
I just bought the r7000, and am a total noob at it

        • Helli Coco1458 :)

        • I'm using xvortex with 205 days uptime.
The latest netgear firmware is a bit buggy

  • hi what time will the deal end today?

  • I have like a total of 2 devices that can connect to a 5Ghz band in my house, and neither of them really need priority access.

This router is massive overkill unless your home is flooded with devices that can connect to the 5Ghz band and those devices are heavily using the wireless.

  • no stock at all!!!!!!

Just Price Mached at Officeworks Bargain for $198. Thanks OP

    • They refuse to do price match because no stock now

    • Actually, I found dicksmith has stock in rosebud vic, so that officeworks Preston did price match for me! $198, bargain!

      • That's what I did too

  • Nothing left in Adelaide that i can find

Not just talking about Routers anymore. lol

  • Price matched at OW Campbelltown for $198.55.

  • Just price matched at Nerang Officeworks for $198

  • My local OW and HN both refused to price match because of the situation, they are classed as clearance stock according to them, which is one of their terms and conditions. I guess the local DS didn't have any and I can't get one delivered, so if they looked into it they would deny it based on those factors also.

  • Great Price, Cheaper than my Netgear R700 i bought last year, However i heard that there were some problems with this router. Don't know if true or not, Either way just bought 3 Cisco 3560-24PS

  • Does anyone have one of these successfully going through three or four solid brick walls? Previous routers I have tried haven't.

As someone that has 4 ASUS top of the line AC routers… I can assure you that one of them isn't going to be adequate for a large home, if it's double story… forget it. My house is full of black spots, hence now having one on each level, front and back. Those higher end ones seem to be less range.

I've also resorted to physically connecting most devices now.

  • Price beat by OW Darwin for $198.55

  • Did price beat at officeworks this morning $198.55, then a pricematch $209 at jbhifi.

  • This model doesn't have the Netgear Downloader module. Very disappointing.

  • Wanted to pick up one, one week too late damn it.
