    $50/month for 12 GB data

The $40 plan for 10 GB was better value…

You are effectively advertising a price increase since what was available until yesterday…

      • +1

        Nah it actually ended yesterday

Although I don't quite consider this merely "a price increase on an old promo". I would imagine the $40/mth for 10 GB for most people but I'd imagine there would be a small pocket of people that would pay an extra $10/mth for 2GB

        • +5

I don't quite consider this merely "a price increase on an old promo"

          $40/mth for 10 GB = $4.00 per GB

          $50/mth for 12 GB = $4.17 per GB

          = 4.25% price increase per GB…

        • @jv:

I know you meant on a "per GB" basis, but can you get the $40/mth anymore? When it was available, what was the extra cost per GB?

If it was $5/GB then I would that that one was a better deal. I just don't recall what the per GB cost was.

        • @illumination:

If it was $5/GB then I would that that one was a better deal.

it rolls over anyway, so for most people, they'll nearly always have > 12GB available each month…

so for most people, they'll end up paying an extra $10 per month on this plan, compared to what was available until yesterday.

          I don't believe advertising a price increase qualifies as a bargain…

        • @jv: Or… $10 for 2GB extra = $5/GB = 25% increase.

Considering all other features are same, and previous deal was first month free, this great deal completely pales in comparison. It should be cheaper.

        • Sorry my bad, I was thinking about the Optus one, and this is obviously Virgin -.-

        • @Utopian:

and previous deal was first month free

previous deal was 50% off for first month.

        • @Utopian:

its a 25% increase with only 20% more data

        • @Utopian: Optus targets such consumers.

Gotta be some appeal buying from an airplane carrier. : P

        • @jv: You're right!

  • -1

Seems like the data wars are on… haha

    • +1

more data at a higher rate than was available yesterday?

    • About time!

      • Telstra are still doing 5GB for $40 if you get shitty coverage on the Optus network…

        • +2

Pretty happy with my 20 gb with Optus for $100 with a 64 gb iphone 6S in the mix

        • +1

          @DrC:

as long as your happy with the coverage, I still have issues getting a good signal from Optus in some inner Melbourne suburbs as well as down the Peninsula…

        • +6

          @jv:

Down the peninsula? I thought you sat infront of your PC on ozbargain all day.

        • @jv: Optus is fine on the Peninsula. Couple of dead spots going from one side to the other, which all the carriers experience, other then that good solid coverage.

        • That's a decent deal JV, I am even considering leaving my Cap Encore legacy offering, but Telstra won't play ball and insist you are a new customer (or port to another carrier and then back again), which is a complete fark around that I don't have time for. Why do they make it so hard?

        • +4

          @Chthonic:

          I have a laptop

        • @crift85:

Optus is fine on the Peninsula.

          Not for me…

        • @Sir Casm:

          That's a decent deal JV

The increased their price today… cheaper yesterday…

        • @jv:

Well screw them both ways then. I'll happily keep telling their reps to eff off when they try and entice me away from Cap Encore to Freedom Plus or whatever it's called.

        • +1

@DrC: They gave me a 6S Plus 64Gb on the same plan same monthly payment!

        • @jv: Make sure your phone is compatible with all the Optus bands.

        • -1

          @machej:

Make sure your phone is compatible with all the Optus bands.

          iphone 5S

        • +1

@DrC: and that has just increased to $103 (Iphone 6s 64GB with 18GB) if you don't get the $10 discount

        • @jv:

Their coverage is near useless on the train, esp at Ascot Vale station.

        • @rorymeister:

Their coverage is near useless on the train

At some places yes, at others no…

If you get good reception on Optus, it makes sense to get 10GB rather than 5GB with Telstra. (Telstra also don't have rollover and charge for international calls and other services)

I've also found Optus 4G in noticeably faster than Telstra 4G in the CBD.

        • @jv: I have no issues in Sorrento or the inner inner east!

        • @DrC:

I have no issues in Sorrento

Get lots of black spots between Red Hill and Dromana.
Where Telstra phones get good coverage, Virgin gets about 1 bar…

        • @jv: No doubt Telstra has the better reception, they just have (had?) godawful offers when I last looked…

        • @DrC:

they just have (had?) godawful offers when I last looked…

I was about to get their $40 for 5Gb offer until Virgin came up with $10Gb for $40

I prefer a more experienced mobile carrier

    • Look out for the Mobile Virgin Conversion Van. Becoming rare.

    • They're owned and operated by Optus…

      • +1

        Its a joke….I think.

    • +1

      Qantas mobile?

  • -1

I'm switching back to optus or telstra. 3 days of virgin and I have had enough.. On my 1 hour commutes to work and back (sydney CBD) I get medium to good 4G signal, the kicker is actually trying to get anything to load in a decent frame, if it all… I stream Spotify and it buffers a hell of a lot. 4 days ago I was on a post-paid plan with optus, getting similar signal to right now, except speeds are reflecting the actual signal.

    • +14

      Virgin is Optus though…

      • -1

I think Virgin buy from Optus. This means that if they don't buy enough bandwidth then it will go slow.

I have the same problem at the moment with iinet and my ADSL. Telstra own the hardware and iinet haven't paid for enough bandwidth. Once it is peak time it is useless…

        • +1

Na Optus actually own Virgin. Exact same company, an employee of Optus we know now works at Virgin, just cause they told him to.

        • +1

          @deanylev:

          It's like Qantas and Jetstar

More pronounced differences in speeds for 3G.

Little bit of discussion here but no conclusion for 4G data rates.
          http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2220231

      • That's one of my main points..

    • +6

I'm switching back to optus or telstra

virgin uses the optus 4g network

      • +1

actually giving you a +ve for this comment!

  • Can you use Virgin as a hotspot from iPhone (4S)? I heard that some mobile vendors convinced iPhone to remove hotspot features when their SIM card is in. I hope it's not the case for Virgin.

  • Is it just me or are the $50 and $60 plans providing exactly the same product at a different cost…

    http://www.virginmobile.com.au/Shop/Nano-SIM

  • Still a good deal considering the $40 for 10GB is no longer available. This is just a 4.25% increase of the previous deal. But if you always hit that 10 - 12 GB range, then this will become a cheaper option considering the high excess usage if you get pass 10GB.

  • So in the current War of Mobile Data 2016, which provider has the best value and coverage? Vodafone?

    • Probably Optus!

  • Telstra will be cheaper this Sunday before voda resumes the heavy lifting ($3/2G).. My 70.2% off sims just shipped now via phonebot.

  • +1

Just got off the phone to Vodafone, after almost 2hours of trying to switch to Virgin, VF have given me $60/month for unlimited calls inc unlimited international calls to (70 countries), unlimited text + 12GB of data…on top of all that they applied a $22 discount/month

bringing it down to $38/month STOKED…good on you vodafone! Had to speak to the disputes resolution team manager.

  • ^Nice, you can pretty much just complain on the live-chat service for a few minutes and get a better deal. I got the double data 12month $40 6gb plan for $35 a month.

Not hard at all, definitely try bargaining with them and see what they can offer you.
