        • @cDNA: I'm neither of those lol

        • @tomleonhart:

I'll take your word for it. I just like giving my friend a hard time over his obsession with Japanese culture.

    • My most used and heard phrase when I was in Japan in December. Everyone is so polite!

      • "Irashaimasen!"

        • +2

Ahaha, the 'n' you added at the end completely changes the meaning

    What a small travel window!!

They're trying to fill up planes on a few specific days where there's still some empty seats.

    • +11

Not sure if you're joking or not, but just to be sure - those are sample dates. There are actually lots of other available dates.

      • no i wasn't joking. that's awesome, thanks!

  • ~$490pp for 5 people from Sydney to Tokyo return in October is a great deal, shame it's not during school holiday! I'm kind of regretting booking a trip to Hawaii in April now, I'd much rather go to Japan!

    • Just fyi October is hurricane season.

      • +1

The typhoon season in Japan runs from May through October, with most activity from July to September.

I'd still rather be in Japan than Hawaii but my wife loves Hawaii and it's been 10 years since the last time we went so happy wife, happy life.

        • Can't go wrong really, Hawaii is amazing

  • +1

    Hey Store Rep,
Not sure if you would know, but do you think there will be flight deals to JPN for December? Any tips appreciated, ty.

    • +1

      Hi Timdozer,

Sorry, but I don't know when the next sale will be on.

  • +1

That would be right, I booked flights probably 2 weeks ago to Japan from Brisbane,

However I paid $893 return for a direct flight, with Qantas Airways (Direct) To late to change anything as I've booked in hotels etc now..

    • +5

Don't you just hate that? on the up side… have a great trip!

      • I'll call the flight company I booked through and ask! I just did a search on the website and found the exact same flight for $741 return!

So we originally paid $1786 but could of paid $1482 Saving over $304 ! :( Lets see if they can do anything for us

        • You can try but I think these price match usually happen at the time of booking. If there is a $50 cancellation fee or something quite low it may be worth you cancelling and rebooking a cheaper flight.

        • @piggyfund: Booked through BYO Jet, they said that unfortunately it's already been ticketed (Unsure what that is) She said that to cancel the fare it's $150 per ticket so not worth the hassle,

That's a bit of a bugger! I'm wondering if I call qantas directly if they have a different policy?

        • +1

@Gomo: You can try but I doubt it - they will refer you back to your agent as you didn't book with them directly. I think ticketed means the eticket has already been issued. Depending on when you are going to save some money start changing money now as I feel our $$ will only get worse. I was there for 3 weeks in Dec and I could see the conversion rate getting worse and worse in that time period.

        • @piggyfund: Yes! I purchased a travel bank card that secured the YEN rate in :)

In saying that look at the 1 Year Graph http://www.xe.com/currencycharts/?from=AUD&to=JPY&view=1Y

Quantas said they couldn't do anything for me, and said to deal with the agent directly for any changes etc, oh well… might of been a different story if I booked through Qantas directly but at the time there was a $80 difference.. so I booked with BYO Jet

        • @Gomo:

Did you pay by credit card? Your card might have price protection feature on it.

        • @nightelves: Yes paid via credit card, paid some ridiculous $30 fee for doing so.. lol I don't think I'll be able to get myself out of the current booking and re-book for better prices,

Once fee's and cancelled fees are taken out I'll probably be worse off!

        • Went to America last year, a week after I booked flights I found my whole itinerary (5 flights in total) for $500 less than what I paid. My parents were also in the same boat with slightly different travel dates. I called up Delta, complained a few times and managed to get our tickets resissued so got some eCredits for $400.. so only lost about $100. My parents only got credit for $71 each so they overpaid quite a bit more than I did :(

    • +3

At least you had 2 weeks… I bought mine yesterday!! I feel gutted.

      • +7

Next time our trip will be based on a ozbargain post HAHA

        • +2

That's how I booked my last Japan trip

      • Gah!!!!

      • +1

        Price protection from credit card

        • +1

Guaranteed Pricing Scheme: For peace of mind when you’re shopping – and to guarantee the best price – if a Platinum or Diamond Awards cardholder discovers an item advertised in a printed catalogue at a lower price, they can make a claim for the difference, so long as it’s within 21 days after purchasing with your CommBank card. More details here.

Looks like neither of the cards I hold! Oh well :P

        • @Gomo:
Yeah that's what I was referring to.

        • +1

@nightelves: Never heard of it, but guess I was unlucky :) You win some you lose some!

    • 2004 i pay over 2000 to go japan. last year i pay 750 for 2 people.

  • +1

i feel you ozkiwi. could have saved $450.

  • Almost the dates I want, now just to wait for the next sale :)

    • To get it cheaper … or to get better dates?

      • +1

Later dates. Want after November. Prices are great and unlikely to have different dates within the current windows.

        • usually no sales after November. it's peak skiing season..

        • +1

@elcheapoinoz: Last time I got a sale price and it was travel in Dec. Paid less than $500 return Mel - Narita, direct. It's the $0 return special. Its possible right up until the week before xmas I think.

        • @piggyfund: sorry, should have said, the end of december.

  • +1

If I hadn't already paid $320 return from GC for tickets in July then I'd be all over this

  • Surprisingly it looks like most of the fares are sold are very few cheap fares are available, mostly on wednesdays etc and weekends are completely sold out.

Did Jetstar already have a sale for this period or something?

    • +1

Yeah they did last year and it overlapped with the period of this sale. I always think if I was retired or on a gap year I'd be all over these deals. Not just Japan, all these deals.

  • Dam, so cheap.

Need to check what dates are still available for this price.

  • +1

Thanks OP, been kicking myself since the last Jetstar 2 for 1 deal that I told friends about.

I booked 18th - 27th May and they're over at the same time so now we can meet up over there and see the sights in one of the most awesome places on the planet!

    • You think that's bad. I had two return tickets to Japan for $800 including taxes during Cherry Blossom season and we weren't able to go because missus couldn't take time off. So gutted!

      • Bugger! Did you have to lose the entire fare cost?

        • Nah it was on hold with Jetstar. Had 9 working days to pay for it so I ended up letting the ticket expire.

  • +2

    Thanks OP!

Just booked 1st Dec-15th Dec for $438 return from Melbourne!

  • how are your experience with JetStar before? I read few disappointing stories on the news, but could figure out if that was just people paying budget fare but expecting anything but, or it's really disappointing..

    • +4

I've flown 8 flight legs from Cairns to Tokyo, never a delay/cancellation. How much more do people expect out of a direct flight for ~$700?

    • I did this exact trip recently and I would say it wasn't great but hey, I'm still alive so wasn't that bad.

    • +1

I flew with them a few times overseas from Melbourne and have to say that despite a reasonable onboard service and pretty old seats, their flights are pretty much on time (except for a domestic flight from okinawa to osaka that got delayed for two hours) and for the price , I can afford a few more nights in better accomodation. In japan, they are precise so not good when you are late for connections.

  • any bangkok flights?

  • How much extra do you normally pay for luggage? 20kgs for return Syd-Osaka is $112 according to expedia. Is this about right?

    • If you get the bundle, you get 20kgs for $90 (with food 1 way) and when I went in November, it was $90 for another 20kg from memory..

    • +2

I added a 25kg suitcase for $70 return from Melbourne - Tokyo (on Jetstar website). And you have the 7kg on board luggage. But from experience they are very strict with it … very strict … so not even a kg over.

  • +11

Guys when you're in Japan, just withdraw money from a 7 eleven ATM using a citibank everyday account card. No fees, best rates, sometimes even higher than market rates.

    • +2

haha, this saved my life when I was down to my last 1000 yen.

      Good suggestion !

    • I did this and was getting the best rate as I did exchange a little in AU and got an extra 8 cents to the dollar using Citi. This bank card takes about 2 - 3 weeks to arrive so plan ahead. highly recommended. You can use it at Japan Post ATM as well.

  • +1

Its an extra $35 for 20kgs up to $70 for 40kgs respectively. Guys just remember this is only the fee for the flight, there's also jetstars hidden extras, such as baggage fee, booking fee and seat fee, not a huge deal extra but still would be good to know the full price of a trip up and back.

That being said, ive got my flights booked :) 18/5 - 8/6 for $462

  • This is such an epic deal. If your looking at this and thinking - maybe. I would just jump in and book. For the range of times available and that its a direct flight, this is really good. I was looking at visiting Uluru mid year and that alone is 450-500 return - for about 1/3 of the distance and its domestic on Jetstar. Crazy.

  • Always so expensive from Perth :(

    • Perthian complaining about flight prices to Asia!

    • Get a platinum edge Amex card (via a no yearly fee deal) and use a free domestic return flight to another city in conjunction with a flight from this offer.

  • Ok … the flight is sorted …Thanks a lot! Good deal! Now I need hotels :-) Pretty expensive over there … especially when you travel with kids.

    • AirBNB all the way

    Be warned!
Japan is a very addictive substance.
Common side effects include, but are not limited to:
    - compulsion to thoroughly clean your hands before every meal
    - wanting to remove your shoes when entering a house
    - realising how sub-standard everywhere, and everyone else in the world is
    - always choosing the made in Japan option when shopping
    - allowing people to exit the train or elevator before attempting to get in
    - developing annoyance at people for pronouncing words incorrectly, such as: sake, edamame, yakuza

    • What's your take on the word 'karate' and why do you have a need to say the word yakuza? ;P

      • Karate is another frequently mispronounced word, but it didn't come to mind when I wrote the comment.
Not sure what you mean about the "need to say yakuza".

        • Yakuza rarely comes up in conversation? at least my group of friends. Also .. isn't there only 1 way to say it?

        • +1

@piggyfund: I grew up thinking it was pronounced like "yakoozah" only to find out it's more like "yakuzah"

        • +2

I say Yakuza as Ryū ga Gotoku. :P

        • @roseyhead: oh right. Like how Aussies say Arigatoooo

        • What about how people pronounce "nareeta" instead of Narita.

      • going to grab the hand of the wrong Japanese wife :)
      • Learning the hard way not to insult mother inlaw with bad Japanese.
  • +1

Jetstar has published some good Japan fares today.
$149 from Cairns to Narita. Mostly in September I think. Check jetstar.com

  • Any idea how long this sale will last? I've got a couple of friends I want to go with but getting them all on the same page won't be easy

    • +1

I'd say until sold out - so a few days max.

  • -1

Given where the oil price is at the moment, the prices for these long flights aren't that great.

  • Some good suggestions for itineraries: http://www.gojapango.com/tokyo/tokyo_itinerary.htm

  • Living in Perth IS suffering.

Any chance of prices or sales going on that'd see me *return south of $600 or there about in say, August?

  • If you love ramen, there's a place in shibuya and shinjuku called ichiran, oh my gosh, it's heaven! Place is always packed, sometimes you have to wait for an hour. It's a one of a kind experience. Wish there's one here. My mouth waters even just by writing this comment. :)

    • Ichiran is a nationwide chain (and yes, we love love Ichiran too)

  • I'm an old noob with searching for flights, do you actually have to dep/ret on those listed dates, or can we select a different return date??

If someone could help please, just searched for Perth to Tokyo anywhere between 28th March to 23rd April (allowing at least 2 weeks over there) for 2 adults, what would be our best option, value?

    Thanks in advance

  • Thanks I want that flight.

Booked for myself, wife and unborn son in October. Trying to book a flight with a person that hasn't been born yet is like pulling teeth.

I called up Jetstar to ask how to do it online and they kept asking for the child's birthday. I kept explaining that he hadn't been born yet…painful.

Anyway, it'll be my first time back to Japan in 5 years. Very excited. A few days in Kagawa to visit the J-family and a week in Kyoto.

    Hisashiburi Japan.

Now I'm holding out for a decent dealio on a flight to London from Sydney to visit my family in August.

  • Would anyone let me know why I can't find the low price from Sydney?

  • Damn I missed out, do you think they'll be another deal for dates in September? Or $1000 Return with Qantas is the best I'll get?
