Now, I know this is a $600 TV and have set my expectations appropriately but can someone advise if this is a decent TV?

Nothing fancy but it's it ok? It seems OK.

    • I would def go in store to have a look before buying :)

      • For sure, just wondering if anyone knew anything.

It looks good but I have also set my existence for what I can reasonably expect from a full HD, 50" smart TV for 600 bucks 😀

i bought a soniq tv when i was a uni student.
some people claim that you can tune these to some decent picture but i think thats bullshit.
the picture was crap, washed out over bright colours - you always get the feeling that something is off.
was hoping to see some comments here about this tv - maybe things have changed as that was a few years ago. the price seems good for a bedroom tv

          @millusions:

I went and looked at one today, it looks pretty good, especially for the price. I'm going to grab one.

  • Guess its an old Sony panel?

Last soniq I had died after about 8 months, was stuck in standby, apparently it happened a lot to that model. The one before it is still going 3 years on. They're a hit and miss I guess

      Spot on.

This is essentially the case with most generic TVs, different models (often sourced from different suppliers/manufacturers for rebranding) will yield different outcomes. We have an old 32" still going strong, friends & family have other models also going great after varying periods of time; yet some others we know have had sketchy models they've returned with mixed results.

Warranty & ACL is the key here, IMHO give them a go, if it's not of merchantable quality or fit for purpose then get a refund.

For the price Soniq are fabulous TV's. If you wanted state of the art picture quality and precise colors you wouldn't be looking at a soniq tv anyway. If that is your main concern then spend the money on a brand TV. Having said that the picture on Soniq is good and adequate for watching TV etc.

I have a 48" Soniq and it cost $400 and it blew me away that such a cheap TV was this good. I also have a 55" LG 3D SmartTV which cost 4x as much and has noticeably better picture quality.

From casual observation, I think some of the Soniq models have a passable picture, while some are quite washed out.

Also, beware that although the TVs run Android, they don't have the Play Store so you're not able to add apps like Netflix, and you're not able to rent or buy shows from Google. If you wanted those features you could buy an add-on Android TV box for $100-400.

Thanks for the heads-up, that would actually be the deal-breaker for me if I was considering one…stuffing about with .apk's just to get functionality would not be my preference.

      • Yeah, the dude in JB told me that today. Bear in mind though that you can hook it up to a PC, which is what I'll be doing.

    • The Play Store app is on this tv.

      • huh, he said it wasn't. oh well, happy to be corrected on it.

        • No well they sound like they know what they're talking about but they don't really these days :(

I have the Soniq 48" and couldn't be happier. Yes it's limited on what apps you can in store but most all the latest gaming consoles have netflix, stan ect
Sound is very quiet but for the price we paid i couldn't be happier.

Go down in store and have a look but keep in mind this is a TV that is nearly half the price of rivals of the same size.

Here I am using a 50" Samsung Plasma still from 2007! :P No issues with it so I'll keep using it

  • We have a about 10 years old soniq lcd. Never missed a beat, worked better than what I would have expected

Soniq are rubbish tvs. You can get better for cheaper

    • I await your proof.

      • Onix UHD tv from Target was better and cheaper
        Soniq is crap. Crap

  • Can all these 'Smart TV' be updated and loaded with custom apk? They usually just comes with standard app like YouTube and Facebook which isn't really of much use.

    • Yeah i am sure you can do that for some android tvs. I did on my no brand smart tv.

      • Is there a guide somewhere to do that? Thanks.

        • +1

Basically just download the apk file from internet and save it on a usb drive then use the smart tv to read the usb and install from there.

        • @arctan:
Cool, will try that, thanks arc.

  • I have a Soniq 48 which I use to watch only HD content and I cannot complain about the picture quality at $400. Goes without saying that if you need better go for other branded and expensive tv's.
