I wonder how many people buy a $29 pool only to find out later that by law they are required to invest $$$$ in a pool fence before they fill it…

      Just fill it to 300mm..

    • by law they are required to invest $$$$ in a pool fence

Oh, its actually much more ridiculous than that. When I asked my local coucil (anonymously, of course, see https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2039493 ) I was informed I needed a building permit for any pool. Yes, even one of these.

Then there is the compulsory verge bond, inspection fees, and forms, including the "NOTIFICATION OF SWIMMING POOL / SPA REMOVAL" at the end of summer, which means another inspection to verify.

Don't you just love local government?

      Just fill it to 300mm..

No. If it is capable of being filled deeper, you are supposed to get approval.

      • I just measured….my bathtub is deeper than 300mm

Did you see that masters deal on the weekend on the fence paneling?

        • The Swimming Pools Act describes a swimming pool as an excavation, structure or vessel:
          • that is capable of being filled with water to a depth of greater than 300 millimetres
          • that is solely or principally used, or that is designed, manufactured or adapted to be solely or principally used for the purpose of swimming, wading, paddling or any other human aquatic activity.

So best ask your lawyer if bathing is a "human aquatic activity".

I suppose fish ponds and ornamental ponds are exempt?

    • I have a very protective dog (Imagine a Boxer/Labrador cross) that will keep any trespassers out, little kids, big kids, even council inspectors. If an inspector can get in my pool (If I had one), without restraining my dog, Good luck to him, but he should bring a good 1st Aid kit. ;-)

  • What if I buy one of these pools and use it as a 'fish pond'?

So stupid how they expect you to treat a temporary above ground pool as a permanent building structure where you need to hire engineer and what not…

Even with all this pool fencing requirements…you still read about kids drowning in traditional inground pools which all must have fencing. Go figure how a fence saves lives if the parents are going to put a kid next to or in a pool and walk away.

  • I saw a few today at Kmart Glendale.
