The Topbuy site says it's ex-lease.

I will never again buy from TopBuy, their warranty handling is atrocious, especially with grey-import items.

  • +5

4 hours battery life when new.

    • This is not totally new, it's refurbished. Essentially a reconditioned returned for warranty (second hand) laptop which Dell has repaired. It's not the same as brand new never used before shrink wrapped straight from the factory. Some manufacturers don't seem to recondition these laptops very well either (Quality Assurance fail). Who knows how stuffed up the batteries may be.

So when buying this don't expect to get brand new boxed quality. Expect to get some thing possibly dodgy.

      • +1

Refurbished by who though? A Dell refurbished refurb has a Dell warranty. I wouldn't be guessing this is the case with Topbuy and you really don't want to be dealing with these clowns should/when this fails. This model was garbage when it was new.

        • True. It could be a refurb by the seller. There's a big difference between seller refurb and manufacturer refurb.

      • +1

either way 4 hours is short for a new ultrabook.
I think we all know what refurbished means.

Horrible form - that frame - yeuk

Prefer this over the Toshiba deal posted, both these aren't that greater deals considering the status of refurb or ex-lease. This at least is full HD touch (on a slightly smaller screen) and has a SSD but I guess it's offset by reportedly poor battery life and non-expandable RAM. Pity because even at $500 it would be a steal with 6-8 GB of memory and at least eight hours battery life, as is not that much of one.

    • +1

I got a refurbished Toshiba in November last year, besides the box stating "refurbished by Toshiba" you could not tell that it had ever been used before. Zero blemishes or cosmetic imperfections, cost me $800…

  • wow very similar spec with the LG ultrabook deal but just less memory and more weight. but almost HALF price and TOUCHSCREEEN.
memory RAM is expandable to 8GB?

    • +3

      From Notebookcheck:

4 GB of dual-channel DDR3L-RS 1600 MHz RAM, which is soldered to the motherboard (and thus not able to be upgraded)

[EDIT] On further inspection, it's the 3 months warranty that's a bit of a worry, and ssd which has been reformatted (and possibly used to death).

I was going to grab one from Topbuy, but heard bad things about them:

    http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1138513

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/50481

Not sure if anyone has had any recent dealings, but maybe if you trust in the Paypal refund system, it may be the safest option in case of dramas.

    • this! , most of the time better to get an Australian supplier or just local because of the hassle

    • +3

You can get this from mwave.com.au for $449 plus $12 shipping (at least for me in syd) and mwave are pretty good to deal with in my opinion.
I have bought 3 refurbished i5 laptops from them for under $300 each. not this model though.

      • How do you find the overall condition of the refurbished models? Many marks/blemishes, etc?

        • +1

Sorry for the late response. All 3 I've bought looked basically brand new. However one of the batteries was holding a maximum of 60% of its original charge but that's to be expected and I ended up buying an extra large battery for $40 on eBay. Being that they were business models there hundreds of new batteries for sale.

  • That's a great price for what you get regardless…

  • Has anyone used this and can comment on its usability? Vs a Surface 3?

Also is this Aus stock or grey import?

  • +1

Mwave is obviously a preferred store over topbuy. However saying that, there's no way I'd buy this. Look at the design. Would you be comfortable buying a refurb of this? The screen in the frame that spins around. I'd be surprised if it lasted out its 3 month warranty.

    • We have two at work, they're at least two years old and have no problems with the rotating hinge. The whole frame feels solid.

I bought this last year for an early Christmas Present for me. I got it with the famous Ebay 20% off for around $425. It came with Win 10 but after a week it started to freeze - i put it down to poor drivers for win 10. I reformatted and put Win 8.1 on - never looked back. Starts up in 15 seconds battery is fine for me - at least 5 hours usage. I bought it for web, emails, photo's, office, controlling my media etc… no game play so cant comment. I am very impressed for the $.

This is a fantastic machine - I have been using it since Oct 2013, and it is still going strong. (the only issue is that I have damaged the headphone port). The keyboard is excellent and it is very well built. For the price, it is a complete steal - assuming the quality of the refurbs is good.

In response to some posters above -

The hinge is very sturdy, and it serves the primary task of being a laptop amazingly well. The touch feature is useful sometimes, and the ability to flip it into a tablet is good for the occasional document review or to play games (e.g. backgammon). Running Windows 10 - no issues.

Battery life is pretty good on a new machine - not sure about refurbished. Regularly could get 10 hours earlier on with power saving, but haven't really used the battery much since then.

    • From some reviews, they complain about the weight when used in tablet mode. How do you find it? Is 1.5kg too heavy to carry/use for long?

Also how does Win 10 run with only 4gb (not upgradeable) RAM for use with Office apps, etc?

      • +2

Its not the best in tablet mode a bit big and clumsy, but it still is very useful for the occasional tablet mode ie on the plane etc when space is tight. I use win 8 and it manages Office no problem - but i am a bit old school and i think we change computers way too quick my last desktop i had for over 10 years and it was still going strong on office - just needed a bit of TLC every now again.

      • Re: weight - you don't use it like a traditional table, holding it up. You place it on a surface, table, bench etc. 1.5kg is by no means portable. Not heavy to lug around, but would not want to hold it up to use.

Win 10 runs perfectly, including office etc. I found it actually runs better than Windows 8, both on battery life and performance. SSD is the major speed booster, and things launch instantly for me.

Top buy are woeful. They should not be listed here based on previous experience with them.

These might not even be in the country, they are a notoriously bad drop shipper. They sell stuff they don't have and then attempt the bait and switch.
It would be a HUGE risk to buy a refurbished dell from them. Particularly one that looks flimsy like that. You will get no help from Dell and you can guess at the help you'll get from topbuy. These are second hand goods that have been wiped down and the hard drives cleared. They aren't manufacturer refurbished and returned from Dell. Pretty much equivalent to buying second hand straight off eBay. Except that this seller has terrible form.

Nothing against you OP, but people need warning before buying from TopBuy.

If you must, then do not pay with anything except a credit card.

These have know issues with screen. Dell will replace even if out of warranty according to this page (US site though, I wonder if Dell AUS will replace?):

    http://www.pcworld.com/article/2109141/dell-replacing-displa…

    • Some of the comments to that article made it out like it wasn't an easy process to claim it out of warranty.

The 3 month refurb warranty should cover a major issue though.

  • NEWCUSTOMER10OFF code pretty much equates to free shipping on this one

    • Is that code for mwave or top buy?

      • topbuy

        • I decided to go with mwave once I saw they were refurbished, the anti top buy sentiment here seems widespread

  • The other question is, how do the new machines in this price bracket go? The Atom and Celeron processors, are they ordinary or actually decent?

    • +1

They are ok for basic tasks but not anywhere near as good as this, 2gb of ram is standard along with 32-64gb eMMC drives (note not equivalent to fast SSDs but still decent)

As someone who has had this (currently typing from it) for the past 2 yrs I can say this is a serious bargain.

The notebook is pretty sturdy and responsive. I do have the i7/256 version but it hasn't missed a beat.

I'd recommend this notebook wholeheartedly… and this is daily use for the past 2 yrs, not just a once off - I have a lot of windows & apps open (think 20-50 tabs on browsers + general office apps etc…). IT Nerd here so it's okay. My use is 8hrs at least per weekday & a couple of hours weekend use.

I can't say the same for Topbuy… the only thing i ordered from them i had to get them to cancel & reimburse me the amount (as i'd waiting around 1 month just to get an idea on when it was arriving).

The only things which I've noticed recently about the machine(and I say this only started occuring last weekend) but that sometimes the screen rotation doesn't align (mind you - i did a bunch of driver updates 2 weeks ago which i now regret).
Oh & the 256gb of mine is now only 2gb free… so 128 may not cut it for some.

    • Do they have this refurb? Wouldn't mind spending an extra couple of hundred for the better variant.

  • Looks pretty good in comparison to Dell's actual refurbished prices for similar notebooks.

    http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/product…

    • Those are much newer laptops with the cool minimal bezels though, so aren't really similar. The one in this deal came out in 2013.

      The Dell Outlet ones:
      XPS13/i5-6200U/4GB/128GB/FHD $1599
      XPS13/i7-5600U/8GB/256GB/QHD+ $1749

      • Can get new, $50 cheaper and more RAM for i5 version with microsoft store cashback on laptops right now. Dunno if this is actually worth posting as a deal? No cashback on the i7 though, lots of other laptops with cashback however.

        XPS13/i5-6200U/8GB/128GB/FHD $1549 (after cashback)

        http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msaus/en_AU/pdp/Dell-XPS…

      • Yeah but seriously apples to apples, this thing is 400 odd bucks to your 1600?!

  • can't comment on Topbuy but I can recommend the xps12 - I have had one for three years and it has been completely reliable so far. Typically runs all day 5 days a week hooked up to external monitors and keyboard. Say 5-10 hours a week on battery when out of the office - battery life still over 5 hours with moderate usage. Too heavy for comfortable use as a tablet in the hand, but great when you can rest it on something as when on planes, or watching a film in bed.

  • I bought a Samsung 50' plasma TV from them a few years back still going fine… I found the bad reviews after I purchased and was pretty worried for a few weeks prob wouldn't purchase from again tho for piece of mind

    • +1

What if you read a review saying "Bought a TV from them, had no problems with the transaction, the TV works great and I've been using it for the past few years"? :)

  • pssst….these are Greysonline auction stock

    • Any links to this stock?

      • no unfortunately, but I saw it a last weekend when they have IT Auction event on. Graysonline don't keep old "Ended Item" on their website.

I've had one of these (128gb version) for a few years as a daily driver. I do the basics, browsing etc and its fine.
I only use it in laptop mode when I need to do a lot of typing, otherwise the screen is flipped and angled, sitting on my lap.
I use a mouse as touching everywhere got tedious after a few months. Onscreen keyboard is good enough as there a few different layouts to choose from (and you can click the keys with the mouse).
    Currently running win8.1.
The only real issue I have is that firefox does not auto popup the windows OSK keyboard when you click a text box, you need to click the icon in the task bar. It is a FF issue as they abandoned metro integration way back.

  • Out of stock on both sites after I came back from a meeting. Now I want it even more! D:

    • Damn, my partner was waiting to make her decision on this, so annoyed she didn't buy it earlier

  • So if anyone has one they would be willing to sell, PM me :)

  • Hey so if anyone is still paying attention, I got mine the other day, happy with the model but I was unhappy with the state of the machine.

The issues I have are small scratch on the lid, key marks on the screen (only visible when off so maybe not such a big deal) and the soft touch on the bottom of the laptop is peeling off in a few places. Maybe I am just lucky but this is the first time I have purchased refurbished and not got a device that looked brand new. Rather disappointing as was to be a present (needless to say there was no box you could give it anyone in either, just bubble wrap)

    • You've been topbuyed. These are not manufacturer refurbished. Thy are second hand that someone has tried to clean up.

Manufacturer refurbs in my experience usually look and present as new.

If you're not happy, get them to take it back. Hopefully you paid with cc and can hold a chargeback over them. Marks on the screen are beyond the blemishes they list in the product description. Screen shot that now.

      • I actually got it from Mwave after reading the comments bout how bad top buy are. To be honest if the condition was better I would have no issues, but it definitely warrants disclosure when it's like this.

Paid with PayPal, so assuming I am covered through them?

        • Mwave, they have a better reputation. Tell them you're not happy, should be simple. Especially if screen marks aren't listed, top buy description only mentions potential case marks

    • Ordered 3 for the office from Mwave. Two of them were decent, the third was a little ugly.
To be fair, the description does mention cosmetic flaws. I did expect the third one to be "A grade with minor marks" like the first two. Oh well!
