Can you suggest a value for money Android phone 4G at least 6" large screen? Thanks

Edit:
Thanks a million for all the suggestions.
You are all very helpful angels.
I ended up paying A$359 for
Asus Zenfone 2 Laser ZE601KL
Happy with the purchase so far.
See my comments somewhere below on how to get it to work as a wifi hotspot and tethering.
Has 2 slots for sim cards and 1 extra slot for microSD.

I have been doing some research online and here are the features that would be desirable:

  • About A$300
  • Has an SD card slot for microSD
  • Battery is removable —- preferably
  • OTG support —- nice to have

I am currently looking at the following models:

Samsung Galaxy Mega 2 (6" screen)

Any other brand and model you would recommend?

Thanks a million.

    Phones newer than 2014

So maybe.. the LG G4 Stylus? It's close to 6 inches, has 4G bands and is a relatively recent phone. Ebay pricing suggests $330+

  • Hi OP, i think it would be good to wait till after February, seeing how the samsung s7 and lg g5 will be released on feb 21. Hopefully the prices of the older models will drop. Like you, I am looking for a phone with similar specs.

    • Im considering the Samsung J7, its $330 with shipping. 5.5", 1.5gb ram. I like how it is dual sim, which many locally bought phones lack. Seems decent but please feel to critique.

      • That phone doesn't strike me as anything special. 720p display, 1.5 GB of RAM, 1.5ghz Octa-core, is a pretty medium-end device.
As for it's features…. if you are used to Samsung Touchwhiz and can't live without it, that might be the only reason you might want this phone. That, and it's AMOLED display, which is more viewable in sunlight.

The Xiaomi Note 3 is a lot more powerful with 3GB of RAM, 1080p display, 2gh octa-core and 4000mah battery. It even does fast-charging, finger print scan unlocker and has an IR blaster — something the J7 lacks. Lower price too.

IMHO the Note 3 isn't flawless either, namely they took out the SD card slot and the removable back cover which prevents access to the battery. The previous generation Note 2 OTOH has SD card and a swappable 3000mah battery, which I guess is a major plus for some people.

        • Thanks scrimshaw. Based on your advice, I have decided against the j7. I will get a lg g4 when the price drops to $400 hopefully in march. The xiaomi looks tempting with the big battery life, but I have the xiaomi hongmi phone that I bought a few years ago and the huawei y550. Want to try a Korean phone now. What phone are you using?

        • @Cronut:

My daily driver is (still) the LG G2. I like smaller sized phones so it's what I carry with me all the time. Battery life is still amazing even after almost 2 years of use. Greatly miss MicroSD slot though.
I was eyeing the LG G4, but reports of poor battery life deterred me.

I also bought the Xiaomi Note 2, which is a nice phablet and carried for around 2 weeks, before I gave it away to a relative who needed an upgrade.

My backup phone is the Lumia 640 (which I rarely use because it doesn't support Pebble watch) and the LG Optimus 4x HD which is for testing different roms.

        • +1 for Xiaomi Note 3. I've had mine for a couple of weeks now and love it. Terrific value.

  • theres a zenfone 2 laser 6 inch model: http://m.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-ASUS-ZenFone-2-Laser-ZE601KL-Du…

I can't recommend from experience or anything due to a lack of decent reviews, but fulfils all your points (priced abit higher than $300).

All I can say about it is should be a fluid experience, battery life won't be up there with the greats as it uses a 3000mah battery (same as the 5.5 inch zenfones) but you could probably adapt a little with extra batteries, power banks, other fast charging solutions to top up a little. It does have a decent and new snapdragon chip (616). Software updates also will be a little hard to make a call on (pretty sure the zenfone 2 is still on lollipop, previous gen Zen 5 started on jellybean and is on lollipop now).

Thanks, I ended up buying this one you mentioned .

      Asus Zenfone 2 Laser ZE601KL

It has 2 slots for sim cards (dual sim) and an extra slot for microSD , unlike what some people claimed online.

To get wifi hotspot or tethering to work you need to try your sim card in slot 1 first, then slot 2, in that order.

Took me a few hours to figure that out.

Delivery from your suggested ebay seller was super fast (3 days , from east coast to Perth).

Very happy with the phone so far.

It came out end of 2015.

Wish I could buy it 1 year from now when prices dropped as I like buying phone that is one year old model (like buying a car) but needed a phone like last week so made an exception and buy it.

I am considering the zenfone 2 laser model 551 and would like to hear your thoughts as a few weeks has now past.
Some reviewers were disappointed with the laser assisted camera.

How have you found the Zenfone 2 screen in sunlight.
Benefits of 6" screen over 5.5".

        • I haven't seen the 5.5" screen Asus model.

But using my Samsung Galaxy Note 2 as a guide (5.5 inch screen also), my 6" Zenfone 2 Laser ZE601KL has longer screen (about 7% longer)

Both phone screens have the same width.

Under the sunlight , I can read newspapers on my web browsers in Zenfone 2 Laser ZE601KL without any problem, even with a layer of protective screen cover on top.

I don't know anything about the camera laser thing .

I am not a fan of pictures taking so I am not an expert in picture taking.

The pictures I have taken with the 6" Asus phone I think they are as good as those taken by my Samsung phone .

The only complaint I have so far is once in a while (once a week , so far) the screen of my 6" Asus will go black.

I think the phone freezes. But I have heard that freezes also happens to most Samsung models.

Just my 2 cents after almost 1 month of use.

          Hope it helps.

  • Have a look at the Sony xperia c5 ultra. Its $459 at mobiciti but doesnt have a removable battery.
