Great price, not as cheap as the previous cashback deals at shopping express but still cheap for a G8.

Good price. Too bad their ML10 listing isn't reduced. Would also be good if they could throw the ECC RAM up there!
This is in a different class to a ML server. Also no need for ECC RAM unless you are running business critical operations.
What do you mean by different class? They're a similar price range. I just bought the ML10 because it has more internal space for additional HDDs.
From my research, the ML10 is only compatible with ECC RAM. Pretty sure the G8 is the same.
If you buy this you`ll need to get some memory… HP G8 Mircoserver memory 16Gb for $174.40 delivered. (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/231244330773)
Damn that's expensive. Buy from Amazon, thank me later!
Price on amazon has gone up as well…
AUD177.94 if ordered via Amazon at the moment. I couldn`t find compatible memory any cheaper than this.
My bad didn't notice the ECC restriction :/
Can you not use Non-ECC like in the Gen7s ?
@ravennoir: nope
Why would we thank you? it's $us118 (~$au167) for 2x8Gb modules before shipping.
It was $99.99 USD two days ago, making it approx $140 AUD.
I
ve already ordered the memory from Futu - But it sounds like this might work - It
s non-ECC though… http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0091LG13O?ref_=pe_623860_7… AUD106.53 delivered.If you want to check G8 Hardware compatibility, this site is pretty good: http://homeservershow.com/forums/index.php?/topic/5639-proli…
Ram was $100 (might have been usd nit sure now) from amazon not long ago.
no optical drive - is that normal?
optical? hahaha
I mean, Id just rip it out anyway, so I dont know why I care :)
For backing up any media you have on optical disk. If you're an old coot you may have a few CD's or some such laying around.
don't forget that some drives may not fit. the microserver requires a 9.5mm drive.
it's standard
It has a slot for a slim-line optical drive. I installed (very loosely) a SSD in there for my OS (molex power splitter and another sata cable).
Booting from a USB/microsd card seems supported, however I had issues getting a CentOS install to boot a second time off the microSD card slot. YMMV, but the manual implies only HP branded microSD cards are supported/functional.
Would one of these work?
http://m.ebay.com.au/itm/151138359053It would… but not really necessary as the bay already has a faceplate
I used some 3m Velcro tabs to keep it in place,
http://i.imgur.com/ykZWVEr.jpgI ran my own sata data cable and the power cable was a weird little 4 pin so I just got a molex splitter and ran a molex to sata from the hdd bay power.
RAM prices are fluctuating a bit. This was $105USD delivered the other day for a 16GB kit: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/228559
I had a bunch of American dollars I needed to exchange so I went to the money exchange window at the local bank.
Short line, just one guy in front of me. He was an Asian guy who was trying to exchange yen for dollars and he was a little agitated. He asked the teller, "Why it change?
YesterdayI get two hunat dolla fo yen - today I get hunat eighty? Why it change?"
The teller explains, saying, "Fluctuations".
The Asian guy rants, "Well, Fluc you white guys too!"
Lol
Is this a NAS or a server?
Server
It can be either or both! If you don't know what this is then its probably not for you.

Thanks Mr Reynholm
If only one of the compatible Xeon chips were affordable. Anyone been able to find one at a good price?
I got an E3-1220Lv2 for US$125 from eBay. Not cheap, but affordable.
I paid $230 AUD for mine, so $125 seems reasonable.
I am now the happy owner of 2 of these units :)
Can anyone point to a noob friendly OS installation guide?
I've built any number of PCs over the years, most recently NUC PCs running W8 W10 and Linux - but these babies are a whole lot more complex!
It depends on where you want to install the OS.
HP Intelligent Provisioning assists with the initial hardware setup and OS installation.
Anyone who upgraded their memory would like to get rid of their 2GB one?
My Gen8 arrived today, just wondering if anyone else is having issues with registering for warranty on the HP Web site?
Mine is saying warranty expires 27/4/2016? Although my sever was new and unopened when it arrived it had been originally been delivered to Dicker Data who seem to be HP distributors so I assume Futu source from them? Will see if I can get it sorted with HP tomorrow but if anyone has already tried I'd be interested to hear how it went.
Thanks16GB RAM for these Microservers are back to $99.98 USD at Amazon: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/236140
