Need Streaming Netflix to TV. What Options for Me?

Hi,

I have a Sony SmartTV which has a built in Netflix app. No problem there. The issue is that the TV has no AV output and therefore I am limited to playing the sound via the TV speaker which has rooms for improvement to put in gently…

I have a chromecast which can be connected to my AVR and sound output is ok. the main issue is that I can't use my normal remote to control netflix. I have to use either an iOS device or an android device. so while I fix the sound bit I broke the remote control bit.

So I gather I can stream netflix by either buying a used AppleTV 3rd Gen, a used PS3, or a used Xbox360 or a roku. I don't have any of these devices.

Wondering which is the better way to go about it? AppleTV vs PS3 vs xbox360 vs roku v2?

Any other options I can consider?

Thanks

    Hi,

The NVidia Shield TV is brilliant. I still have WDTV (similar to Roku) and a sealed Apple TV.

See if you can connect your Sony TV to your Amp via HDMI.

Fortunately my LG Smart TV is connected via SPDIF to my Amp so anything that is playing on the TV can have the audio sent to the Amp. The NVidia TV Shield uses HDMI to get audio to the Smart TV.

  • Thanks for the Nvidia sheild suggestion. It is a great device but just outside of the price I am hoping to spend.

My TV does not have SPDIF nor HDMI out nor AV out of any sort. Very disappointed to know that I didnt do enough research before I bought the TV.

    • How about optical out?

Edit: member mind. Read your comment below about optical output.

I have a sony - it should have optical digital out but no analog. If RCA/3.5mm ausio out is what u want, You can just use the headphone jack at about 40% volume. You can set the audio to go throuhg both headphone jack and tv speakers, so no need to keep removing plug.

    You are welcome.

  • Thanks Pointless…I actually want the sound to come out of my AVR system…and no there are no optical output at all :(

Geez. How old is your Sony TV?? I didn't think they even made TVs anymore that don't have optical out or a HDMI ARC socket???

  • I have the Sony KDL-50W800B….it has HDMI input, RCA and composite input and an optical in I believe…I will double check.

Okay. crawl behind the TV….the Optical is actually an optical out..not an optical input…I think I can connect from the TV to the AVR now….I will get an optical cable to try.

Thanks for bringing up the optical thingy! :)

    • just grab the manual of the sony website just to make sure. Then you can see all your options :)

      • Thanks Bud. Not sure why I missed the optical output bit…I kept thinking it was the optical input…but like someone said I am not as smart as the TV…

        Lessons learned….
