  • if you buy a watch like this, please do yourself a favour and buy a box.
I think everyone should own an automatic Seiko at some point in their lives.

I am head over heals in love with my skx007.

A great read of the Seiko diver here for those that are interested: https://monochrome-watches.com/seiko-skx007-family-seiko-bea…

    • My friend needs a purely functional, not fancy, watch (so about $150). Is there any reason to want the box besides aesthetics? Safer shipping or something?

      • Its just a nice thing to have IMHO and not that expensive. Also safer shipping.

Over the years I have had a couple of Seiko Automatics. Both were incredibly inaccurate and I would need to set the time at least once a month. Some people say theirs is accurate, but it must be hit and miss. In comparison, the Citizen EcoDrive was similarly priced, but extremely accurate

Here is a whirlpool thread on the inaccuracy of the Seiko Automatics https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/815929

The '7s' seiko movement and the '114060' & '116610' rolex movement (both found in the rolex submariner) are two families of movements that are often compared and considered two of the most robust in the watch world (in terms of ruggedness and ability to keep chugging along in adverse conditions). One can be had for $50. The other for about $9000.

Disclaimer: I am a huge Seiko automatic movement fan.

114060 and 116610 are the Model Refs, the movements are Cal 3135/ Cal 3130. Ain't nobody buying a Sub for the movement. What you get with a Sub is top quality steel, great finish, and most importantly good resale value. I don't own one, and I have a skx007 that I love, but if I could afford that Sub, i'd go for it.

        • You probably know more about the movement in the Rolex than I do (and I own a 116610), I do know that it's been around for a long time and very reliable but not very attractive given that no one will see it without opening the case back. It's also very accurate, the tolerance is suppose to be within -3 and +6 second range per day. Mine runs at approx +2 per day when I checked it.

I wear it everyday and it's running about 2 minutes fast, last time I adjusted it was day light savings. No quartz accurate but very good nonetheless.

The Seiko skx007 is also legendary in it's own right (but less accurate) and supremely good value. I've owned a couple of Seiko's when I was younger and they are great watches, but yeah I love my Submariner Ceramic. Paid stupid money for it but it's honestly a great watch. The biggest difference between the Seiko and Rolex is the fit and finish, the bracelet of the Rolex is probably the best out there regardless of price.

I have a couple of cheaper watches, including Citizen, but since I got the Rolex, it hasn't come off my wrist.

Are they made of Valyrian steel?

Quartz watches are simply more accurate than mechanicals.

      • Yup. I would say kowcop may have damaged or magnetized his watch (unless he was expecting quartz level accuracy).

I have 5 watches with 7s26 movements and they are roughly all accurate to around 8 seconds fast per day at most. I think the most accurate mechanical watche (like a Breitling Superocean) are roughly 1-2 seconds/day. Coincidently, they say the most accurate movement you can buy is Seikos 'Spring Drive' movement.

Once, I accidently left my skx007 overnight on my magnetic money clip. Woke up to find it was reading 6 hours behind. I simply gave it a shake and put it on my wrist, and it was back to its usual time keeping.

Had 3 Seiko 5s. All were accurate enough. Look for a 7S36. I think they are the best for the money.

        • @tonyjzx:
The 7s36 only has two additional jewels over the 7s26, which are non-working so its actually not any more accurate (and visually identical from the back clear cover).

The 4R15 and 6r15 are two other movements Seiko have that are relatively recent, but again not a huge advantage over the 7s movement (the 15 movements have a few hours longer power reserve).

Also, the 7s26 & 7s36 movement are so easy to work out should you ever need to remove them for modding ;)

    • You're comparing a budget automatic to a budget quartz movement. Quartz will always win in accuracy but doesn't necessarily make it a better watch.

  • Oh. Nice looking watch

  • Is this store reputable/has anyone bought from them before? Are these watches genuine?

    • I haven't bought anything from them but have looked into their reputation by doing a Google search like this
Have a look at the watchuseek links.
Everything that I have read says they are legit & most people are happy with them. They have paypal, so be smart and use it.

I've used Skywatches before. Nothing to worry about. They have a good rep on the forums.
