  • Where's the bargain???

    • +2

Please provide details of an equivalent system configuration for a cheaper price …

      • +4

Yep pretty good price for something that is already screwed together and has 60 money back and 2-year warranty. Just the board/cpu/ram combo is around $520 alone: http://www.mwave.com.au/product/bundle-deal-intel-core-i5-64…. By the time you add the rest on the bits, case, power support, hdd, ssd, keyb, mouse you'll be well over $800.

        $850 Video Editing/Photoshop/Multi-tasking Config

        CPU: Intel Core i5 6400 $269
Mobo: Gigabyte B150M-D3H $134 (Make sure this is the DDR4 version)
        RAM: 8GB (2x4GB) DDR4-2133 $89
        SSD: OCZ Arc 100 240GB $116
        HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 2TB $99
        GPU: (Intel HD 530)
        Case: Silverstone PS09 $45
PSU: Antec Neo Eco 450C Bronze $75
        ODD: DVD-RW Drive $20
Cables: SATA data cable $2 (Motherboard only comes with two, extra needed for the 3rd drive in this build)

he's not wrong. considering the saving from the smaller ssd would be offset by the cost of win10.

edit: replied to the wrong person.

Thing is if its backed by a complete money back warranty for 2yrs, no-one really cares what parts are in it.

And PC parts are cos mmodity these days, there's like two companies who make HDDs and about half a dozen companies who make motherboards, do you think the avg. Aldi buy cares if it has an Asus or Gigabyte board?

        • +1

          @tonyjzx: agree.

  • +2

Its a reasonable spec'd system but lack of graphics card may be an issue for some.

I saw it aswell on the catalogue looked to be a good price but TBH I'm not uptodate with computer prices.

Just checked my local computer store and they have lower same specs selling for just under $900.

    • Yeah at this price they should be selling it with a graphics card.

      • +2

If you don't play games would it matter?

        • Meh, a graphics card doesn't always have to be used for gaming.

        • And if you play basic games it fine, runs candy crush well! :)

      • +2

Which graphics card are you expecting at this price point, the GT 610 or almighty R5-230?

        • -1

I've heard they can run Witcher 3 on ultra high.

  • If a warranty repair is needed does anyone know where it has to be sent to?

    • they have australian service centres

      • Where?

        • -2

          In China… I guess.

    • +2

Their service centre should be in Australia.

I had problem with Medion PC (Coil whine in PSU) two years ago. I called the service centre with all the information and they gave me courier booking details‏ & other information. After few weeks (cant remember the exact time), they sent back the PC with a new PSU and front panel (Due the crooked power button). They also un-dust the entire PC for me.

  • +3

This is the part I don't like it's in the small print under product piracy on the Medion warranty & service page
    http://www.medion.com/au/service/warranty/
A BIOS lock is a technical mechanism that allows you to perform an installation only under certain conditions. A special code, developed by us, prevents the installation of content of external media (e.g. recovery CD) except additional files (driver, tool, etc.), on a PC system other than that of the OEM's (hardware manufacturer).

    • +1

That page is extremely badly written.

I think what they are trying to say is that the OEM Windows media provided with the system will only install on PCs with a Medion BIOS.

I don't see anything wrong with this - I am pretty sure heaps of manufacturers are doing it….

"Are PC manufacturers or dealers committed to deliver Microsoft products with a full back up copy?
Article 50A paragraph 1 of the Copyright, Designs and Patents ACt 1988 reads as follows: "It is not an infringement of copyright for a lawful user of a copy of a computer program to make any back up copy of it which it is necessary for him to have for the purposes of his lawful use." It is stressed that two program copies can be delivered to the user from the outset, a working copy and either a backup copy or an alternative equivalent that gives the user the right to create a backup copy independently or with a 3rd party program.
Users of Microsoft products can exercise the right to create a backup copy (or making a backup copy by a third party), before the introduction of the so-called BIOS lock on a Recovery CD. After introduction of the BIOS lock it is still technically possible for the user to make an entire backup copy of the software installed on the hard disk. In conclusion, it is therefore incomprehensible for the purchaser to demand a price reduction in case of a lack of a full backup copy."

This isn't even an Australian act.

      • I wonder if it would prevent the use of imaging programs on cd such as Acronis, Paragon etc?

        • +1

Nah, it won't. As long as the original image is restored to the same machine with same hardware then there will be no problem.

  • This appears to be a Skylake i5 so am I right in guessing it should be able to output 4K video @ 60hz from a h.265 HEVC file?

    • +3

You still need a graphics card with HDMI 2.0 to really output 60hz video though. HDMI 1.4 doesn't have enough bandwidth to do 60hz 4k.

  • Would anyone by any chance know what kind of power supply is in this? I've got a spare gtx 970 laying around and wondering if the median has enough juice to power it

    • This is a good desktop as-is but not an ideal candidate for upgrading.

This would be a terrible rig to create a gaming desktop with. You'd definitely have to upgrade the power supply, and second the case is not really up to the task of handling a big-arse dual slot gaming GPU. The internals are cramped, the cables are probably not routed properly as there won't be any cable management features in the case, and then there's ventilation issues to consider — a gigantic card in a cramped case means poorer airflow.

You could try but I think there will be a lot of kinks along the way and the hassle of having to install another PSU is also time consuming.

The previous Medion systems also only had two DIMM slots, both of which were populated. For heavy users requiring 16GB of RAM, they'd have to take out the existing modules to replace it with.

      • cheers mate, looks like I will be building another machine

    • Not sure, but i know that gtx960 will be able to run on 450W PSU.

  • Is this a better deal if I were to add a good graphics card and 24GB memeory and use it as a gaming PC ?

    OR

Are there better package deals for a decent gaming experience - budget $under $2K (i5 or i7 with 32GB DDR4, SSD, Good GPU and PSU)??

    • Don't buy this if you want a gaming PC with those specs. Build custom.

    • Read the comments just above from @scrimshaw

  • I am thinking of buying a gtx960 and adding it to the build? would this be achievable? i assume this would void the warranty?

  • What kind of motherboard is it? Any pictures of it, I want to see exactly what slots are available for expansion. The manual is almost useless in this regard.

This is the closest image I could find http://i.computer-bild.de/imgs/7/3/2/4/8/5/9/Medion-Akoya-P5…

It's for a previous Skylake Medion PC reviewed here http://www.computerbild.de/fotos/Medion-Akoya-P5320-Aldi-PC-…

  • anyone figure out which motherboard is in this?

    Edit

The motherboard has H110H4-EM on it

Not one of the ones that can do overclocking, D'oh!

    Still, a good price!….tempted

    • Medion au site has a manual for it.

Model of au unit is Medion P5110-D. FYI has 450W power supply unlike other european version that only have a 350W power supply.

W10 licence is OEM. If you have a Windows 7/8/8.1 professional licence key you can easily upgrade purchased system by:
      (1) Update current system to W10 Home version 1511 first (VIP !!!!!)
      (2) Change Product Key to default W10 Pro key (ends in 3V66T) to start fast Pro upgrade
      (3) Change Product Key to your legit W7/8/8.1 Pro key and you are done and activated

  • Just pulled up a list for components from MSY
ignoring Windows 10 and the optical drive,
for $10 more you get a system that can overclock 40+% with ease…..

Summary, Blinkin' good price for an 'off the shelf' PC…….
but, for those who have a few bits already, you're better off upgrading…

    • +1

It's not $10 more though, you can't build this spec with OS, optical, power cables, fans and coolers, SATA cabling, keyboard and mouse for anything near $799.

Yes you can build better for more money, but so what.
