Recommended Cars for Tall Guys 6ft6 ^

Hey people, I am 6ft8 Male

Is there anyone on here who is above average height and has found a car they fit in comfortably?
(like you have sufficient leg, head room and has a good steering wheel distance)

Just curious

Got a price range in mind?

Good ole Commodore and Falcon always fit the bill

    • +1

Falcon is not suited for a tall driver.

      • Reason?

I'm 6'3 and never had issues in either. Obviously everyone has different torsos as well, different length arms etc can come into play.

Believe it or not I can even drive a Swift without a problem :)

        • +1

I can drive swift and falcon too.

Lets say "the Falcon is not best suited for tall driver" - the reason is poor ergonomics of the drivers seat in falcon.

Any review tells that and my personal experience with 2 FG falcons confirms that.

It doesn't mean that car is bad, I actually quite enjoyed falcon (6'2).

    • ive noticed commodores or some holdens are quite good. Falcons arent bad either
I am just curious for peoples thoughts and what cars they have.
in the next year or two ill be looking to buy a car that I really like which will probs up to 20k

  • +1

I went to get my golf serviced last month and a really tall guy - I am 5'10" and standing bedside him I did not even come up to his shoulder was there in his Golf Mark VII. So if he spent $60k on a Golf it must be comfortable?

    Just saying.

    • That's a hell of an expensive Golf, was it an R?

      • +3

Not a R. That was just the price including repairs.

        • +1

What did the repairs involve, buying another Golf?

      • Yes - and he was getting a stage 2 kit put into it so another couple of bob 🙄

        • +1

Stage 2 Fwd Golf? Good luck with that.

  • +1

I'm only 6ft but our Mondeo is pretty good. Heaps of legroom in the back with the seat right back too.

  • +5

Any car has long as it has a sunroof ;)

    • Yeah, a large sunroof in a 92 Barina made a big difference for 6'3. But 6'6 not likely.

    • i thought this too but one of our cars had a sunroof and it actually ate into the space.

  • +1

Go into car yards, they probably wont mind you trying stock out for comfort/fit. I did it a few times it was ok.

Try a lancruiser or maybe patrol. Maybe medium 4wds too. And maybe work vans. I'm well into 6'es, and still buy normal cars and then hunch a bit.
I have a Coaster bus, plenty of headroom of course. But not easy driving.
    There's not much I've noticed for 6'3".

  • +1

I am 6'2" and I often do some valet parking and I usually don't like to move a customer's seat position. One customer was very tall, around 6'7" and he was driving a Commodore Ute, possibly a HSV from memory. I had to really stretch to get the clutch in (as in sit forward on the seat too), so I feel something like that could be a great option. If you are aiming at around 20k, I feel you're looking at second hand, which is good, as it seems the older model Falcons and Holdens actually have better size.

  • +1

i'm 6'4, so not in your league !

it obviously depends on your torso/leg proportion

you'll really have to try what you like and see if you can fit

what's your budget? and needs for the car?

  • +1

Ford fiesta sport. You'll fit, easy.

  • +1

Jeep Grand Cherokee is a good choice, I sat in an overland edition and it was amazingly comfortable and spacious. I have the same problem with so many cars on the market. Stay well away from Mitsubishi, your head will hit the roof. Commodore might be ok too. Though personally as a tall person I like to ride higher, so SUV and 4WD are my preference.

    • +1

A 6"6' friend tried the AU Falcon and couldn't even get in properly.
Ended up with a Jeep and that worked well for him…you will need to try different cars to see what fits you (literally)

If you are into steel and not plastic, and a classic to boot, try an old Datsun 1200. I am 5'12, and my Repco delivery guy was 6'4". He drove that 1200 for 3 years with no apparant problems, and I still have it after 10 years, with no comfort problems. I got a Datsun 1000 Coupe as well, and enough leg room. Lotsa older classics have more room, well they did not have lotsa safety gear fitted did they. Or buy a convertible without a roof if you live in sunny climates, or get a bike. Just saying…..

    • +2

      I am 5'12

      So, 6'? Don't sell yourself short! :p

    • I'd take plastic car with engineered crumple zones and airbags over steel cages of death any day of the week.

      Don't listen to this guy.

      • Obviously you did not read or understand properly my first word, and or last two words. Shame.
Like speed, a steel vehicle never killed anyone, it's the driver, and the sudden stop that does all the hurt.

I have both the later built plastic fantastic, but also the 2 X classic not plastics. As long as I don't do anything stupid, as long as I see someone else about to do something stupid, and or luckily be out of the way of the possible unknown stupid actions/situations, I will never need my classic to have all the safety gear offered nowadays. So far many 1000's of klms without a drama in my steel death trap, but the pastic has been nailed, furtunately parked/stationary both times.

If you actually comprehend what is written, I only offered an option as an example, based on the external size of the vehicle and that perceptions do not always accurately dictate its internal size or usability for a 6'+ driver. 40 + years in the motor trade, I sorta do know a bit about this subject, as well as experience with steel and plastic. I never said he had to do what I do, and given the many many 1000's of classic cars still alive out there, your "don't lis……. guy" is rude and unwarranted.

  • Interesting the discussions about Falcons. Perhaps the model makes a difference. (Or perhaps it depends on how the heoght is distributed) I personally dislike the way Commodores drive so Ive never really spent any time in them and none of my other tall friends have them either …. Im 6"4 and ive had several falcons and they have been great. But I havent tried a recent model. I currently have a Camry and I would prefer a tad more room ….
Also I found the Old 70's Long wheel bases good ( 450 SEL for example )
My Partner - also over 6ft just bought a Mazda 3 - and that shocked me as to how much leg room there was….
Rides a little firmer than I like for long trips but around town its good and it beats the Camry for driver room. (NB Im talking about a 10 year old camry versus the current Mazda 3)

2 inches will make a difference and so will your unique measurements

  • +1

6f5 here and in the market for cars as well and looking for leg room as well with abit of room still left behind me.

I've only really looked at sedans/wagons as I dislike suvs.

From what I've found is the commodores have the most leg room easy.

Next I would say the Subaru outback/liberty, Ford Mondeo and mazda 6.

    Then the Toyota Camry.

I've test drove alot of cars in the past 6months but from memory these are the ones that have stood out to me for leg room.

I really miss my good ol ford fairlane :(

I'm 6'6", long limbs and torso, and getting in through the doors on Falcons has been a struggle for me in the past. Once I'm in the car, they're not too bad.

In general, modern cars have A pillars that get wider as they approach the car roof, and this creates massive blindspots for me - one behind each A pillar and a nice wide one behind the rear view mirror. Even worse, the designers insist on having tall moulding between dash and transmission tunnel/centre console, which means that I can't depress the clutch in some cars, and can't put the handbrake on in others [Toyota 86, for example].

At work I drive a late model Hilux ute, which has pretty good head room and vision [apart from the section blocked by the rear view mirror, of course] - the only issues I have with that vehicle are getting regularly smacked in the side of the knee with the gear stick whenever I'm in 5th on the highway and hit any piddly little bump in the road, and also that my knees brush the dash when the seat's in its rearmost position.

My brother [same height, different proportions] has an older model Land Cruiser Troopy, which is just about as good as it gets: skinny A pillars, rear view mirror in a reasonable position, good distance from seat to dash, best headroom this side of a bus.

I currently drive a Lexus LS400, this only works because it's an auto and has a sunroof. Am looking to sell…

Getting ready to post the same - at 196cm I find a number of cars provide sufficient seat travel for driving comfort
However the very large issue is safe driving and I find that many many cars have quite wide A pillars between the drivers door and windscreen
This limits visibility to the drivers side and also to the curb
Basically sitting so far 'back' in the car I don't feel safe enough to buy it
I owned a 2001 Magna for 10 years for this reason
Not only was the legroom > Falcon/Commodore but it was also more into the engine bay meaning you weren't positioned as far back
I test drove a number of cars and then was given an Aurion for a year
It wasn't terrible but not as good as the Magna
Again I test drove a number twelve months ago and for mine the best were a Mits Outlander (much better than Challenger and Pajero funilly enough) and the pricey VW SUV - Tourag (I think)
I bought the Outlander as it was half the price of VW (who as itturns out are also full of it)
The Nissan X-trail was also ok
So depending on what sort of car you are after I would start with those 3

Please post back your experiences as I would be interested in your thoughts :)

I am exactly the same height as you and drive a 6-year old Ford Territory. I have found it to be great to get into and out of, as well as for long trips (+4 hours). I have a mate around 200cms and he drives a Territory as well. Both of us have had lower back issues and swear by the Territory.

Just my experience and noting that SUV's aren't for everyone.

        • +1

As you say SUV not for everyone but for taller peeps noting having to get 'dwon' into the car is a bonus
I won't buy another sedan - I like the higher ride too

Good to know about Territory - I sat in but didn't drive one
I preferred the Outlander for vision but Territory was definitely on the better end
If they are still making them next time I buy I will test drive one

      • Ooh other comments reminded me too - rear leg room
Ihave 2 boys 13 & 10. They will both be my height and the 13 is already 6"+
When we tried cars I sat in the from, adjusted the seat, then sat in the back behind me
For REAR legroom as well my 2 cars above were best - Outlander & Tourag

        • Time for a Caprice in that situation :) long wheel base

  • +1

Suzuki swift is a pretty tall car, despite being small. Two tall guy at work drives one (separately)

  • +1

    There are alternatives

    • Is that Marcin Gortat of the NBA Washington Wiz?
Also he appears to be sitting on a box for emphasis though he is legit 7 footer

  • +2

Ford F Truck, dodge ram or Humvee.
You will feel like a midget inside with all that head and leg room.
I find the main thing about being tall is getting in and out of smaller/lower cars. 4x4s and large SUVs seem to fit the bill

  • +1

I'm 6'4" and drive a Mazda 2 comfortably, some of those small hatches are good because they might be small but the ceiling goes up real high. The steering wheel also can be pushed in towards the dash. I can also fit into a Ford Focus or Holden Barina easily. Cars like the Honda Jazz and Civic though I can't fit into. You just really need to go out and sit and see what works for you.

  • +1

    Toyota Corolla…

My mate's really tall, and he was fitting in it quite well!

  • +1

    A Hummer limo maybe…?

  • I felt it was worth updating this topic. At 6'2" very big and inflexible I have been driving a van for a long while and it was easy to get in and out. I sold it and don't have a car now. I can't get into Falcon taxis and only just into Hybrids however my mother-in-law lends me her Nissan Micra and it has more head room and enough leg room in the front to comfortably drive (in fact there is heaps of extra head room). I can't believe how much room it has although the width of the seat would become uncomfortable for big (wide) guys on longer trips.

  • I'm going to respond to this ancient thread as this was my issue today and maybe others will see it and respond with their more recent experiences

I am 196cm (6ft4), my height is pretty evenly proportioned, not all legs or upper body or anything.

I currently drive a 2005 Ford Focus which has excellent leg room, I can touch my knees together under the steering wheel. Back in the day I couldn't buy a Commodore or Falcon because they were not for tall people, but this Focus was excellent. Alas it is failing now and I have to replace it.

I want to buy a 4WD SUV so I tried 3 common ones today. I could get in all of them, but Pajero Sport was extremely tight, not made for the tall. D-Max (no MU-X was available SUV shortage) has OK legroom but could not touch knees together.Toyota Fortuner was the same as D-Max.

I don't think I am going to be able to buy a reasonable 4WD because I don't fit. May have to settle for an AWD SUV. I drove a Hyundai Santa Fe for a fair distance recently and it wasn't too bad.

    • Thanks for the reply and keeping this going as a reference
The key differential for many is the 2nd row
I had more choices as the driver if I didn't have a passenger behind me
But with kids now taller than me I needed 2nd row room as well

We settled on a Kluger to get 2nd row room
If 2nd row isn't important and you want SUV I would definitely check out an Outlander
The Pajero sport is a wagon version of the Triton - but the Outlander is different and much roomier
Most Mazdas will be too cramped and very poor vision
I don't have a dealer anywhere nearby but I would try a Skoda Kodiaq too if you do
let us know what you pick!

  • I am 6ft 5 about to get a swift sport. Heaps of room..

    • How do you find the A pillar on the front right
Plenty of cars I fit in I find that pillar to create a massive blind spot whilst driving
Apparently for crash safety and because of aerodynamics these pillars are sloped more but thicker in later models
That said I sat in (didn't drive) a Hyundai I30 and it seemed quite roomy and good
All these are a bit low down for me now with bad knees - YMMV
      Good luck with your Swift

      • +1

Drove it Saturday. Can't say I really had any sight issues probably as I was trying to get back into the rhythm of driving a manual again. I can confirm headroom was not an issue.

  • +1

Check out the Honda Jazz, and I am not kidding.

  • +1

    Yaris.

    They’re actually efficiently proportioned inside.

  • +1

My uncle had a Goggomobil years ago , I'm 6'9' and couldn't touch the front.

  • +1

2016 VW Passat was the most comfortable car Iv ever driven. Fully adjustable seat, very quiet cabin and soft suspension

    187cm tall

  • A bus? :)

Seriously, a van of some sort would have a higher headroom. I am 188cm and found most new family cars are sacrificing look vs. practicality.

  • This car reviewer is 6"7 and specifically mentions the current model Camry has plenty of room for him:

    https://www.carexpert.com.au/car-reviews/2021-toyota-camry-a…

Just don't buy the top SL model as the sunroof cuts into headroom.
