- Is this a good car to have as a first vehicle?
- Is this a good price?
- What about maintenance costs of Holden?

DO NOT BUY A CRUZE
EVER
NEVER EVER
THE WORST CAR ON AUSTRALIAN ROADS
Do some research and you shall learn much. It's basically a Daewoo.

Don't….just don't
dont buy
Cool. That narrow my search to other than Holden.
What everyone else said stay well away from a Cruise
dont bother with it
shitbox at its finest
fire hazard
horrible manual and auto boxes
sluggish pos
AVOID
IMO with your budget I would stick with something Japanese.
Toyota Corolla
Mazda 3
Honda Civic
Subaru Impreza
If you find something with low (ish) Ks, full service history and have it checked by a mechanic you're probably going to get something decent.
I'd go with something like the Mazda 3 for sure at that pricepoint. Popular car, easy to get parts and plenty on the road and for sale on places like Carsales.com.au so you should be able to find a well maintained, well priced example.

Mazda 3 for sure or Mazda 2.
Thanks everyone for advice. I'm looking at Camry/Corolla/Civic. Will consider Mazda 3 too.
don't want to be rude, but that's the wrong way round
Mazda are WAY ahead of pretty much every other mass producer of cars
Toyota are selling to fleets
PLEASE drive a Mazda 3 first, then any toyota you want, then drive the 3 again……or to be honest, the other way around would be fine too. but drive a number of cars on the same day. then you can compare properly. and not on a 5 minute 'round the block' with the dealer. a proper 30-60mins, doing the kind of driving that you'll be actually driving. no point pottering around at 50kph if you spend 90% of your time sitting at 100 on a fwy, or vice versa.
Sure mate. Thanks for the advice. Will do as said!!
I'm sure you have the idea now, but avoid anything Holden.
A recent Hyundai or KIA of the same size and type of the Mazda 3 is also a good idea. However, Mazda 3 is more or less your best choice.
Run. Don't walk.
Not sure if i'm missing something, but I dont see many Mazda 3's up for sale. Would appreciate if any one point me to correct site.
Carsales.com.au would be a good start. Put in your location and budget etc and see what turns up.
A quick look now shows some nice low KM examples.
"Is this a good car to have as a first vehicle?"
No.
Avoid anything that holden rebadge.
Have a read here and also do some searching if you want to know more…

$12k will get you a reasonable Toyota.
