Although it has been cheaper, I am a simple man. I see nutella, I upvote.

Good stuff, you'd be nuts if you don't buy this…

      • +11

Ironically, there's very little nuts in Nutella. It's mostly vegetable oil. A more appropriate name would be Oilella, but I guess that wouldn't be very marketable.

        • -2

Nutella is more than 40% nut.

        • +1

so 40% nut oil and 60% canola oil then. with some palm sugar and cocoa for flavour

        • +3

          @CanadaAye:

Nutella is more than 40% nut.

          It's 13%. With Protein 7.3%, Carb, 54.7% and Fat 30.3%, [30.3x9/(7.3x4+54.7x4+30.3x9)=] 52.4% calories from Fat.
With Palm Oil as its fat additive, Oilella has no redeeming health claim.

        • +1

Oilella LOL. I'm going to remember that every time I'm tempted by it's sweet deliciousness.

        • +3

palm oil……. so by eating Nutella I'm supporting Orangutans loosing their habitats

        • +2

Leave a Jar of Nutella on top of stove or hot plates in a warm place all day and it separates into 70% clear oil stuff on top and 30% chocolate stuff on the bottom.
And even knowing this, i still eat it :(

        • +2

With 54.7% sugar, more like Sugarella

        • @AlexF:

I was referring to the word, clearly I should have included a safety wink!

I am a simple man. I see nutella, I upvote.

This year, I aim to uncover a deal which combines Nutella, Star Wars and Eneloops…

      • +1

Chocolate eneloops exist so all we need now is some star wars theming to go with it.

        • we need some MicroSD cards and SSDs too

        • +1

@froodh: Nutella surprise? A big jar of nutella with a surprise inside…. microSD, SSD, Eneloop etc.

      • +1

I'm sure any number of brothels would be happy to indulge in that fantasy, but it might cost extra ;)

        • You want to put the jar where?

  • What's it normally cost?

    Edit - Save $1.50

    • around the $10 mark for 1kg

      • We're talking about a household staple here; any saving is a big deal!

Crap, just bought some 400 gram nutella 25% off from coles for $4.50

    • Well if you wanted a kilogram you would have bought that right? Smaller quantities usually cost more anyway.

      • This wasn't on sale when I bought it

        • Even so, you still paid more.
At the regular 1kg price of $10.49 (Source: Woolworths online, since Coles don't have 1KG on their site), you're getting Nutella at $1.05 per 100g.
Buying 400g jars on sale at $4.50 means you're still paying $1.125 per 100g.
          Edit: fixed my maths

        • @itsMartin:

The ozbargain in me was lazy that day, didn't want to drive 5 minutes to my nearest woolworthe

Australian Nutella isnt that nice, however as a Nutella freak - I still love it

When I was in Italy 2 yrs ago, you'd still buy them in glass jars and they taste somewhat better.

    • -1

Pretty sure the Nutella in Australia is made in Italy. Perhaps the exported Nutella is slightly different to the Nutella sold in Italy? Not sure.

      • For Australia and New Zealand, Nutella has been manufactured in Lithgow, New South Wales since the late 1970s.

        • Yep - don't forget, being made in Australia doesn't mean anything.

Australia doesn't have a favorable winter climate as does Italy and central Europe, whilst most of the Nutella Hazelnuts are sourced from Turkey/Italy, you can safely assume at a bare minimum, the hazelnuts reach the Italian manufacturer way quicker than our stale pallets

        • might be why it has palm oil if made in Australia and our proximity to Indonesia and Malaysia, Europe probably uses sunflower oil.

      • +1

        @Daniel:

Your about 1,00000 miles away in your answer Daniel, no where near.

It's made in Lithgow from imported ingredients (Hazelnut, Palm oil, Sugars, etc)

    • not sure why you got negged. you are correct: the australian nutella is indeed different from the italian one.

see following links and in the comments section:
      http://www.wowhead.com/forums&topic=8622/nutella
      http://sweets.seriouseats.com/2012/03/international-face-off…

(i still love the australian nutella, but it IS different)

      • I'm only guessing, but maybe they're all made differently in Italy depending on the country. Some ingredients could be illegal or have regulations in some countries.

I know for a fact that US Dr Pepper stopped being sold here due to an unapproved ingredient and now only UK Dr Pepper is sold in the bigger stores (Coles & Reject Shop).

      • Caprimulgus, I don't know why i'm negged too, I can safely say there is a large portion of under 12s on these forums.

        • +1

Right that is so the demographic of this website. The under twelves who mummies and daddies buy everything for them. Spot on sir.

    • Taste is different. I prefer Nutino though because it's more hazelnut and less chocolate.

  • so good!

  • +2

I'm here just to see how many clowns bang on about the amount of sugar, oil etc in this stuff.
I don't like the stuff personally, but who gives a crap, this is Ozbargain, not Ozdiet. Enjoy your bargain and Nutella folks. :-)

    • +2

I think it's valid. At least two people already thought they were purchasing a nut spread. Maybe they'd make a different purchasing decision if they knew the real ingredients? In the past, there's been ice cream deals where people have mentioned that the volume is deceptive because they just pump more air into the ice cream with some brands and I've stopped buying those brands.

  • 15 days into New Year, already saying goodbye to eating healthy.

    • +1

      Same..

I used to eat Nutella on toast DAILY.

In the last 3 weeks I put a stop to it to reduce my sugar intake..i've started creeping to 3-4 toasties a week =((

      • Small changes are easier to keep!!

Any effort is worth it. Watched "That Sugar Film" the other day, while overblown a bit it gives you pause for thought.

        Keep it up!

  • To everyone got one of the free Accu-Chek Blood Glucose Meters (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/229814) - try eating half a jar and seeing who can get the highest "score". :-)

Cheaper than using fake tan ;-)

it's the saturated fat in the palm oil that turns me off……. but the palm oil is used to cook corn chips and its in most biscuits instead of butter.
