        Conclusion from above:

        Conclusion
In a perfect world, everyone would have the highest-performing SSD available to drop into their notebook and enthusiast-class desktop. Sadly, most of us are on more limited budgets. SSDs remain premium performance components. Even though price per gigabyte is way down compared to a few years ago, cost still isn't comparable to mechanical storage. Entry-level SSDs like Mushkin's 512GB Reactor deliver around 10 times the performance of a hard drive. But sometimes the extra expense just isn't in the cards.

Mushkin's Reactor really does a good job of pushing solid-state storage down to more affordable price points. Given modest performance and low cost, this drive is one of the best values we've seen. Just remember that it's not going to be as fast as some of the more enthusiast-oriented SSDs we review.

SSDs are also more reliable than disk drives. This is a selling point that resonates with many users. The reliability increase more than doubles in a notebook environment. Desktop users still benefit from lower latency and higher throughput. The Reactor doesn't ship with a desktop adapter bracket, so owners of older PCs need to consider mounting options. Some low-cost SSDs priced just above the Reactor do come bundled with adapters. Those products usually employ older controller technology that doesn't deliver the same random and incompressible speed, though.

Mushkin's Reactor sits right on top of the happy median line. Anything that costs less at this capacity point is going to be a mechanical hard drive, and everything above forces you to spend more without a corresponding increase in space.

        • Actually I don't think I can recommend it anymore.

I had a look at the specs and it is a MLC drive.

The Reactor and Deluxe range are alright, but this ECO2 range looks like it's got some flaws, especially when you see that the 120 GB version has lots of failures and 1 Egg reviews. However, there aren't enough reviews on the 512GB one to come to a conclusion.

Made in the USA apparently isn't that great anymore.

        • @ponyhearts:
Can you explain what is wrong with MLC? I am not across SSD technology so not sure why is MLC bad but have seen others mention someting similar in the past.

        • ECO2 is not the same model as REACTOR so how is that review relevant?

          @lancedefrance:

Nothing, really. In practical terms most drives are MLC.

Google SLC (that's where we started) and MLC (where we've been most of the time) and TLC. The more layers, the "less safe". But in practice, it doesnt mean squat. The memory is rarely the weak point, for the rare occasion that a bit of memory dies there is a spare pool of memory that gets substituted in it's place. The controller usually dies first, rendering all your data dead rather than just a few cells of memory.

        • @justtoreply:
thanks for the explanation, so do you think this is a good drive to purchase or should I stick with something like the Samsung EVO and pay the additional cost?

        • @lancedefrance:

No idea. I am not in the market for SSDs at the moment therefore have no need to stay abreast of things.

        • @lancedefrance:
i got myself a samsung 850 in the last shopping express deal(i think) and they have always been good drives

        • @brocky2006:
Thanks mate, yes might skip this and get a samsung instead.

  • Seems the consensus is to wait for 850Evo hope one goes on sale soon =)

Price also seems to be AUD$188.00

    • I got my 850 evo from one of those $100 voucher deals. Ended up paying about $150 for 500G around 4-5 months ago. Works great and much faster compared other brands which I've had (sandisk, patriot). Cheers.

      • Very good price! Thanks I will pray they have something similar as I am thinking now seems to be the time to upgrade to SSDs as prices have gotten very reasonable.

        • Once you start using ssd, there is no going back :)
