Seeking Budget Furniture Options for Outfitting a Newly Purchased House

hey guys,

Just brought a house & will have limited budget to get furniture for it. For now, just looking at what are some of the cheapest furniture places around.. Not looking at Fantastic Furniture quality. Something at least marginally better quality would be on the hit list. Already started looking at gumtree for 2nd hand stuff as well. Just seeking others ideas on where else to search.

Currently seeking

  • Bed Frame (King Size) - P
  • Lounge suite.. Probably something like a 3 seater & a 2 seater.
  • Dining table. Something with around 6 seats
  • TV stand. To fit a 55 inch. - these seem damn expensive for what they are
  • large rug for loungeroom

Thats about it I think..

Thanks guys..

There is no better alternative than gumtree. Try and find somebody moving overseas selling a house full of stuff. You should get a great deal if you buy the lot, and it will look a bit better matched than odds and ends from all over.

    • Also consider spending a bit more on key pieces. I bought a matching lounge and dining setting almost 15 years ago and they've served me exceptionally well. They're almost at end of life but they've paid their dues well and truly and were worth every cent.

Be careful buying things that are "too trendy" that will date quickly - waste of money. Buy quality that has more timeless styles, then dress it up with small details like cushions that are more modern and cheap enough to throw away when styles change.

I picked up a nice TV stand at Ikea - plain black with glass that fits 6 game consoles underneath for about $150. It looked a lot like a $800 I had seen a week earlier so I was very happy. I wouldn't buy a couch from Ikea though - a friend loves them and buys a new one every 2-3 years which to me is a bit crazy.

  • If you live in an area of lots of apartments, you'll see turnover of tenants who want to onsell. Some other areas, are more stable. Agree, Gumtree best.

  • IKEA

  • ikea, especially for a nice rug

  • you BROUGHT the house where?
or did you buy it? hence BOUGHT it?

  • Another recommendation for Gumtree. With some time and patience you can find quality gear in very good condition for a lot less than new landfill junk from fantastic furniture or the like.

If you are in Melbourne checkout Casey Auctions in Hallam, SE suburbs. They have a Facebook page. Happy to discuss more if this is relevant to you.

  • Invest in a cheap trailer to move free or cheap furniture from Gumtree. Gives you the edge on actually being able to pickup.
Initially get free stuff from gumtree so that it 'does the job' then keep looking for what you really want.
