  • $100 for a torch??

    Good grief.

    • But its bright lol well its cheap compared to buying a torch from the shops here say you buy a LED lenser its about 300 lumen and you pay around $70 AUD

    • The Jetbeam C8 is a 1000 lumen powerful good quality torch available for nearly half this price.

      https://www.fasttech.com/products/0/10004046/3510400-authent…

I believe the price at Fastech is the cheapest at ~A$53. Bangood is selling it for ~A$66.
Another advantage of the Jetbeam is that a 18650 battery is included in the price.

NB: I actually have a Nitecore Mh-20 bought on special but i had noticed the cheap price of the Jetbeam c8.

      • Lumen isnt everything. Candela determines how effective the light produced is and they go hand in hand.

I was recommended this https://www.fasttech.com/products/0/10002364/2648700-convoy-… along with 2 samsung 18650 battery and a nightcore charger and im very happy with its effectiveness. I could shine light down a dark street and see clearly.

        • yea i have a few convoy c8 they are great lights but this light is easily twice as bright… if you want convoy branded lights the owners name is simon he sells on aliexpress hes a nice person and always helps out if you want your lights modded.
          http://www.aliexpress.com/store/330416

        • @aussieprepper: Lights modded? What kind of mods can you do to the flashlight?

        • @venomx2: what do you want done? More power. More modes.more distance. Wider or narrower beam.water proofing. Mount options. Heaps more

        • @aussieprepper: Do you also get your 18650 batteries from that seller?

        • @venomx2: what seller sorry? usually fasttech or gearbest depending on price and what i need. what do you need from your cells?

        • @aussieprepper: Just for use in flashlights.

        • @venomx2: any cells should do just try and find ones that have a higher amp reading and depending on your torches flat top or button top…most MAH are standard around 3000mah i have these they are protected button top cells and still give good amperage i think 7 amp max and good mah. but they are on the bigger side might not fit all applications
          https://www.fasttech.com/products/0/10002357/1207704-authent…

      • they also had the olight s30 on special at gearbest last month for 30 USD that is also 1000 lumen single 18650 torch

    • $100 is nothing. https://www.fasttech.com/products/1699/10001842/2013000-nite… is the priciest on fast tech and ive seen one before that was $600. Understand theres people that rely on high quality torches as essential tools and theres also hobbyists/torch enthusiasts.

    • You may not believe it but I have bought at least 5 torch over $100 each, latest is this.

mate, some people pay over $200,000 for a car and others pay $20,000
some people pay $500 for fine dining and some people pay $50

      what's with the attitude?
no one's asking for your opinion.
if you want to make one? make an educated one.

  • What's the colour temperature?

  • i think the XHP50 is a cool white so like around 6000k but the specs at Cree show different and Nitecore doesn't state it

    • Just found that FastTech also sells EC4SW with MT-G2 (neutral white) for about the same price, so I'll get that one instead. Thanks for posting the deal!

      • yea apparently they are really nice tints only heard good things about the MTG2 but i think you loose a few lumen because of the 5000k tint but neutral white is always a good choice :D

Before reading this past i was in the dark about the premium/bright torch industry. Good for you to shed a light on it

    • Yes, very enlightening :D

  • Can someone recommend a good waterproof torch using 18650's.

I got an 2x 18650 powered HWAWYS Ultrafire XML-T6 a while ago and was amazed how good it is as a torch. For a small torch it puts off great light!
It puts halogen lamps running on 12 volt batteries to shame.

Unfortunately it isnt waterproof, I wish it was. I am looking for something with at least that power but that can get splashed and dunked with water without concern. Think diving torch but doesnt need to be capable of going more than say 5 metres underwater.

I guess that means IP68 or maybe IP67 (1 metre) would do.

    Thoughts on stuff like:

    • What is your budget before I post? Lol

      • I guess I'd prefer $40 AUD max but can stretch to $80 for an awesome torch.

Actually i guess for something truly awesome I'd pay $120

    • This torch is ipx8 so 2 meter water resistant and 1.5 meter drop proof

  • +1

I have this torch, and it's awesome. however just a note of warning, you need "button-top" 18650s, not a flat-top.
This is a pretty good deal, I did get mine a little cheaper a couple of months ago through a group buy organised on http://budgetlightforum.com/node/42014
If you are addicted to torches, I highly recommend that site.
Also, EC4S is a significantly better torch to the EC4: http://flashlionreviews.blogspot.gr/2015/09/nitecore-ec4s-pr…

    • Whats your name on BLF? I guess you know who I am lol every one is welcome on BLF

      • I am now on BLF too under the same username as here.

AussiePrepper are you MadMax on BLF?

  • It looks like I am going to need more 18650 batteries as my torch library expands.

Where's the best place to get 4 or 8 decent quality ones?

    • wow i just wrote so much and didn't save it :( far out it was heaps also…

for batteries i would suggest fasttech or gearbest or banggood but fasttech usually have the best prices and range it depends what you want from your batteries? it all depends how crazy you want to with amps? make sure you buy Sony Panasonic or Sanyo LG or Samsung

torches i will add a few now but i will add more later also
      http://www.banggood.com/Shadow-JM35-CREE-MT-G2XHP-50-1900LM-…
(i can get a coupon for this torch takes it down to about $45 its a really good buy)they say IPX8 lol

      http://www.gearbest.com/led-flashlights/pp_139171.html
custom made light by some boys from BLF it is more of a pocket thrower it is IPX7 rated

      https://www.fasttech.com/products/0/10004046/1966100-jetbeam…
i have been eyeing this out for about a year now looks so good and good reviews about it! IPX8 i can stand by jetbeams IPX rating i have had a few jetbeams under water!

      http://www.aliexpress.com/item/X6-u2-portable-flashlight-iii…
also only heard good about these lights one of the lads on BLF modified one lightly and he got 500m beam distance! IPX8 rated!

do you want a light that throws far or a light that is more flood? seeing as you go fishing? i usually take a headlamp and a long distance torch when i am fishing…

      • Thanks Aussieprepper.

I am still a torch noob.

        The charger I have is a Nitecore I4 (I believe its only a V1.0, not a V2.0) and it came with 4 Nitecore branded batteries (NL186 9.6Wh).
They haven't been given a great deal of use to date, but have worked fine when they have. I'll look on Fasttech for Sony Panasonic or Sanyo LG or Samsung.

I used the XML-T6 while wading in belly deep water prawning.

It gave off more light than an old-school 12 volt powered halogen underwater prawning light (think 1.2 metre long handle running down to halogen light that must be run while submersed only). The light from the halogen was noticeably yellow versus the very white light of the XML-T6.
The XML-T6 also lasted 5 hours without showing any sign of running out of power.

I also had a 12 volt powered cheap LED prawning light, one of these:
        http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Force-Ten-Prawn-Fishing-Light-12-…

The XML-T6 appeared to be putting out a similar if not better amount of light to this thing, which kinda shocked me (in the positive for the XML-T6 and the negative for the Force Ten).

I purchased one of these 37 Lumen LED specialised prawning lights on EBAY:
        http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemVersion&item…

When it turned up it had the cigarette lighter style connection to 12 volt, not the alligator clips. It came with non-waterproof convertor to alligator clips. It was therefore useless for my purposes and I returned it without using it. The seller has since updated their photos and description. I note it had 900 lumen output rating which is around about the same as the rated output on my XML-T6 I suspect.

There is an obvious advantage if I can have a handheld 18650 powered Ip68 rated torch that puts out say 2000+ lumens - no need to lug around a 12 volt battery on a tyre inner tube, no worrying about the electrical cable connecting the 12 volt battery to the light. A lot safer and easier to move around with an 18650, as long as I can trust it as I dont want things to go dark all of a sudden!

The other attractive option would be a specialised prawn light like the Force Ten style, but one putting out say 4000 lumens!
Think this but better lumens: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/milwaukee-light-/172052114289

There is a big market for prawn lights - there are AA and AAA jobs around but I am concerned about their light output and their battery life - I'm surprised I havent come across any 18650 ones.

For example, this actually uses C size batteries and only does 400 lumens.
        http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/18-LED-Prawn-Light-Flounder-Batte…

Another example: AA batteries, only 130 lumens!
        http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Prawning-Flounder-Fishing-Light-L…

        • It depends on the brands. Some times they lie about the lumen range they overstate what the torch can do. A cree xml can do a max of about 800 lumen max and then you will be pulling high amps which means a lot of heat so most times you will be lucky to get 500-600. The xml2 do about 1000 lumen @ the higer amp range… So that is why some torches use multiple emitters. But these Led used in this nitecore start a minimum 1900 lumen but they are typically 3 amp minimum And all these lumen ratings are led reading not Ansi so that is why its usually better to pay for a brand name light because it will be ansi tested

  • I don't know anything about flashlights, is this a reputable brand? And is this a particularly good deal?

    • It's a reputable brand (for torches), it's an excellent torch, and it's a good deal. However, this torch takes batteries that you wouldn't have around the house (18650), you'd need two, but probably want four of them, depending on your usage. Of course, these batteries will also require a charger that you also probably don't have around the house. So Aside from the $100ish you're spending on the torch, you'd also need $8-25 worth of 18650 batteries, and a smart charger to go with it ($30-60).
If you're a torch enthusiast, or need an excellent torch for work/camping/fishing etc, then it's probably worth the money.

      • +1

Spacenoodle I agree with everything "youknow" says.

I am a torch noob, but having tried a decent torch that uses 18650 batteries and a powerful LED light, I want more.

The amount of light put out by these modern LED torches, and their battery life, make old school torches and lamps look like total obsolete rubbish.

This particular torch is IPX8 rated meaning it can be used underwater and although not having been officially tested for dustproofing (hence the X) it's very likely to have good dust and impact resistance (as its hard not to have pretty good impact resistance and dust resistance when you have built a waterproof torch body).

My advice would be try one. Yes your upfront cost for batteries and charger will be a lot, but once you've tried an 18650 powered LED torch you will never want a crappy AA or AAA or C powered torch again.

  • By the way these are awesome for squid jigging

More great discounts avail from this blog… http://m4dm4x.com/ :)

    • Wow niel has a blog I didn't know that thanks!

  • hey guys i spoke tom gearbest and they are going to give us a deal on 18650's i will get back to yous soon and post the deal thanks!

    • Gearbest are banned from OzB.

I think most people would be happy to pay what would probably be less than a dollar more to buy from a more reputable company.

      • are they? lol its the same buying from fasttech or gearbest or banggood. we have had a few group buys through gearbest lately and had no issues.

        • are they?

Yep. Check feedback in the link above and see how many people are loling. Here are a few to give you an idea.

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/211479

its the same buying from fasttech or gearbest or banggood

I disagree as does much of the recent feedback I've read. Not trying to convince you, just putting the info up here for anyone not sure about buying from them

        • @OzBragain: nah all good I understand. I ran that poll that asked what we thought about shipping from these companies. I have had my run in with these gearbest they took 2 extra weeks to ship my lg 18650s and they had no stock of a headlamp I ordered but they ended up giving me an exchange after some time. Same also with fasttech shipping me products doa and not giving me a refund.or selling me a battery bank with 1500mah capacity instead of the stated 5000 and telling me its not their problem.! think gearbest needs to work on their customer service No doubt. Starting to wonder if the products we buy are shipped straight from the manufacturer…
