(WA) Paid Car Rego on Expiry Day

Hey guys, I paid my rego on the day it expires which was yesterday 06/01/16, I paid through BPAY.

I checked my rego number here
http://www.transport.wa.gov.au/licensing/vehicle-licence-cheā€¦
and its showing Unregistered, expired or suspended.

anyone done this before? paid rego on the day?

  • You get another 2 weeks or so after it expires for the 3rd party insurance and another 2 months after to pay the rego so you will be alright.

    • Yeap, and I think it might even be 3 months after rego expiry that you can still backpay without going though pits inspection hassel.

  • BPay can take a few days to show as a payment , l always pay a few days before if using BPay. If you drive the car carry
Your receipt but with the WA cops that may not help !

    • yea, i thought its the delay, luckily i dont work till tuesday next week.

  • If it expires 6 January and you paid on 6 January, then you are totally safe. This infers that the registration is valid on 6 January and would no longer be valid on 7 January.

If you have paid the registration on the expiry date (which is the final day of validity), you can drive.

In the case that you are intercepted by ConHamstables, I'd simply accept the fine and later provide my own evidence of payment, which would clearly show that you paid before 7 January - that is, before the registration lapsed.

    • If it expires 6 January and you paid on 6 January, then you are totally safe.

They need to receive it by the expiry date, which they wouldn't have. Does WA have an amount to be paid'before this date' and a separate one for after that date? If so, you may have to fork out that extra amount OP. Are you aware you can pay it directly on their website rather than using BPay?

      • Our rego renewals in WA show two amounts - one for private use, one for business, but only one date for payment - I've got my renewal notice here and it states "Payment due before 31 January 2016" which is the expiry date. On the back of the notice, for BPay it says "payments for invalid amounts or payments past the due by date will be rejected and returned" I guess it depends whether the DoT classes the actual "due by" date as the same as the expiry date, or the day before.

ETA: Just got my previous renewal notice out and see the expiry date for my current rego is in fact 30 January 2016, so if the OP paid their rego on the actual expiry date (as opposed to paying on the "payment due before" date on the rego notice), then it looks they should be OK.

  • i once forgot to pay for 3 months late, kept driving. One day check pile of my mail piles and paid it. Nothing bad happens till you get caught

    • "Nothing bad happens till you get caught"

yes…..but if you are caught driving unreg = get expensive ticket, or worse, have a crash = ticket (usually), no insurance, pay for any damage you cause

always better to pay before it's due, and they receive it before it expires

      • Technically your insurance will be invalid if you don't have rego, but if due to an oversight you forgot to pay the rego renewal but your car was still road worthy, your insurance company will still pay up as the expiration of rego did not increase their risk.

If your insurance company don't pay, mention FOS and they will fold like a deck of cards.

Having said that, pay your rego because the fines are massive.

    • Nothing bad happens till you get caught

said every murderer and rapist ever

  • All good now, my car rego is now showing as registered and have 3 months rego.
