Absolute classic game and one of the best RTS games ever. Only for 4.99 USD as part of the steam mid week sales (Normally $19.99 which is still worth the price imo). I haven't seen it posted yet so i thought i would do my duty.
Alternatively the 4 pack is only $15 USD
The steam version has updated textures and general improvements and is fully integrated with steamworks (including steam workshops for custom maps, etc)
If not the best, apart from aoe itself.
i think Starcraft is the best RTS imo among the greatest.

Absolutely the best game ever. My Xbox broke few days ago and I was back on the PC playing rise of nations. Ha-ha. Mine has always been a pirated version though so won't actually mind paying the $5 now.

The game is fantastic, and I find it is actually the most "realistic" RTS around (bar the usual complaints of hoplites vs tanks!). Things like economic growth and PPF, national borders, attrition, city capture rather than destruction etc are all very well simulated.
Also, Chinese are OP as hell. Instant civilian creation beats anything!!
Can't wait to relive my teens with this one. So many late nights lanning with friends playing RoN.
Does anyone know what is the max resolution of this game? AFAIR you can only get up to 1280x1024?
When i played it on my mac you could modify a file to boost it up to 1080, but that was the original version.
Game hasn't aged that well, graphics are hit and miss…(buildings look good, units not so much), sound fx are lacking.. (like no airoplane engine sounds or that annoying high pitched hit sounds from weapons/arrows shing shing), mechanics are quite simplistic than I remembered too. Very simple upgrade system and tech tree. But overall good nostalgia for the cheap price. No way its worth the full price so get it when you can. :P
Just to confirm that this version, it will go up to 3440 x 1440, but unplayable at normal distance
I can comfortably play it on 2560 x 1080 with my 34" 21:9
