Talisker Storm $71 at 1st Choice (Usually ~ $87) + Other Whisky Deals

710

Ok, so that guy you need to get a present for likes whisky. If you like him a lot you will likely look at a decanter and/or glasses, but he's probably already has some. If you don't want to fork out a lot or know that he has glasses already, a bottle is your next go to. You want to aim for a "single malt" and spend above $60 if possible. It's all the rage these days to avoid Scotland and go for more exotic places like Taiwan (Kavalan) or NZ Tas (Hellyer), but you pay for it.

Here are some deals for people that want to get a decent bottle and know they are saving money. If he has a favourite, just get that or figure out what part of Scotland (or the world) his favourite is from and get another bottle from the distillery next door. I'm not going to go into how to pick a good whisky or describe the whiskies below, there are plenty of sites like that (Nicks, Master of Malt). I am just going to give some current good prices.

Talisker Storm $71: Great price at $71, rarely see it under $80. /u/notout50 has mentioned this a very peaty/smokey one so be warned.
Glenfiddich 12 Year $52: A staple for all whisky cabinets. Comes with fancy gift tin for $52 or with some glasses for $64. If you want another option around this price, check out the Glenlivet 12 Year or…
Glenmorangie 10 Year $57: Upgraded this to its own link due to its popularity in the comments.
Glenfiddich 18 year $118: See 12 year but for a better friend. At $118 this is a good price, never seen it under $130.
Glenmorangie 18 year $112: Same price as above, not as token as the 'fiddich; it also says "extremely rare" on the bottle which is cool.
Oban 14 year $88: Rarely see this under $100, another good choice for a mildly smokey drop.
Ardbeg 10 year $65: A smokey one so make sure they like the peat. Usually around the $85 mark.
Cragganmore 12 Year $66: Suggested by /u/renster72 and confirmed by me to be an excellent whisky at a great price.
Amberlour 12 Year $55: Also suggested by /u/renster72 and usually is about $66.

Note that you can probably get the same price at either 1st Choice or Dan's due to price matching, I picked them randomly. $30 off with Amex, free Click and Collect (VIC only) and $10 off at 1st Choice. Don't forget CashRewards (6%) and $20 gift card if you use Dan Murphy's!

So yeah, you can obviously get cheaper or more expensive whiskies but since this is a bargain site, I just picked the ones with the biggest drops in price. Buying for a lady? They don't call them the lowland ladies for nothing.

I will update closer to Christmas if I see any more.
Happy to answer any questions in the comments.

perfect for watering down a whisky

Tallisker is also an acquired taste like Ardbeg. I'm not saying they're the same, and maybe Ardbeg is stronger, but I like my Scotches and Talisker was just a bit too 'peaty' for me.

  • Hellyers Road Distillery is Tasmania has a few nice Single Malts

I purchased a bottle of Hellyers Road recently and was pleasantly surprised. Sure it's expensive, but it's almost floral and citrus in its flavours. A welcome change from the 'peat and moar peat' style of some Scotch.

      • Another +1 for Hellyers Road.
Visited their distillery near Burnie, Tassie. If you do their tour you get to bottle your own Whisky!
        http://hellyersroaddistillery.com.au/location/whisky-walk/

        • Plus it's cask strength (you even get to fill it from the cask itself) and you get to dip the top of the bottle in wax! Highly recommend that tour!

  • Do i like whisky?

Pick of the bunch for me is Glenmorangie Extremely Rare. Has won some whisky awards in the last couple of years and should probably be considered a limited edition. Plus the Glenmorangie 10yo is my favourite 'sessionable' single malt.

  • excuse my ignorance but how much better are these then say chivas regal? or dimple?

  • Im surprised Ardbeg Uigeadail is still available at first choice online. I would post it but there is only 5 left in stock. That's the best whisky available bar none (IMO) with the Amex offer its about $100 delivered which is an absolute bargain

Good post. I find the storm a bit rough although i do like the 10yo. Glenmorangie, Oban, Ardberg yes. Funny how peat was an imperfection from smoke when drying the grain and has become a desired taste.
Note Vintage Cellars has 20% off single malts when you buy 2. Not sure how compares to these prices but eg Lagavullin 16 $80.

    • I bounced a few of the prices above against the 20% off deal. Most came up cheaper here so I left VC out as you need to buy two to get the deal. Happy to be proven wrong though!

    • cant wait for the Lagavullin 16 sale. :/

  • +2

The pick of the bunch for me would be the Oban 14 yo.

    • +2

Whether you're first time or seasoned drinker of single malt. Not many can touch oban 14 given the price.

      • +1

I agree, its by far one of the most well balanced Single's for that price.

      • Yep, agreed. $88 is a bargain!

if you can find it Aberlour 12 yo for $55 is a BARGAIN!!

    • Last weekend in Dan's it was $54.90 as marked on the shelf, but still scanned at $67. Not sure if a price error or they're planning on matching it, but since it was marked at $55 that's what they sold it to me at (in store in Ascot Vale, VIC). Only reason I grabbed a bottle was because of the amazing price (and it's great stuff)

  • As a non whiskey drinker I really enjoyed the talisker Storm, found it very light and smooth.

  • Good post.Any free shipping codes?.

None that I could find on OzB.

I wish there was a site like camelcamelcamel for tracking whiskey prices!

    • +1

Perhaps not exactly what you're after but Boozle does this (with a tiny graph). It's more for comparing current prices though.

      • I rely on Boozle for all my alcohol price checks! The graph is frustratingly small but does give an indication of a price drop. Usually the biggest price drops are at the top of a search string like this or this.

        • yes that looks extremely difficult. Million dollar idea above for a coder ;)

          Camelcamelcamel for danmurphys/first choice

    • PriceHipster covers Woolies and Coles and includes alcohol. Unfortunately no Dan's or First Choice.

  • how does this compare to lagavulin 16yo in terms of the taste.

    • I think you'll like the Oban more than the Talisker if comparing to Lagavulin 16YO

      • Never heard of it, quite new to smokey whiskey… Lagavulin is the first ever, and I quote like it.

Just trying to explore something different.

Is oban the same with Lagavulin or different?

        • In the same league, smooth and has the smoky peaty taste like the Lagavulin

        • @Serapis: imo, Oban is way less peaty than Lagavulin, not to mention Lagavulin starts with a strong nose and doesnt let go until the end, Oban on the other hand starts with a kick, but settles down a lot quickly.

  • Gift to myself:

The Glenmorangie and the Oban! Thanks OP! =D

  • I'll just leave this here… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LS-ErOKpO4E

  • Dan Murphy's has 2x bottles of black label for $80. How does it compare? (i'm new to scotch drinking).

    • +1

Blended whisky is usually a bit cheaper than single malts. A lot of whisky drinkers prefer the taste of single malt but there are obviously heaps of people that like the taste of blends. I usually will use a blend to mix with dry ginger ale when I want a cooler drink; Dimple is my go to for this.

Try some black label and then grab a bottle of a popular single malt and make your own mind up. If you like them, consider starting a whisky journal so you know which ones to keep an eye out for in your bargain hunting!

      • Thanks for the advise. To be honest I'm not noticing a lot of difference between scotches. I'll probably get neg'd but they all taste the same to me although I've never switched between brands in the one session except for a nant tasting thing. I have tried Jameson, Dimple, glenfiddich, chivas, tullamore so far. I just have it with ice.

        • +1

Fair enough but those are mainly blends. Try Cragganmore or Dalwhinnie next time you buy a bottle, they are my preferred go to's for easy drinking that I can share with non-whisky drinkers without to much issue. Try having it neat (nothing but whisky in the glass), then try diluting it with a bit of water (2-3 drops), then see how you like it with ice.

Just like anything, you develop an appreciation for it. When I first started drinking beer, and whisky, it all tasted sh*t; a decade later I enjoy it!

  • Mmm I must be missing a detail or instruction. Ardberg 10 year is coming up at $82 at DM's for me?

    https://www.danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_903743/ardbeg-10-ye…

    • Must have changed prices. Still $64 at 1C so just price match?

      • yeah looks like it but strangely still listed via boozle.com.au as $65 at DM's. Perhaps there is a lag on the price updates

  • Thanks OP, love the layout and content of your original deal post!

  • Thanks for the great deal!

Does anyone know if they would restock? The whisky I wanted is out of stock :(
