Hmm not bad. Bound to be some savings on things, and it is likely I would spend $100 or more there….

    • Time to get a new iPad.

  • +15

You'd be better off buying the physical cards in store which are also 10% off anything $100+, as they can be used at Woolies.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/225198

    • -8

unless you don't shop at woolies

      • +4

Well, they can be used anywhere the Wish gift cards are accepted, so if you only shop at BigW and not at DM or Officeworks or Masters or Woolies Petrol or etc etc, then sure, buy this e-gift card for BigW. :P

        • Agree

        • +2

          officeworks?

        • @edgar28:

Oops I don't know if OW works, doesn't appear on the regular wish cards either. Probably not? :(

Sorry coles myer I got confused. OW not accepted on wish.

        • @edgar28:
          When did this happen? Officeworks?

        • +1

          @alterego13:

          Never, I made a mistake.

        • @kwchaz:
          Ah OK! Cheers mate :)

        • +1

i made mistake every hours hahah

    • +1

      I don't think that's correct.

The discount only applies to BIGW specific cards. I made the mistake of picking up a card which was usable on Woolies/BigW/etc and it didn't automatically apply the 10% discount at counter.

      • +6

No, I purchased a BIGW card at BIGW, paid $90 for each $100 card.
I then walked downstairs and used the BIGW card at Woolies, and it worked fine.

The BIGW cards are currently treated like regular Wish gift cards.

        • +1

Ahh interesting, that's pretty good then

        • +2

also can be used at Caltex Woolworths, used it this morning with BIGW physical gift card, the RED colour one.

        • +2

@fishandchips: I can also confirm, I did this yesterday.

      • +1

They intentionally make it confusing. There are BigW branded gift cards that work like any Wish gift card in all Woolworths group stores. Those are the ones I got with 10% off at Big W.

Then there are Big W store gift cards. Note the word "store". Those are the ones limited to Big W only. The e-gift cards from this deal are an example. There might be physical ones as well.

If you buy a physical card, check the small print on the back of the cardboard. If it reads "can be used at all stores listed on everydaygiftcards.com.au", then you should be fine.

        • If it reads "can be used at all stores listed on everydaygiftcards.com.au", then you should be fine.

All the differently decorated Big W gift cards I checked a couple of days ago said that…

What do the Big W only ones read? o_0

        • @Scrooge McDuck: I have never actually seen a physical Big W store card. I have had a Masters store card though, that one was quite clear that it can only be used at Masters in-store or online.

  • If you have a big w nearby, still better to grab a physical gift card that can be used at all woolworths based stores, as they are currently 10% off also

    • is that wish card? or big w card?

      • +1

BigW card but still accepted like a regular wish card.

        • +1

also can be used at Caltex Woolworths, used it this morning with BIGW physical gift card, the RED colour one.

  • With all these 10% discounts, seems like Big W may be having cash flow issues. I'd be weary of keeping any gift cards for too long.

    • +6

^ BigW going belly-up, out of the blue…
… You heard it here first!

      • +1

Nope. However the latest I read was that Kmart was eyeing off the shop space that BigW is currently using, hoping to get BigW kicked out so they can move in. Funny, I would have thought Kmart is worse off…

      • +1

I dont think so. When you look at it 10% discount on goods is really not a big deal … most will be spent rather quickly after Christmas … clearing old stock. If Woolworths cannot offer 10% discounts once a year then they shouldn't be in business.

        • +6

I'd bet that Gift Cards are generally MASSIVELY profitable due to holders losing them, forgetting them, not bothering to use up the full balance, etc and the expiry date.

        • @Scrooge McDuck:
Let alone the benefit of payment in advance.

    • Whilst Woolworths still owns it I wouldn't be too concerned. It does appear that they're trying to fatten up the bottom line in advance of a sale though - lets hope they learnt from their offloading of DSE.

    • +3

They just appointed a new CEO. I wouldn't be surprised if she turned it around like she did with Oroton.

The chance that Big W will suddenly go down and not honour gift cards is not very likely. I'd think Myer would go down before Big W.

    • With all these 10% discounts, seems like Big W may be having cash flow issues.

      I agree with the speculation.

I'd be weary of keeping any gift cards for too long.

Why would you? Even if there's an announcement that they'll cease to exist, there will still be opportunity to use up the gift cards. Possibly convert them to WISH gift cards to use at Woolies, or maybe even MYER ones.

      "wary" = careful,
      "weary" = tired

      • I think it was really a spell check issue though; you should see some of the words my phone insists on entering … #!@*&#@! … things I would never say!

        • +2

yeah - and to my phone - if you're reading this - I NEVER mean "ducking"

        • @shmahoo:

          I NEVER mean "ducking"

          Why not?

      • "wary" = careful,
        "weary" = tired

Maybe forumninja has a huge stack of gift cards…?

  • i bought the groupon big w, then went and bought a physical gift card, under the 10% off deal instore, so bought a $100 gift card for $90, with the groupon $100 gift card got for $92.50 (i bought during the 7.5% off deal).

Too lazy to calculate the money saved lol. but it works.

    • +2

They're not supposed to let you pay for gift cards with gift cards (all staff received an email about this), but if you find an inattentive shop attendant (not hard considering the Christmas rush!), you'll get away with it.

      • Some are getting stricter. I have even been asked for photo ID on the one occasion, but other times not.

        • Were you buying more than $1000?

        • Ouch. Never been asked for ID, and last time I bought $500 worth of cards.

        • @ronnknee: $1000

        • @unity1: From my experience, I only get ID'd when I make transactions over $1000. Not a big deal.

There was one time when a staff member was very cautious when serving me. I wanted to use eGift (purchased from Entertainment Book). He wanted to see if the eGifts were addressed to me (they weren't actually addressed to anyway since I bought them for myself).

      • +1

        I just had success

  • Yes. I bought a physical bigw gift card yesterday at the shop used my 5% off ewish gift card, so you actually spent $85.50 to get the $100 gift card.

    • so bigw gift card is same as wish card?

      • No. eWish card is better as you can use it in any woollies, bigw / Dan Murphy etc. whereas bigw gift card can only be used in bigw. I just get the ewish gift card at cashrewards website.

        • +1

BigW egift cards can't be used anywhere but BigW, whilst BigW physical cards can be used at other stores. eWish are certainly usable anywhere.

        • Oh really? The physical bigw g/card can be used in any woollies related stores?

        • @pearl2013:

Yeah, I bought one the other day, walked downstairs and checked out both at self-checkout and at the reception desk without any issues.

        • @kwchaz: thanks :)

  • my only concern is that everydaygiftcards.com.au keep delaying issue of the cards lately. Before it took around 2 hours to get egiftcard but now could take 30-100 hours to get one. I'm still waiting for my masters gift card from last week :(

    • Could be Groupon or other deal sites delaying the transfer of details to everydaygiftcards. When I buy direct from everydaygiftcards, I've received them in about 30-60min.

      • I bought wishEgift card directly from them and it took 26 hours to get it last week. Bought monday morning, got it wednesday morning.

    • +1

I got 2 e-cards from there within 2 hours last Thu & Fri.

      • Last week… same here.

I ordered a few yesterday and still haven't received my order!

      • I ordered 6 earlier today, and got the codes 2hrs later.

  • +1

So if I'm reading this correct I could purchase a physical Big W gift card to use at Masters and combine it with their current 10% off deal?
I'm in the market for an aircon and an extra 10% off would be huge.

    • Correct!

      • +2

Awesome, I just had a read the through the other thread which also confirmed it, looks like I'll be getting this $1850 aircon for $1480!

        • +1

If you can figure a way to use cash rewards then you could get another 2% back… it might mean having to use an egift card as I believe you have to pay on checkout with masters for click and collect (not 100% sure as I've never used C % C at masters).

In any case, a good saving!

    • +1

You should check think that FRESH10 10% off expires today and I haven't seen an updated code as yet.. I'm hoping so I get keys to my new place tomorrow so want to go nuts if I can!

      • +1

The FRESH10 has expired last night. I was purchasing some timber last night and their website was down and I could not check out.

        • Sorry my mistake, I thought it said the 21st on the docket.. Well here's hoping another code drops soon for us both!

  • +1

"With fast delivery via email " took three weeks for Groupon to process mine, hope these are quicker :)

    • +1

Got it in 4 hours :D

      • -2

You win some you lose some. Get over it

        • And in this case I won again, thanks! 😊

        • @clarky: just trying to warn other users who want to buy it.

  • EB has the same offer might as well get that instead from cash rewards

  • Just ordered mine from entertainment book and arrived within an hour. Did notice that Big W at Southland will only sell gift cards through their registers. At Woolies this isn't the case but guess I'll find out if they kick up a fuss when trying to buy Myer Gift Cards with my Big W e gift card.

    • Any luck using your E-Book Big W egift cards at Woolies? I just tried to convert these into WISH gift cards at Woolies without any luck.

    • Well went to Big W Southland and the check out staff didn't bat an eye lid that I was paying with an e-gift card for another gift card.

  • +3

Well despite it saying in big letters "Big W only" this worked fine for me at Dan Murphy online.

Can't say if it would work in store or at Woolies. Suspect not but I bit the bullet, ordered one and tried online at DM and went through just like a Woolies card.

    • Great news. :)

  • +1

Maybe hold off on getting one for this. Dan murphys advised there was an error with my gift card when I went to pick it up. So looks like even though it processed okay got rejected later on.

    • So are they requesting you pay again?

    • Bugger, would have been great if this worked too. :(

  • So just went to Big W southland again, mentioned they were big w e gift cards and I wanted to purchase Myer gift cards. Got accused of fraud and that I'd go to jail. (this was from their very friendly service supervisor) and then asked to leave the store.

Contacted Big W on their 1300 number, complaint lodged and then spoke with their gift card team. They said that you CAN purchase another store gift card with a big w e gift card as long as you are not purchasing a Woolworths group gift card.

    • +1

There are some very uneducated simple folk around. If the "supervisor" properly understood what you were trying to do, then he is seriously incapacitated. Incidentally, even the advice given by the "1300 number" is not complete. Of course you can purchase another store gift card with a Big W egift card at Big W. As for purchasing another WW group gift card, there is no prohibition in the T&C's but some people have posted that head office distributed a message to Big W staff to not authorise those transactions. Either way, it is NOT an issue of fraud - just an issue of interpretation of the T&C's and implementation or non-implementation of head office policy. Note: The whole issue only arises because BigW offered a 10% in-store discount on its cards for the week leading up to Christmas. Without that one-off week, where BigW tried to heavily capitalise on the biggest shopping week of the year, the entire thing would be a non-issue. And with the type of numbers being bandied around, they look to have created a lot of demand that otherwise would not have been there.

  • so had a look at the T&C's and they really are quite vague on some details. There's nothing about its against the policy to purchase another gift card, just can't be used for certain instore items like DVD hire, photo's etc and payment of wow money credit cards.

I'll be curious to see what feedback I get from the complaint, usually id just take it on the shoulder but when a supervisor decides to step the line and accuse someon of committing fraud and they'd go to jail for it, yeah might follow this one up.

Funny thing is, she said that the person that served me yesterday would need to be retrained, appears it would be her on customer service and gift card rules.

    • also see the discussion here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/226232#comment-3310847

…but I don't think they'll care much. It's one of those issues where the "supervisor" was incorrect and totally out of line but the policy of not wanting customers to buy discount gift cards with discount gift cards is understandable in certain situations. It wouldn't be hard at their end to implement such a policy into the system nor to make the T&C's clear - if that's what they want to do.

  • its only giving 7.5 % off now

    Big W Store eGift Card
    1 X $500.00
    $500.00
7.50% discount on BIG W Store eGift Card -$37.50

    Am I missing something here?

    • +1

OP did say it ended 31/12/15 although that has a strikethrough, I think I got an email saying that date too. The banner when you click through still says - Cashrewards members save 10% on BIG W Store eGift Cards

Edit, Tightarse has now fixed it. This deal is over, it is now 7.5%
