  • Good price, seems to be $15 flat rate for shipping

  • Thanks OP.
I'm starting to run out of space on my TS451 with 4x WD RED 5TB drives running in Raid 5, and buying this TS651 with 2x extra 5TB drives costs about the same as buying 4x 6TB, with the bonus of a lot more extra storage. So I'm strongly considering this.

  • Is this a good nas? I'm looking for a nas to store my media and pictures etc. This 6 Bay is half the price of the 8 bay synology I was looking at.

    • synology is always more expensive with easier setup and bit more features. but qnap is quite good too.

  • I was considering a Synology DS415Play and hadn't considered this one. Need to research a bit more but specs look impressive. I especially want to run plex.

  • +1

I was a bit disappointed that there is no support for bitrot detection on the qnap nas's

    • Doesn't look like too many consumer grad NAS's support ZFS, so QNAP isn't alone with that one.

      • actually readynas does for sure and synology has started doing it now.
You don't need to do ZFS you can also use btfs (butterfs) which is what the consumer grades are using now.

QNAP is the one of the only quality nas builders that doesn't do it now i think.

        • Ah ok, I just looked before to see if Synology supports it and I couldn't find anything. I didn't look up Readynas. My have a look to see what their prices are.

        • @fatpizza: I got a great price on a qnap and a readynas at one stage (off here) and bought both one for me (the qnap) and the readynas for a friend. I like the UI for the QNAP but in almost way the readynas was better.

Lower power at idle and operation
          encryption (better implementation)
butterfs support (haven't tried it yet but apparently it works well)

Wish Id gone with the readynas myself hehe

QNAP is a solid box though. It comes across as very reliable and well put together. Just key features are missing.

  • I have a QNAP TS412. I'm not sure if the problem affects other models but currently (and for quite a while) the software doesn't correctly connect to a VPN service. Do thorough research on this before committing to a QNAP.

  • Is this unit powerful enough to run Plex?

    • +1

To answer my own question (and hopefully to help others).

Yes it does support Plex, but it may struggle at 1080p.

      • That's assuming transcoding a needed by the looks of it. If you aren't transcoding it'll probably perform a lot better.

        • I only need a nas to stream my movies and store my pictures. Would this be a good buy or I should spend a little more for something better?

        • @kaal: I've never owned a NAS, but I imagine this would do more than fine for movie streaming and picture storage.
