Furniture Quality What to Look for

Hi all,

I am in the market for new furniture - sofa and dining table first off the ranks. Is generally, December/Jan a good time for furniture sales? Where are good places to go (am in East/South East Melb).

Also, how do you tell what is a quality construction for a sofa? One sofa im looking at from Adriatic (from China) notes the following:

The frame consists of Meranti Solid Wood and Plywood, which has a 10 year Warranty
High Density polyurethene foam is used.
Pocket springs, Polyester Fibre and Elastic webbing make up the suspension system.
Upholstery is of all Genuine Full Cow leather.

My concern with imported furniture is that furniture shops are not around for long so any warranty they provide is useless if they close down!?

Any guidance appreciated.

  • What type of leather? Top grain, full grain, or bonded?

    • Thanks. I'll ask. Which is better?

      • Top of full grain is fine.. I think top is more supple. Bonded leather is leather in the same way my "wooden" floor is wood.. Basically just minced leather dust glued together and painted.

for bed mattresses and sofa I would get brand new, everything else - gumtree

  • OK he said it was corrected leather. Meaning its the mid level grain and restamped for the consistent grain look and softer feel. He said its def not bonded and he would not recommended it either.

I think they re-open in mid-January but I would recommend that you consider Casey Auctions.

They have a mixed range of goods - from Super A-Mart cheapies to things that are of a higher quality. You may be lucky and find a premium item here and there.

We bought a table (10 seater) and chairs for about $1400 - the table alone was about $3500 in Harvey Norman. We also bought a lazy boy sofa set (2 +3 seater sofa) for about $800, along with many other items.

It is an auction so you need to be prepared and know your market prices so that your bids are realistic. You also need to be prepared to wait but if you watch the auction list each week you will soon see that items are often repeated.

They are in Hallam. This is their facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Casey.Auction.Group/?fref=nf

    • Good idea - was trying to find clearance centres but hadn't thought of auction houses. thanks for the tip!
