  • Also worth checking out what on OEM one is worth, an OEM charger for my Dell XPS13 is around $19 shipped on dells website (I think I used a coupon to get that, can't recall)

    • +8

      That's very rare.

OEM pricing I've seen for Toshiba and HP are over $100 easy.

But you're right, no harm in shopping around. Bare in mind, these are universal… your old laptop with new power supply will be upgraded in a few years, and you'll then have a newish power supply with nothing else to power.

    • Any link or part number for the OEM charger?

  • the dicksmith branded ones are around $80 still.

    • They were on clearance for $20 at my local store

  • Will 90w be suitable formost laptops, or 65w?

    • +2

Just check the label on the underside of your lappy as it should show the power rating required.
or if you need to work it out….(Power = Voltage x Current)

    • Completely depends on your laptop. I have two laptops, one 90w and the other 65w.

Read the writing on the charger of your laptop (the laptop doesnt always mention the wattage).

Edited: Or use the helpful calculation posted just before me :)

      • Thanks, v helpful

  • Thanks, was eyeing this off a few months back to save me unplugging my OEM charger to take my laptop travelling with me.. And lets me not have to take my USB charger saving more weight/bulk in the carry on luggage. Now fingers crossed it fits my HP laptop!

Saw a couple of these at Fairfield dse, didn't buy because didn't need but hope someone else can make use of it. Did manage to pick up a laser 10 port USB charger for $10 hehe

    • It's showing $120 on dick smith ebay.

How did you get the $29 price?

      Thanks

    • Still showing it as $120 bucks click and collect on my screen?

    • Link please.

Was curious whether this might be hackable to work with a Macbook Pro…

    Seems it would be!

Just need a Magsafe2 connector (around $10) and a couple of barrel plugs…

  • I have laptop from overseas with overseas plug as this has au plug would this be handy or am i just cheaper with a travel adaptor as this would end up being an expensive item for me or am i missing something here?what else could i use for?is in store cheaper or same as listed on ebay?

    • Travel adaptor or just buy a cord with the correct end suited to your power supply and an Aussie plug on the end….. Either the torture 8 or other version, it's only be cord taking Aussie plug/240v to your power supply adaptor with the laptop plug

Or ebay. Or pay 3x as much at dick smith etc.

  • Can you use DS gift card on ebay?

  • Could i use this for a LG2240E Flatron monitor by any chance?

  • Seems like my laptop uses 45W power adaptor (19v @ 2.37A). Does anyone know if I can still use either of the 90W or 65W adaptor for my laptop in this case?

    • +1

Depends on the plug size. So anything like a chromebook or ultrathin are likely to use a new plug not supplied

      • +3

Nosh… two things are most important when it comes to power supply.

        Voltage and Polarity.

The voltage MUST match. If it doesnt you can break your equipment or even blow it up/start a fire!
Polarity also important… If the centre of the plug is positive on the OEM charger, it must also be positive on the new one.

Amps is the 'ommph' behind the voltage. As long as your charger meets or exceeds the requirements of the device, its ok.
If your charger is less than required, you'll burn out your charger as it cant handle the device requirements.

If you still arent sure, google it. But what I've said above is correct. Match voltage and polarity, and match or exceed amps.

Go the 65w charger. If set for 19v it'll give you 3.42A… perfectly fine for a 2.37A device.

Look at the USB chargers you can get for Apple. Some are 1.2A and are only suitable for iPhones. Others 2A and will do both iPhone and iPads. But connecting the iPhone to a 2A wont kill it… because it only takes what it needs.

Another way to remember it is a PC power supply.
        Bigger is better… 1000w better than a 500w cheapy, but a 1000w wont blow up anything :).

        • Thanks for the great info UFO.
My ASUS has G750 power brick says input 100-240V 50-60 Hz 2.5A
          The output says 19.5V —- 9.23A

So do we base it on the input or output?

Just checked on another website and it says this

          Specification
Replacement ASUS G750 AC Power Supply Charger Adapter

          Input: AC100-240V
          Output: DC19V 7.9A
          Power: 180W

        • +1

@lachlan1: it's based on the output. Yours requires 180W so these chargers won't suit. I've never seen a laptop charger that needed as much power as yours, did you buy it from Arnold Schwarzenegger?

        • -1

          The voltage MUST match.

To some extent. But switch mode supplies are not that fussy, so swapping 16V and 19V inputs will probably not cause trouble, aside from charging more slowly.

If your charger is less than required, you'll burn out your charger

Absolutely false. They all have overload protection. It's no longer 1975 with 50Hz transformers.

        • @manic:

Hang on mate… are you saying that a lower rated power supply (ie 45w) wont have a significantly shorter life trying to feed a 90w device?

Because overload protection or not, that charger WILL die early. It's not "absolutely false" at all. Continuously overloading a charger is going to kill it, plain and simple.

And voltage is very important. You are talking about under voltage, but even 1 or 2 volts over is enough to fry circuit boards. Under wont hurt anything, but even a little over can. Best to match it perfectly if at all possible.

          And separately… @lachlan1

Holy crap dude, that's some power hungry laptop you have! Yaziyo is right. You need a specific 180w (or more?!?) charger and these ones wont suit at all.

Forget about the input requirements. Output says: 19.5V and 9.23A. That's some serious juice for a laptop!

        • @UFO:

          UFO is correct.

Constantly using a charger at max load will decrease the lifespan of the unit significantly.

It also has the potential to cause damage to the device it is charging.

With any kind of charger, more is (almost) always better!

        • @UFO:

are you saying that a lower rated power supply (ie 45w) wont have a significantly shorter life trying to feed a 90w device?

Usually the charger outlasts the laptop, but sure, frequent use at max load increases the risk of earlier failure.
The other problem is that the charger may simply cut out if overloaded.

but even 1 or 2 volts over is enough to fry circuit boards.

It doesn't get to the circuit boards. Laptops etc have their own internal DC_DC switch-mode power supplies, so a larger input voltage will mean less current drawn.
I did manage to fry a raspberry pi once by giving it the wrong voltage, but they feed the 5V input direct to the chips.
I don't want to start lecturing on switch-mode power supply design, but just saying that in practice they are far more flexible than you may realise.
It ain't like a light bulb.

  • Ah ok. I was trying to figure out the watts I didn't even think of plug size. I have one of those Toshiba 2in1 laptop so maybe it's not supplied like you said. Thanks.

    • +1

In addition to the plug size, the charger's voltage needs to be the same (which it is), and its amperage should be equal or greater than what your laptop needs (which it is also).

  • My laptop needs 190W :-(

  • Belkin website shows that usb charge port is only available for 65W and not for 90W; also 65W is more expensive at $119.95 as compared to $89.95 for 90W

    http://www.belkin.com/au/F5L134/p/P-F5L134/

    65W is available for $40 http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Belkin-65W-Ultra-Slim-Laptop-Powe…

    • i got the 90w and it has the usb charge point.

    • This deal would be for F5L134au90W.

  • Thanks for confirmation. Belkin needs to update description for 90W one.

    • there seems to be 2 different types. normal and a slim version, the slim ones are the ones that i seen in dicksmiths, both with usb.

there was also a targa branded one for around $40

  • Just a note, I previously bought a Belkin universal laptop charger and the head that fits my laptop is extremely tight. I feel like i'm going to break it every time i plug and unplug it.

  • No delivery option via eBay. Damn

  • Thanks just bought one. Not many left in SA, I tried C&C churchill rd and got past the paypal before it said unavailable. St mary's worked and the only other store looks like mount barker.

  • Most store in Melbourne out of stock now

  • Plenty of stock in Blacktown along with other chargers BT targus priced at $25- 40

  • I'm having a lot of issues trying to checkout. It keeps telling me that it's either expired or been purchased or something.

  • "Due to store theft, the item you purchased is not available and a refund request has been placed for your order." LOL tricky Dick will do anything to get out of a bargain.

Somehow I had a hunch and did not use my $25 amaysim coupon on this.

    • Due to store theft.

Pfft. Best excuse I've heard from a retailer so far.

  • Missed out on this deal but got a Targus 90W standard one without USB for $30. Comes with 12 plugs and if your laptop doesn't fit then you can call Targus and they'll send out a free compatible tip. Seems like the Belkin only comes with 9 and not sure if they'll send a free tip like Targus does. Also, the Targus one doesn't let you reverse the polarity (in case you had to and that your device didn't have polarity protection).
