New Laptop around $1000

So I have an old Dell Inspiron 1564 (I3,4gb Ram) from 2010 and I'm thinking about upgrade before I leave the country in February.
This year I bought a SSD for my old laptop and the Note runs like a new one now, but I still want to upgrade.

I was thinking about continue with Dell, since I didn't have any problems with my laptop ( I'll not consider ASUS as everything that I bought from them, sucks) but I accept other ideas.

So, I don't have many requirements, just browse online, run some engineering programs ( autocad, Aspen) and maximum screen of 15.6". I was thinking about a I7 with 16 GB RAM, but I don't think I'll find one in this range of price.

What do you guys think about the the Dell Inspiron 5000? It comes with I7-6500U, 8GB Ram, 1TB and a AMD Radeon M335 with 4GB. My plans are to buy a laptop similar to this one and a SSD and probably +8GB RAM, since it's cheaper to do that than to buy a laptop with the configuration that I want.

What do you guys think? By the way, should I wait for boxing day or something like that? Are prices of products here in Australia, lower in January or February ?

Thanks for your help.

How about a refurbished unit from the Dell Outlet? Looks and works like new, but can be as mush as 50% off.

    • Wow, there are some really good prices there. The only problem for me is that I'm not going to stay in Australia, so if I need the warranty because of it being refurbished, it will be impossible or very expensive to request

Then why buy from Australia? where are you going to move? Technology in Australia is generally pretty expensive, but much cheaper in America / Canada areas. A laptop that normally sells for $499 USD would sell for a $699A locally.

Dell Warranties can usually be transferred when you move internationally. It is done through this portal here but there is a disclaimer in one of the links inside stating that not all forms of service contracts are transferrable.

        • I'm going to move to Brazil. The electronics in Australia are expensive but cheaper than in Brazil, that's why I'm going to buy here. Also, I can get the taxes back when I move, so I'll save some money.

Thanks for letting me know about being possible to transfer the warranty. I'll probably use it.

I would recommend an Asus Zenbook. An i5 would probably get you by. These days it really depends on whether you want something fairly light or not.

With a Zenbook you are looking at pretty good specs for the light weight, not too much to compromise.

Otherwise yeh go with a Dell brick. An i7 16GB is probably overkill but nothing wrong with that.

    • I made a promise to myself of never buying an Asus product anymore. I have an Tablet Memopad 7 HD and a zenphone 2. I hate both. They crash all the time and the support does not exist.

I'm thinking about an I7 with 16gb because I want a laptop that lasts for at least 5~6 years =)

THe Inspiron 5000 series is gewd.

    • I had to search whats the meaning of gewd LOL

but thanks, I guess I'll probably take this one.

  • OP, I would recommend getting a HP Envy 15 K039-TX from office works: http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/hp-envy-15-… It is only $850, plus when you travel overseas you can get discount from TRS: https://www.border.gov.au/Trav/Ente/Tour/Are-you-a-traveller I currently own one of these laptops and they are extremely good. To give you an idea, they have the same CPU as an Alienware gaming PC that costs thousands. It can also run GTA V on max settings and Battlefield 4 on Ultra. Also, if you want you can upgrade the 8gb of RAM to 16gb, because only one of two RAM slots are used. Hope this helped,
    Kind Regards,

    • Do they still have issues with the hinge ???

I had 2 Envy 15s from 2014 separate at the hinge , as HP uses glue instead of screws on hinge/screen on the Envy 15.

      • No, I am using it now and it is great! I would definitely recommend it!

        • Cool will check it out. I am tempted with a 13.5" Surfacebook at $2200, but would prefer the extra screen real estate of the Envy.

        • @samprofs:
The Surfacebook looks pretty good if you get the i7 16gb ram one, but the price tag doesnt look that great, it costs more than double the Envy 15 and has about the same power.

        • @bargainmuncher:

Good point. However, as I will just use it for my mortgage brokerage it is sufficient in power. I do like the base Surfacebook, as it will allow me to sign pdf docs and go paperless. Hmmm…. dilemas. Currently using a MacBook Pro Retina.

        • @samprofs:
Well, both of them will be an upgrade from a mac! If you need to sign documents you can buy a usb slate for the computer which lets you write. If looks dont matter to much, i would recommend the Envy 15, as it is half the price of the surfacebook.

        • @bargainmuncher:

Agreed. Thanks for your help. Much appreciated. Will look into one next fee days.

    • Screen 1366x768. No wonder its $850.

      • It can play every game on the highest settings and looks good! Especially since it is so cheap, i do not need a 4k UHD display!
