New Fridge - Quietness a Priority

Hey all,
Looking to get a new Fridge - requirements I'm chasing are French Door, 550L+, will fit 1780x950x600 (without door - i.e. counter depth) with a few cm to breath. Plumbed ice/water is a nice to have but not at the cost of reliability and noise. I've been looking at clearance models of LG and F&P fridges that fit the specs but I've got no way of knowing which will run louder.

The reason noise is a big deal is because I have a very (very!) open plan living space and when my current fridge cycles on, it drives me crazy - especially when I'm watching a movie. The current one is easily over a decade old, so I'm sure I can attribute much of the noise to that.

So yeah, any experience or advice here?

On that note, is boxing day generally any cheaper for large white goods? Seems there are some good deals right now.

Oh and also, if anyone knows where I can find a Choice Fridge review for 2014 or 2015, that'd be aces :)

Thanks in advance!

Oh and also, if anyone knows where I can find a Choice Fridge review for 2014 or 2015, that'd be aces :)

Your local public library. You probably can't borrow it, but you can definitely read it and probably even make photocopies.

    • A spate of Choice requests on OzBargain, lately. Sufficiently motivated to check at local library, recently:-Choice available for loan, but all vaguely recent issues - back two years, were out. Similar situation in other pigeon holes for the many other mags available for loan. Likely, perpetually, the case.

Maybe you can reserve, for when they come back in - I didn't ask.

      • I guess that's why some libraries no longer loan out Choice.

        • Which ones have them just for reference? You and the OP are both in Melbourne. I'm sure that he/she would like to know.

Maybe save some barking and do a ring-around, if you don't know, offhand. OP would be grateful, I'm sure. :)

        • All the libraries that I've been to (although that's only three, lol) have them. You can check online if your local library has it, or you could probably ring them too.

I just did a search of ozbargain and found this https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/215205

It appears that you might be able to get free online access to Choice magazine through the Melbourne City Library.

        • @pjetson: That looks like an option, albeit a somewhat involved one!

Given the particular (on many devices, irritating) way that the Choice website displays data, I am actually almost keen enough to see how it gets displayed in that app.

Just out of mild curiosity, give me a sense of it, if you decide to give it a go. Ta!

  • Choice publish fridge tests every handful of months, including in current issue. One of the things that Choice actually does pretty well is test whitegoods.

Considerable performance detail about each fridge model. Significant variation in performance between brands and models. Worth reading, prior to a significant purchase.

Slightly older-than-current models, of the sort that you may be looking at, tend to be included in each round-up.

Of the specifics that seem to concern you most, in current article:

One large (Fisher and Paykel) french-door, recommended; another plus an LG also tested that possibly reference, in most respects, slightly older models.

Fisher and Paykel are not the brand they once were, but still score higher than LG for fridge reliability (smaller sample size, but still stat significant). 87 vs 81 (% without problems in previous 12 months).

Both F&P tested gave a dB reading of 34. The LG, 38.

Decibel scale is logarithmic. Each 3dB difference accounts for a doubling or halving of the noise, but perception of doubling or halving is at the 10dB difference mark for humans.
You're a sheepdog, OP, so all bets are off in relation to the last bit…

Even as a human, you may notice a slight, but maybe still for you, significant, difference, between 34 and 38 dB fridge-noise, but it would likely depend more on the specific frequencies and harmonics involved from each fridge compressor and the coolant circulation.

    Does that yelp help?

As likely BC/Kelpie that will chase an ice-cube around on a kitchen floor until it melts, you really shouldn't be considering any refrigerator that actually features an ice-maker, given the slip-hazard for humans that you clearly intend to create.

    Bad Dog!

  • Hey all,

First up, thanks for all your feedback. After posting and reading your advice I felt bad not responding. I did go out and get the choice mag like you guys suggested. I ended up getting the Samsung srf639gdls more because it was a ripper deal than anything else. Its got fantastic features but its noise level is absolutely aggravating (at least as bad as the old one). The saving grace is I got a proper ozbargain price - JB Hifi had advertised a price that matched Master's clearance price, then Good Guys advertised a price that matched JB.. and then ebay had 10% or 15% off and I got it from the Good Guys ebay store for $1673 delivered.

I'm happy enough with the purchase because its got great features but I really need to figure out how to get it quieter. I've noticed its a bit out of level, but I'm not really expecting that to quieten it down. I've had it for a month now, was hoping it would quieten down but it hasn't. I guess I'll Samsung but I'm not expecting much. Its funny because the inverter seems to only just go between loud and really loud/grinding noise mode.

    • i've got an LG that's pretty quiet. Until it makes ice. then it sounds like the roof caved in….
