P&O Cruise - South Pacific ex Sydney - looking for someone to share cabin cost

This is not a forum post seeking discussion, but I thought as a good a place as any to potentially link up with others in the same boat as me (or hopefully - excuse the pun) and find someone also wanting to cruise but don't want to pay the full cost of a cabin themself.

Looking to do a cruise such as https://www.pocruises.com.au/cruises/fiji-adventure/j625 or https://www.pocruises.com.au/cruises/fiji-adventure/j625 , both starting at around $1950 pp discount with some agents at the moment (twin), but based on previous years unlikely to drop to $100 p/n as other cruises often do due to fewer cruises going to Fiji. I would consider a few other cruises of 11 days or more depending on itinerary (P&O/Carnival), but must be outside school holiday time, and May to October - best time of year when heading to warmer areas. Age preferred: 35-50, or a little older like me if young at heart, easy to get on with, male would be easier but would consider female if she was used to travelling in mixed company. I am looking for someone to share cabin cost, not looking for cruise companion!

I have cruised many times in the past but not for over 10 years due to the need to now book a cabin for myself rather than book a berth in a shared cabin as I have always done in the past. When travelling solo this was ideal, however due to a couple of issues many years and the influx of newer boats which are predominantly 2 berth cabins, the cruise lines will now only take bookings for a cabin - for yourself or you and a friend/partner/kids. None of my friends are available when I want to go or keep changing their mind so I have given up on waiting for them.

When sharing cabins in the past (2/4 bth) I was always been put with similar age/sex and never had a problem, at worst we had little to do with each other socially, at the best we have got on great, some have had other friends on board (M/F) and we have done a lot of things together - drinks before dinner, dinner, gone to entertainment afterwards, shared a taxi to do our own sightseeing when in ports etc.

If interested or know anyone who might be I can be contacted to discuss in greater detail.

lol I knew the replies would go straight there.

  • This is quite a nice idea. For anyone who hasn't cruised before, we recently went on our first and literally spent no time in the room, so odds are unless the person is a snorer sharing a room is a great idea.

You don't really even have to poop in the room if that makes you uncomfortable.

Add this to the (ever growing) list of things I would've done before a family.

    • You are right, can't understand why people pay for upmarket rooms or with a porthole or balcony. Apart from sleeping, changing clothes and having a shower I am never in there!! I had always booked a bed in a 4 bth cabin, sometimes there were a couple of mates, mostly 4 strangers. As I have cruised a few times I have been upgraded from 4 bth to twin, and last time single …still paying 1/4 of 4 bth price :-). I have tried pointing this matter out to booking agents that even if I was to able to book a bed in a shared twin bth I would probably be upgraded to a room to myself anyway, so why not give me a room in the first place at shared price :-). No one has any common sense!!

  • I know a lot of people who just pay the double price and go on cruises alone, waiting for last minute bargains to get a good price.

Are you a member of any community groups? Normally an easy way to find cruising buddies.

    Goodluck!!

    • Double price for a cabin to myself stops being such an attractive option for a holiday, I would rather do something else with the same money. I normally aim for a discounted fare at around $100 p/n, but most of those heavily discounted are less desirable cruises in length, destination, ports (actual ports not anchor destinations).

I do intend to possibly put up a post on some social group pages, but those groups I am in are probably not interested in cruises like this.

    • Thanks, I had looked for groups like this bad had not found any. Requested to join.

  • How will i know i can trust you while i sleep?

    • Maybe you can do a background check and see if he is a standing member of the community?

      • Ha ha, they are the ones that hit the headlines for doing the wrong thing. Think of all the people who have been on the news in the last few years - sports people, politicians, clergy!!

I actually think there was less risk when cruise companies put people together as no one knew who they would end up with, whereas doing what I am doing could leave me vulnerable to less desirably room mate!! But meeting up first would solve some concerns.

    • Ditto!!! From my experience travelling it is the people from outside your own group or room who are the ones that steal things ….or take advantage of peoples drunk/drugged state as occurred a couple of times on Australian cruises which hit the headlines.

Are you on cruise critic? I find their Australian board quite friendly. They might have some suggestions.

  • Nice opener for someone like me, for some time thinking of cruising (out of Brisbane)but lacking anyone sufficiently footloose to be able to take advantage of last minute deals on share cabin basis. Mid-60s; non-smoker; much reduced drinker; FB ID Sally Silvers. Interested females message me there? (As I haven't got the hang of OzB PM)

  • For female travellers, you could meet like minded people on https://www.thelmandlouise.com to share your travel plans and meet others who might wish to travel with you. Can specify age and interests for your travel companions etc. not aware of a similar service for men though,

My friend who often goes on cruises alone is finding some really good prices on single rooms on the Celebrity Solstice (looking on the ozcruising website). The single rooms are only a bit more than the double rooms per person.

  • I'm looking at budget cruises in south Pacific. I have read some overseas cruises do cater for singles but unfortunately cruises in this area don't care about single passengers - I have asked many times but get the sane result. Thanks Ms Caz, I will consider posting on Cruise Critic - it appears to have more than just cruise feedback.

Cruising solo rocks. I am married and still do it all the tie. Five cruises last year. I won't do P&O Australia. I find fabulous deals on RCCL close to the sailing date. Think $50 night and $90 a night for some brilliant cruises.

I just booked a balcony for a ten day cruise with RCCL for $1400 for two. It includes the south pacific and checked some of their other sailings and it seemed like there was zero single supplement. You should closely look at each cabin category. A balcony room may have no single supplement making it cheaper than an inside with a single supplement.

Cruiseagency.com.au is the best place to look at every single category at a glance and get an idea of how much you are being stung for going solo.

If you can go on short notice that would be best. The so called wave season is coming up and and I expect you'llbe able to secur berths with little surcharge but you have to act quickly.

RCCL lets you put anything on a 24 hour hold and often goes on for much longer.

What city are you hoping to sail out of?

    • Do you book those last minute prices direct with Royal Caribbean or via cruise agency?
Also do you mind sharing what the wave season is? We found good prices in November but since then it has all been too pricey.
