$50 x 10 fake notes received. What to do?

I received 10 fake $50 notes when I sold my second-hand iPhone in July. I just left it at home and today I tried to deposit them into ATM but was rejected.

Then I checked and realised they are fake notes. After googling I did find news about in Jun here:

I'll report to police but is there any hope that I can get my money back? I don't know the guy's name but I do have his phone number. But it might be difficult to prove that it was him that gave me these notes.

its wrong but go spend them at a shop

    • Please don't do this.

I won't cuz $500 does not worth the risk of being accused of crime.

      dont*

  • $500 cash just sitting around for 6 months!?

    • Yeah, that really happened… I was too lazy to visit a bank…

      • you do know that most shops these days take cash?

        • Sure, I already used ~$550 of the notes he gave me and the fake ones are among those left. I always use card when I can. Yes, I only used ~$550 cash in 5 months.

    • is that weird or something?

  • I hate to say it but because you already know they are fake, there is no legal way to get your money back. It would be impossible to prove where you got the notes from. The notes get confiscated as soon as you report them…

    • Then maybe I just cut them into pieces and throw away to save me a trip to police station? I doubt police will really do anything about it.

May as well report it, you never know what they may be able to do. That guy might already have a record of spending fake cash.

I know someone who once received a fake $50 from an ATM (the plastic window was missing). They went straight into the bank but in the end they lost $50 because it was impossible to prove the note came from the ATM.

        • The ATM does not have a camera?

        • @lowsfer: The ATM does have a camera but unfortunately isn't positioned to see withdrawals, only the faces of people that use them.

          @Kilgharrah:
OK, that's bad luck. Wonder why the notes were not checked by the ATM when the bank put them in. The bank/ATM manufacturer should have implemented that.

  • Is this a plot from a script/novel?
It sounds a bit far fetched that you accepted a bunch of fake cash anonymously, then waited months before discovering it.

    • No, it's real. I sold my iphone for $1000+ and just left it in my cabinet in my home. Some times I take one or two notes from them but not frequently cuz usually I use card. Recently I sold my other staff and got another $2000+, then I think I have too many notes and should put it in bank. So I tried to deposit it into ATM and these 10 notes were not recognised.

  • How good are the counterfeits? How do their feel? Do they have the see through window? Most counterfeits are easy to see/feel. Post some photos up.

    • Very easy to recognise. I'm sure I won't be cheated if they were given to me one by one, or one of them was on the top or bottom of the stack. They feel different. All these 10 notes have the same serial ID. I think that's enough proof.

  • Put up a similar ad, wait for him to take the bait, bring some mates and detain him until you call the police!

Or accept this as a life lesson and move on. Not much you can do mate.

    • But I still can't prove it's him that gave me these fake notes …
Yep, I take it as a lesson. Thanks.
