CPU is 2 gens behind current. I'd pass.

    not a good deal

  • Are you sure the RAM is upgradeable on these? For some of the earlier X1s at least, the RAM is soldered in.

    • Correct-soldered in and not upgradeable on this model. 4gb just isn't enough these days.

      • thanks. I've updated the OP

  • don't believe they are upgradeable at all

I believe the RAM is soldered to the board.
    not user upgradeable.

  • It's the current model thats being replaced early next year.

There will be two new X1 models. X1 without touch (standard laptop) and X1 with touch that folds backwards.

    • this is the second generation X1 Carbon, with that awful touchstrip function key and integrated trackpoint buttons. The third generation which is the current (but will be superseded) uses a fifth generation i Core CPU (so it would be i5-5xxx). I have this laptop and it is pretty shit.

    Not upgradeable at all…

That looks like a Gen2. Current model Gen 3 has the hard function keys, not the soft keys.
    Ram is soldered.

      Gen 2 is the worst.

I deal with them daily at work, Gen 2 has the highest failure rate with 'flashing keyboard' meaning motherboard failure.

  • i5 processor also selling 1299$ , ?

These are the 2nd generation model with the integrated trackpad/trackpoint buttons and the F1-F12 touch panel. They also have a weird/non standard keyboard layout which you get used to after a whle. The current model is the 3rd generation where they went back to a more standard keyboard layout similar to the 1st generation model. They also separated the trackpad and the trackpoint buttons again.

We have a quite a lot of the 2nd generation models at work and nearly all of them have had the motherboard replaced under warranty. Not sure if the issue affects all of the models or just certain ones, but basically the laptop will start blue screening and then get stuck in a power cycle, where it turns on for a few seconds, then turns off and so on until the battery runs out. Most of them have been fine after replacing the motherboard but we've had a couple with the same motherboard issue again.

This is a 2nd generation Carbon X1. Do not buy it!
I have this laptop (with maxed our specs) and it's a terrible buy.

    • Soft function keys that are buggy as hell.
    • Non-standard keyboard layout that lots of people hate.
    • Prone to motherboard failure. I've had my board replaced once.
    • My SSD failed. The SSD is actually really good, I might have got a dud?
  • I paid about that (about $50 more if I recall) for an X1 over 3yrs ago and ended up with the i7 and 8gb.
I thought that the HDD was some non-standard X1 specific job?

    • The HDD is M.2 SATA.

  • We have hundreds of gen 2's and 3's. I wouldn't touch em, I once liked Lenovo, sturdy and solid laptops but their newer hardware is mediocre. What's the biggest let down is their customer service, bit of a hit and miss when it comes to them understanding you. The repairer is Unysis, who are average as well. We suppose to have next day support yet I've waited a week to get two gen 2's repaired.
