Samsonite 72 Hours 55cm Cabin Spinner $161.10 Delivered @ LuggageGear (1.5kg Cabin Bag)

651
TCLUGGAGE

Great cabin bag and ultra light with the convenience of being a spinner. Hard to beat this for $161 delivered, which is the cheapest I've ever seen it.

Make the most of your cheap flight cabin allowance! No point paying for a cheap cabin bag and finding out it weighs 3.5Kg. When your carry on allowance is 7Kg you don't want to use half of that up on the actual bag.

I've had this for a year now and 70+ flights so I can safely say it's a great bag, it has been through hell and dragged many kilometers. Only hiccup was a recent flight when I had to check it in as it was overweight. Wheel was damaged with a big gouge in the plastic and damage to the axle, bag still rolled, but wasn't perfect. I was able to buy a genuine replacement wheel assembly for $15 from a local Samsonite repair.

Found this code on a random website so you might want to use it before they realise and change it.

Best cabin bag. The large check in one is good too but it isn't as durable given the light weight material it's made out of.

    • +1

Agreed, I wouldn't get this style for a large checked in bag. No point when your checked in allowance is usually 20-30Kgs.

Cabin bags however, are all about weight and convenience. Which this does very well.

Just a warning - at 55x35x23cm dimensions, it doesn't meet Virgin Australia or Qantas carryon restrictions (48x34x23). Best check with your regular airlines, especially if they decide to make you check it in :(

And yes, we all know you can get away with overweight/oversize carryon (I do it a fair bit), but carriers like Jetstar and Tiger can be real pricks about it. YMMV.

    • +4

It meets Qantas. Details here: http://www.qantas.com.au/travel/airlines/carry-on-baggage/gl…
Only issue is the Qantas Dash-8 services, where they count it as "premium" luggage that you can collect immediately after disembarking.

Virgin, yes it's over size, as is just about all cabin baggage with their microscopic size restrictions. However they've never stopped me or anyone else with a bag this size. I think this is just because they haven't listed their ATR turboprop flights separately, these are the same deal as Qantas.

      • Thanks, lasttime I checked it was the same as Virgin (because they pinged me at Q).

      • never had an issue with similarly sized carry on on either

    • It does meet Qantas' carry on restrictions: 1 x 115cm (45in) bag (56cm (22in) + 36 cm (14in) + 23cm (9in) = 115cm (45in))

It does meet other budget airlines's restriction such as Jetstar and AirAsia:

      http://www.jetstar.com/au/en/planning-and-booking/baggage/ca…

    • Tiger's baggage size limit is H54 x W38 x D23cm. Only 1 cm larger in height, she'll be right yeh?

      • Just squish it into their unit to measure size I reckon.

        • +3

I like squishing things into peoples units.

5cm smaller, 0.4kg heavier but cheaper $150.66 (using the same code) includes delivery

      • Not a bad option for a 50cm bag. But I'd personally go for one of these in the same 72 Hours series. Same weight(1.5Kg) and only $150.30. Although these aren't spinners, which IMO add a lot of convenience.

        Samsonite 50cm Navy

EDIT: actually both of our suggestions will fall foul of a very strict interpretation of the pathetic virgin allowance. Max height is 48cm for virgin. Very few, if any, roller or spinner bags in that size.

        • This.

No one even makes 48cm or under bags. Virgin doesn't enforce it, plenty of people use the standard universal 55cm on Virgin flights.

        • You're right bargainerftw. I used this very bag for my last 4 trips last month and wasn't stopped.

Cheers CT! Wife and I have been struggling with $50 heavy cheapies for years so just got a couple of these.

Would love to see a thread on best cabin luggage

The trick is to wear your luggage. They won't ask you to put your 40kg jacket in the measuring unit.

      http://youtu.be/IScYc9altnU

      • To add to this some adults weigh 120Kg and others 50Kg. Airlines do not have a problem with that :). but luggage should not be over by even 100/200gms and they usually base this arguement on the name of safety but it has nothing to do with safety. If you pay more, you can carry more. Good example is, a business class passanger allowed to carry more of everything then a economy class passanger.

For this bag, I would say one of the few ones that offers wheels and yet so light weight.

        • That's my biggest gripe about air travel. Sometimes you get put next to someone who should really be allocated two seats. I've felt like asking for a contribution towards the 50% of my seat they used on the flight.

Fortunately has only been on shorter flights, but I'd be livid on a 13 hour with half the seat I paid for occupied by someone else.

        • ddaus, not sure if you are referring to check-in luggage or carry-on. For carry-on, the airlines say it's because their overhead storage can only handle a particular combined weight.

        • @griftr: griftr, I've been on flights where I was allowed to carry 10Kg due to business class and others were allowed to carry only 7. I was also allowed to carry an extra piece as hand luggage (i.e. SLR Cam backpack) apart from the laptop business bag, which economy passengers were not. All in carry on.

Most of the time it descends into comments about wearing 10 pairs of underpants, three jackets, 5 shirts and then passing out through heat exhaustion. Others claim that plastic bags are a great option. Or a backpack.

I think this bag is the best right now, given its function and how much it weighs. If you're doing a bit of travelling and transiting then it's very handy to have a spinner.

Good Timing OP, Heading overseas for Xmas and was looking for some carry one luggage, these are rated highly

  • +1

Bought a similar model from COTD a few months back, extremely lightweight!

  • Thanks OP, got myself the navy!

  • Anyone know if it's expandable?

  • -1

Pretty sure that standard cabin sizes only go up to 48cm.. This is the one size up from that and meant for the luggage compartment - not the passenger stow.

    • +1

Not sure what you're basing that on. Only carrier I know who only goes to 48cm is Virgin. There are very few bags under 48cm.

Here are some of the airline carry on policies

      AirAsia
      Jetstar
      Qantas
      Tiger

Good spotting on the deal, but I'd give these bags a MASSIVE wide berth. You may as well chuck your luggage in a plastic bag:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KbL4MvIRmRc

    • Why is this relevant for a carry on?

      • +2

Yes not a deal breaker imo if you're using it for its intended purpose - ie. carry on luggage.

    • +2

Since most people would use this as a carry on, is this really an issue?

You could say the same about most other bags being opened with a ballpoint pen through the zip.

      • By "these bags" I'm referring to the 72 hour range.

At least with a ballpoint pen, you know the bag has been tampered with - here you can open and close a bag WITH A FINGER, bypassing the TSA approved lock with no apparent entry.

The carry on bag mightn't be a security issue, but if that's the level of engineering they are putting into the bigger bags, I'd balk at paying $150+ for anything in the range.

Just sharing info with people so they may make an informed purchase.

        • +1

These don't have that built in pissy lock, i think that's only the larger sizes. Despite the pictures showing that they do. The 55cm comes with looped zippers and a combo lock similar to this http://slimages.macysassets.com/is/image/MCY/products/0/opti…

Probably just as easy to crack though. or cut with ease using some pliers. Then again it's soft luggage, a knife will do the job too. or even un-stitching the zippers. These problems are universal with most luggage.

I guess the point of the lock is to make it hard for someone to get into your stuff while you're sleeping or while it's briefly out of sight. This does the job just fine.

    • +1

I have the large 72 hour bag and this does NOT happen. No ones forcing you to use the TSA lock anyway and some people prefer not to use them.

  • -3

Last time I purchased from LuggageGear they did a bait and switch.

    • Do you have any more info?

    • That would suck. I'm not associated with them, just found the deal. What did they try to do? how long ago was it?

    • +1

This deal isn't bait n switch.
You have to be quick, as soon as a deal hits OzBargain it can be gone in minutes.
      If you snooze, you loose.

    • Don't know how things went awry for you but I purchased this very bag from LuggageGear who did a pricematch -5% for me. I think I got it for under $150.

  • +1

Thanks for this. It is a great cabin bag, getting my second one now.

  • Thanks OP, was looking at one for a long, long time.

  • Thanks Op. Bought 2. just in time to replace our aging cabin bags which have missing wheels and broken handles!

  • +1

Great bag. I have carried it on to Virgin and Jetstar numerous times with no issues with size.

One thing I'd mention is that the retractable handle doesn't feel the sturdiest when rolling. A minor issue that I hardly notice, and I'm sure that's part of the reason how they could get it down to 1.5kg

I bought mine at the start of the year for $150 from http://www.sweeneyluggage.com.au. It said the usual 40% off on their website at the time, but in store I was told it was actually 50% off - if you call them up they may offer the same this time.

    • +1

Agreed. It is a little flimsy and can make the bag difficult to track properly when rolling, until you get the hang of it. Price you pay for the weight I guess.

I'd love one of these, but I can't justify the spend. Cheapest I've ever seen is $400. I'll be watching in the sales but might a long shot as its a new model.

Great bag, used one for recent trip in Europe, no problem so far.

Edit: disregard this, it wasn't clear that there was a 10% discount via the other site.

    Price now showing as $179.00.

My two Spinners arrived yesterday so managed to have a good look at them last night. About as perfect as you could expect and at a great price. Cheers OP!

… and a review now that we're back from our trip:

10/10 - Excellent! Stupidly lightweight, loads of room inside, super-easy to wheel around, handle may seem flimsy at first inspection but is strong & reliable. Cannot fault these. Thanks again CT, these definitely improve our overall travelling experience.

      • No worries glad you enjoy. I love mine. The weight is so low and it still works really well. Mine is usually lugging around 12-15ks with my laptop bag on top of it.

Was checking these again to see if they dropped in the new year. Looks like this is still the price winner.

But I'm sorely tempted by the samsonite lite cube now. $330 with this code.

Unrelated. Have been re-enjoying my Reindeer Selection and Belle and Sebastian lately. Any other recommendations?

        • +1

Ha, nice. I recommend playing some David Bowie purely as a tribute to todays sad news but other than that some Decemberists always appear on our playlists to keep us going :) Maybe even some Elbow thrown in for good measure.

        • @SteveAndBelle: Yes, sad news indeed. May he RIP. Space Oddity was the first ever song I remember hearing as a kid. Father had the album.

Thanks for the Decemberists, will check them out.

  • I can't see $161.10, when the 10% is applied it comes up to $177.66

    • +1

      Deal is over sadly.

IMO these are still great at $177.66

  • Thanks CT - Just went to buy one and being female chose the red option + 10% off with code must be the biggest bargain if you don't mind red . Very happy <$140 delivered !!

Received my Navy one today, actually it is 1.7kg not 1.5kg. I could guess that because I was at Myer during the weekend, the 48 one has a large tag of 1.5, and it can't be the same as the 55 one. But anyway happy with mine.

    • I wondered this so I put mine on the scales and it came in at 1.6kgs.

The replacement wheel assembly I mentioned in the post might have something to do with it. They look a bit bigger than the original wheels.
