The dewalt pack is very cheap quality and has tiny batteries.

The AEG also lacks a hammer setting which sucks as the previous kit was a hammer drill.

The Milwaukee will be the best built and best performing kit.

OP if you're not a tradie consider the $259 Ryobi combo at Bunnings at the moment. $259 for the drill driver, 2 x 2.5ah batteries, impact and drill set.
Ryobi is owned and made in the same factory as the Milwaukee and AEG so it gets all their older technology (not a bad thing). But at least future tool purchases will be cheap.

    • I'm now tossing up between the Ryobi and the Milwaukee.

I'm not a tradie, so there is appeal in being able to easily get things like hedge trimmers.

      • The Milwaukee will be better quality but the Ryobi will mean you can acquire future tolls cheap.

The one plus stuff is good quality for the price.

        • Appreciate the input. The reading I've done on the Ryobi garden tools suggest they aren't that spectacular. (Mower and line trimmer mostly). In particular everything I saw on the mower suggested the batteries went down hill pretty quickly.

So I'm thinking I'll go the Milwaukee.

The last thing I'm wondering is whether the Milwaukee is significantly better than the Makita. The advantage for the Makita being I can drive 5 minutes and pick it up from Bunnings.

        • @ProggerPete:

Can't speak for the garden tools but I'm speaking simply about the power tools. Ryobi, AEG and Milwaukee all are made in the same factory and the technology eventually all trickles down to Ryobi so the battery technology is pretty good.

If you just want a good tool go for the Milwaukee but if you're planing on expanding to other tools and don't want to spend heaps then go for the Ryobi. The tools are very good quality for the price.

        • @ProggerPete: I used to have a battery powered line trimmer and it wasnt any good compared to the petrol version I now own. I cant recall the brand as it was quite some time ago. I own a ryobi one drill, angle grinder, recipricating saw, circular saw, hedge trimmer, blower, chainsaw, and am very happy with all of them! I am not a tradie, but i do like to build 'stuff' and cut 'stuff'.

        • @bradn:I've got the Ryobi line trimmer, 18v. While it is not as powerful as a petrol alternative it is certainly adequate for my typical suburban block. A single 4ah battery used to do my edges, hedge with hedge trimmer and also usually had enough power left to run the blower to clear the driveway and footpath too. Again, all not as powerful as petrol, but definitely more convenient.

  • got makita brushless set from sydney tools for $400 with 2X 4A batteries and fast charger.

    • The brushless sets would be attractive if I had an apprentice card for the cashback.

Get the one my neighbor bought. process as follows-

Wake up Sunday morning 7am, wake pit bull terrier and drag it for a walk with the missus.

    Discuss power tools.

Go to Bunnings and support the locals by buying power tools at Bunnings. Drag the missus back to the ute.

Use power tools on Sunday morning every weekend for 8 weeks and talk in riddles.

  • Think about other tools you might want too, and the amount of work it will do. Pick the brand that has what you want.

I got a Ryobi drill years ago, been happy with it and have added a plethora of other tools to my kit, including the line trimmer, hedger and chainsaw. The 1.4ah battery I have is fine for drilling work, good balance of power, life and weight. Th 4ah is better for the more power hungry tools, and a little heavier, but not much, for the drill.

  • I've been very happy with my Ryobi gear. Lots of different tools available in the family, and they are cheap.

  • AEG - 6 year warranty - cant go wrong. PLus I dont think they've ever changed their battery

  • Why no love for Makita? I thought Makita was supposed to be the best?

  • i got a AEG 3 pack combo hammer drill, impact driver and radio 2, 2.0 ah battery
