Just Moved House And Cant Get Broadband So Need 4G/3G/Mobile Broadband, Use Approx 30GB mth, cheaper the better. Options?!

I've just moved into a new place and can't get ADSL broadband as theres no phone line, so I need the 4G/3G/Mobile Broadband expensive stuff. Use about 30GB a month. What are my options?? These are the ones I've come up with so far:

Also it looks like Vodafone and Virgin are on the Optus network, if I use my Optus locked 3G mobile broadband device I already have and get their BYO modem option (12GB @ $40 mth to mth) will it work in my Optus device??

Much questions…

UPDATE: Ok so I ended up getting a 20GB/$80 a month deal on a 12 month contract with Optus. Deal is 2x Optus 10GB/$40 a month which includes unlimited calls, texts, 13 no's, etc. Am putting one sim in my phone (porting no) to take advantage of the unlimited calls and the other sim goes in my mobile broadband device. Its this deal - http://www.optus.com.au/shop/mobilephones/SimBYO?SID=con:pos… Seems like a pretty good deal. Have good speeds etc, so think Im happy. Also Id really like to thank everyone for all their help etc re this holy shit I cant get ADSL broadband moment. It was horrible but with OzBargain friends you can succeed lol. Thanks heaps guys :D

That's a downside with super fast 4G, on my Telstra connection I opened steam and didn't notice it auto started downloading a large game update (like a 4GB 'Payday 2' update) and it was almost done by the time I noticed in minutes, entire monthly 4G quota gone just like that.

      • LoL had the same problem last few weeks ago 6G gone few hours from steam

If u cannot get a phone line, telstra have a USO(Universal Service Obligation) to provide you with a telephone service. See: https://www.telstra.com.au/consumer-advice/customer-service/…
If they are unable to do so, they will provide you with a 3G service & charge u as if u had a fixed service.
    You're welcome.

    • wow i didnt know this was a thing

    • Isn't that for voice (i.e. standard telephone service) only?

  • Op is gone.
Hes stopped replying and wont explain why he cant get a phone line.
    Im so butthurt right now.

  • I'm with Optus home wireless broadband, as mentioned by JordanM & zealmax. Started 10 Nov & only used 16.4 GB so far (don't use video & high bandwith stuff until I can establish usage patterns staying within the 50GB).

I am very pleased with the package! Optus even offers extra benefits if you have a mobile account with them.

    Cheers Dennis

How good is ping and speed on mobile broadband ? as OP mentioned gaming.

I have used Vodafone and Virgin and they were crap, never got anywhere near advertised speeds, most of time very slow and long ping times.

The Optus home wireless looks great $70 for 50GB.

    • Ok thanks Adhoc. I was worried about their speeds. Think I kind of want to stick with Optus as their service is pretty good. Have checked the home wireless option and it says it doesnt cover my address. Maybe Ill just email them tho re my options with their services and re the home wireless mention that Im just out of their coverage area and see what they say. Worth a try. Thanks heaps :)

      • dont stick with optus if they cant provide a decent deal.
        No telco rewards loyalty.

The best advice i can give you is to input your details on the Broadband service locator.

    https://programs.communications.gov.au/NBNBSL/

Obviously you do not have NBN available nor will you be eligible for NSS service. However, by inputting your details you can get a picture of what services may be available at the premise. Of which you can then proceed to enquire service availability with the listed commercial providers. If you are in range of wimax type services such as the aforementioned clear networks and others you can chase it up with them.

    Best of luck

  • Ok just did a live chat with Optus and they said they could do their $75 mth for 10GB deal half price for 6 months, so he said he could give it to me for $35 a month for 10GB and if I wanted 20GB to just get x2 this deal. Ahhh so thinking thinking options, I dunno. Will think about it = everything so expensive :/

Edit: And thats on a month to month and can leave at any time

    • Ok decided Id get this deal but the second guy I spoke to doesnt seem to want to give it to me and is trying to talk me into an $80 deal 10GB on my new phone plan Ill have to get with them, but I used my Amaysim data and when you run out of it it uses your prepaid credit or in this case Ill just run up a big bill with them when I run out of the 10GB data on the mobile plan, so anyway cos of this would prefer a mobile broadband plan. So anyway 10GB on the new Optus mobile plan for $40 and 10GB for $40 on a mobile broadband plan. Anyway he really only wanted to give me this, not the previous deal offered by a different guy from Optus when I contacted them earlier. Hes ringing me back supposedly. Anyway wont take this deal. Ahh geez whatever

I feel for you. I'd suggest try using the 4G connection on prepaid first before committing to a contract.
Voda, Optus and Telstra all have offers so u can give them a go. Of all the MNVOs, Amaysim has a great deal as well (but using Optus network…) Churn, churn and churn to get the best offers if don't know who to commit with first…

I pay $150 for 25gb with telsta and $10 per gb extra, I got a new ipad with the contract which I use to as my wifi. No issues at all always fast and I am in a rural area picking up 4G signals.

For those suggesting "just getting a phone line", it may not actually allow any further choice of options… My folks have two phone lines, and are not able to get any sort of internet other than mobile broadband… And they're only 18km's from the nearest town and 3-5km's from the nearest exchange (with probably less than 20-30 other custoner connections between them and the exchange.

  • try Belong, they do the line install too if they need, going by comments previouly on OzB. https://www.belong.com.au/.

Do I need a phone line to get Belong ADSL?

Yes - If you don’t already have a phone line on the Telstra Network (or don’t have a phone service at all), you can sign up to our Belong ADSL2+ Bundle (with a limited phone service) and we will organise a phone line connection for you.

so 100gig is 70 month total, unlimited calls included. 500gig is $10 more.

Unless you are not allowed to have a line.

    • Pretty sure they won't run an ADSL connection all the way from the exchange, if there are no pits/telephone lines at all. Usually it means they will install the line from the pole/pit to the house, but if there's no actual ADSL coverage going past his house, he's out of luck.

By that logic, if I was a farmer in the middle of nowhere, I could ask them to run me a cable 300km? ;)

      • I just read they dont have a phone line, didnt read that they are too far from an exchange.

        • I assume if there was a phone line going past their house, any ISP (or at least Telstra) could run a cable to the building.

        • @brezzo:
But Telstra charge $100s and sign you up for 2 years, reading whirlpool/OzB posts Belong just do it. I dont know any other ISP that will install a line that doesn't exist.

        • @PVA: iiNet installed my VDSL to the pole for no charge, it would have been $70 if I wasn't on contract (I think, can't remember). It's not that big of a deal, really, but I think it's not an option for the OP since he has been told by various ISPs that he's not in a coverage area.

    • We got big internet issuze in the bush, I got a phone line but I always get the same response when I try to get ADSL

"We're currently unable to provide services at your address……..sucker" (Ok, I added the sucker, but when I moved into the house, Australia still had an NBN plan. Rather than…….err nothing?…..wait, let's use these old copper cables…….)

  • I just moved to a new house, and there is no internet too. Telstra offered me a so-called "interim" service. Basically, they offered me a phone number that will forward calls to my mobile phone and a 4G wifi pocket (completely free). I just need to recharge the data until I got the internet at my home. Once my postpaid service is activated, the amount that I have recharged on the prepaid will be refunded on my postpaid bill.

I suggest you to contact Telstra if they can offer the interim service for you.

  • Ok so I bought an Optus 4G starter pack that included a 4G device. Ahhh 4G device doesnt work cant get reception. 3G works ok here tho. Anyway what are my options can I just take it back to Officeworks whinging that I cant get reception and theyll give me my money back or do I try and sell it on ebay ORR do I throw it on the ground and jump up and down on it yelling I hate you Optus you totally suck dick

    • +5

One option you have is to respond WHY SPECIFICALLY YOU CAN'T YOU GET A LANDLINE? If you ask Telstra to install one, what is their reply? A few people asked, but you never explained that.

      • -2

Just didnt want to go into personal details too much. Thanks for everyones help tho :D

        • +2

No need to go into "personal details" at all. No need to disclose ANYTHING specifically related to your person, or to your street address. You could answer this question (which many asked) and still be completely private. But… it is your show, you play it any way you like.

    • can you log into the device (eg 10.1.1.1) and configure/force it for 3G only?

    • Lol all sorted its working now :D

  • +4

Oi OP, mate can you respond to the significant number of posters asking you why you can't get a phone line? Not sure why you're being so cagey about this.

There are a number of options apart from mobile 3g/4g that may be more cost effective (e.g. cable/fiber).

  • seems like OP only wants Optus and no other option.

  • +1

Have you looked at buying an old $2 days unlimited SIM off gumtree or eBay. Cost might work for you in the long run.

    Saw one recently for $240.

    • how reliable are these…first I have heard and would be perfect for me

      • +1

        Optus reliable.

It's A plan you can't get now, but existing customers are still on it.

  • So I'm guessing you're renting?

Find out if there was ever a phone line. If there was Telstra will probably connect it and then you can get ADSL.

Otherwise have you checked if you can get the NBN? or have cable internet installed?

Even if there is an existing foxtel point you are pretty much set.

    • Indeed, a lot of guessing here, because the OP decided to refuse any comments on direct question WHY he can not get landline. Waste of time to respond, I would say.

  • Also it looks like Vodafone and Virgin are on the Optus network,

Vodafone does not use the Optus network?
It roams on to Optus 3G only when Voda have no towers and optus do.. same goes for optus on Voda towers.

They also have a $140 plan which gives you 50GB a month
