    Must resist!

Also consider the Tamron 24-70 2.8… A lot cheaper and some say a better lens.

You might need a 5K camera body to fit this lens.

5k? It works perfectly it with a 6D

but the average D is only 5.5

    • You might need a 5K camera body to fit this lens

Well. I am in luck. I have 0.55K camera I.e. 550D and this would fit.

    • Interesting enough, if you were going to spend "a lot" on one item, you're better off spending it on the lens!

A $500 camera with $2000 lens does much better than a $2000 camera with $500 lens - also lenses don't really go out of date.

  • Is a lens like this really worth the cash? Would Joe Average notice the difference?

Is a lens like this really worth the cash?

If you own a Canon camera and want a very high quality lens in this zoom range and constant aperture, you have but a tiny handful of options. Canon's build quality (especially in their L range) is right at the top. If you use this for work hopefully you should be able to make this money back in a short span of time, and if you're a serious hobbyist and devoted into the Canon ecosystem there's really no other option (in a good kind of way).

Would Joe Average notice the difference?

Doubt it. Average Joe looks at a photo as a whole, when done correctly, all the composition/sharpness/rendition of colour/focus/etc that photographers obsess over should be completely transparent, one would just think it's a good photo. A side by side of say a kit lens and this one then most definitely, but when would that ever happen.

      • The Tamron is an excellent alternative - I'm using it and am very happy with it.

        • I'm sure it is, that's what I was referring to with the tiny handful of options, there's the Sigma, then it's down to few over the top manual only or adapt other mounts. Personally still using the Mark I and beyond thrilled with it.

  • this lens is amazing, used it a couple times and the detail is incredible
