My Very First Traffic Offence - Red Light (VIC)

Long time lurker, first time poster -

I ran a red light, not but much, but I definitely did. I am certain the flash went off, felt like a critical hit to the bank account.
It was around 5am this morning and no-one was around so I foolishly pushed my luck on a yellow light.

Anyhow, this is my first offence I've ever had on my licence (including parking fines) which I've held for over 8 years.

Is there any chance I can write to them to try and get off/reduce the fine? What would I say?

I remember there was a sort of 'template letter' that a few of my mates sent in to VicRoads/the cops the first time they received a speeding fine to get off with just a warning. Is a red light offence worse than speeding?
Would you let me off the hook?

Thanks for your time

  • They take crossing a red light seriously, the chance of getting off is 1-2%. You really need an emergency.

If you were speeding under 10kms and you word your response right, you have a high chance (50%) of getting off, I think you can do this once every year or two.

Two offenses of the same nature in that year, 0% if you write in to get off. Unless it's an emergency.

But always write in, you lose nothing.

  • Red light offences aren't provisioned for to be waived as a 'first time offence', but you can try and apply.

    How fast were you going?
It's possible you triggered the speed camera but not the red light?

You won't get any leniency on a red light. It's orange for a good three seconds at least. And the camera won't get you unless it is already red before you've entered the intersection.

  • I remember reading that the cameras will not snap a photo until one point five seconds after the light turns red so as to avoid wrongly fining people who run amber lights. But that could have been NSW not Vic.

  • Similar happened to me at an intersection (Camera facing opposite to me, I didn't know cameras can still pick up opposite lane traffic). I did also get two flashes, the second flash wouldn't get my car though. I'm still waiting for my fine to come through. Happened on 19/10/15….just waiting and waiting….everyday.. Will be my first fine as well.

Many speeding fines have come through since then (run a hire car company through same address) which aren't mine.

    • Are you sure cameras can pick up from the opposite lane? I haven't come across one that does. May be it snapped someone else?

      • Apparently it can if your in the lane closer to the camera. So if the camera is sitting on the right, you need to be in the right lane instead of the left lane to detect you. Talking about opposite lane.

Maybe it did snap someone else. There was someone slightly over the line in front of the camera when it did snap. However I doubt that's enough.

There is a Facebook page called getting out of fines, rego, fees, tolls and rates

  • If the ticket comes, you're stuck with it.
