Costco Petrol - What are your thoughts ?

Hey guys,

Just wanting to gather your thoughts on the Costco Petrol since they've opened for a while now.

Their prices are considerably cheaper than the
other servos, but can anyone comment of the quality?

I usually stay away from smaller servos because I'm unsure of their petrol quality. But my past few fill ups have been at Costco purely based on the saving I get on each tank.

Would love to hear what you guys think.

Thanks

My car uses 95 petrol which they don't have, only 98. My thoughts are that if you use the Woolworths egift cards from cash rewards which give you 5% off, the savings are better.

      You can use 98…
95 is just the minimum you need to use.

except 98 is much more expensive than 95 which negates most of the savings you get from Costco petrol.

ive noticed all the servos around the Costco petrol here in Adelaide maintain more or less the same prices. I won't be renewing my Costco membership at the end of the year.

        • Might be because I haven't been enough times, but I the few times I have been the prices stayed the same.
So there was a decent saving there as the prices at the other servos weren't in the 'low' range.
          I was getting '98 for $124'ish/L.

In Canberra at least the Costco 98 is typically 10c/l cheaper than my local's 95.

        • @Hello Stranger: Sorry, '98 being around the $1.24 mark per liter.

  • I fill up at Costco, BP, Shell and Independents.

My car has yet to explode, so I'm going to fill up based on price until that changes.

    • +1

I'm the same except for the independants. Think it's all in my head though..

    • Filled up in one of the independents. Turned out fuel quality was average.

It was a nightmare to deal with the Owners for compensation through fair trading. My advice, stick with the big names or suffer like I did.

      • Bro, did you seriously just reply to a 19 month old comment?
        You're a madman.

I've also read books that have been written over 20 years ago. The lessons remain the same.

        • Yet the comment is still useful.

(yes I know I did a necro as well)

Filled up at Moorabbin over the weekend. Was roughly the same price with a coles/woolies 4c voucher. Fuel is provided by BP

    • +6

Fuel is sourced from Mobil, as per their website.

    • I go to Moorabbin as well. I might need to pay more attention to the prices in the area. Feels like I'm saving more, haha.

  • i fill up at nothlakes when i'm over that side of town (come on costco.. open up in the west of brisbane.. please) and have had no issues at all

Petrol is petrol, don't buy the marketing hype that BP or Shells premium stuff is better. We don't have different oil refineries in Australia.

The higher performance cars that require higher octanes, are the reason to use the premium stuff. Otherwise the difference is barely 1% but the price is more than 1% difference. If you want the cleaning feature then do it occasionally but there are other cheaper cleaners.

In some populated areas you might have real choice, otherwise the fuel is the same, they just use a different distributor company.

If you're super fussy about your car then fill up in the mornings when it's coolest (most dense) and less chance of humidity/water, but that's rare because of standards and designs of underground tanks now.

Costco petrol is fine. Take advantage of the lower price.

Searching for better petrol is somewhat similar to searching for better mars bar in all grocery stores nearby.

    • We don't have different oil refineries in Australia.

      Wikipedia begs to differ

      • Process the crude the same. Only one in Perth. My point was and is petrol is petrol. If you want to kid yourself that you're getting some special formula from your favourite little local fill up spot, then that's your delusion.

Otherwise, don't waste my time with nonsense. Thanks.

        • If you want to kid yourself that you're getting some special from your favourite little local fill up spot, then that's your delusion.

Me? Not at all. I fill up using the cheapest possible method.

I understand your point and to a large degree agree with your view, however I don't like incorrect statements being tossed around which other readers may unknowingly take as factual. Just trying to make sure all sides of a discussion are well-informed.

    • Might be all in my head / driving style but I feel like I get better economy out of 95 than 98 in my car (bf xr8). I don't notice a performance difference between 95-100 octane either.

Thanks for that. I never knew.

Costco source their fuel from Mobil and apparently have an additive they put in that improves the fuel in some way. They use the additive all over the world in their stations and reckon it is better than anyone else's. Then again, every brand says that.

    • +2

      Exactly. It's BS marketing.

  • I saved 12C per litre at the Moorabbin store compared to the other stations around (they may have dropped their prices since as well, haven't checked again). Fuel is fuel, forget the marketing nonsense.

  • do they sell LPG?

    • The local one to me (Moorabbin) doesn't, only unleaded, premium unleaded and diesel. Not sure about the others.

  • We always fill up at Moorabbin Costo - Cars have not blown up.

  • I have been going to Costco ever since it opened and believe that I've been getting cheap petrol. I paid $1.36.7Litre today for Premium petrol (Unleaded). On the way home I saw it for $1.23.9L so I checked our area prices and one service station is selling it for $1.09.7Litre. What the Heck????
I found another receipt for $1.36Litre on the 7th November.
I have always bought the premium which is the pump on the far left so I haven't used the wrong pump.
I have always just gone blindly to Costco assuming they are always cheaper than everywhere else

  • 80% of Australia's fuel comes from Singapore.

There is also 18 billion worth of mineral fuels, oils, distillation products imported from Indonesia.

Would I put that in my common rail diesel? No bloody chance.
