looking for 500GB - 1TB, I prefer USB powered but the 1TB in usb is too expensive- $300.

3.5" = power supply
2.5 = power from usb
Well, most of the 3.5" aren't USB powered, and most of the 2.5" one's are 500gb or under. So from that point of view it's no surprise that a USB powered 1TB model is around $300.
Sometimes the 500GB portable models can be on sale for $100, but the next best at the moment this might be this Seagate at $129:

Rip off! You can get them for $169 at MSY and then 5% off that again at office works…
Officeworkd doesn't pricematch MSY as it's classed as a wholesaler not a shop.
Sorry to tell you that your local officeworks store sucks then. My local officeworks beats ANY price that is in Australia and if it is an internet company then they add the delivery fee to the price and if it is still cheaper, they beat that by 5%…
Because MSY is not far from where I live then they are more than happy to beat there price by 5%…

You can do much cheaper than that… MSY have the 3.5 external IOMEGA Prestige 1TB for $109.. You then go to your local office works and they will beat that by 5%… so comes down to about $104… Or if officeworks don't have the IOMEGA in stock, (like my local office works didn't) they should have the Seagate 1TB in stock and that is $125 at MSY so you can get 5% off that at Officeworks….
For the 2.5 500GB they are pretty much the same price, so depending on what you prefer (the 3.5 or 2.5) you can get them pretty cheap…
