Most suitable GPU's for 1440p gaming?

Hi all,

Looking to get some advice as I have just recently upgraded my monitor to the Asus MG279Q and my XFX HD7970 has conveniently just died.
Black Friday sales are around the corner so I was wondering if anyone could recommend some replacement GPU's which would be most suitable for me.
As my monitor is FreeSync ready, it seems I am locked to AMD cards and the MSI R9 390 seems to be popular.

Current system specs are

i5 4570
16gb ram
asus z87-plus mb
750w psu

Mainly playing BF4 on it but will be looking into more AAA games once I have the card sorted.

Cheers!

  • I'd just go for the gtx 970 or 980 depending on your budget

Definitely need to add your budget as there can be pretty big gaps in high-end cards (eg. 980 -> 980ti).

    • Yeah I was set on getting a 980 but the performance gap between that and the 980ti was similar to the gap between the card I was upgrading from and the 980. So for ~$200 extra of course I got the 980ti.

  • Minimum of the R9 390, whether the 390x is worth it with its decreased value is probably entirely up to you. i have an R9 290 and it's still a bit of a bitch running AAA titles on 60fps at highish settings. I'd suggest the MSI and Sapphire 390's as they seem to be the best OCers and very good coolers.

Might want to check out a deal i posted previously for a relatively cheap fury, the only qualm I have with going with the fury is the lack of vram which some benchmarks have shown to have a negative effect on frame times at higher resolution (4k, maybe 1440p) in comparison to the 980ti or cards with more vram.

  • At 1440p you would want gtx 970 or an r9 390 minimum, check newegg for graphics cards, r9 fury selling for <$750 apparently

  • Grab a watercooled fury.

  • I recommend against a gtx970 and would steer you towards a 980 or 980ti or amd equiv

You haven't really said what your budget is, but the 390 is probably your best bet in terms of bang-for-buck on the AMD side. If you go any lower, you probably won't be terribly happy with the performance and if you go any higher, you're not getting as much bang-for-buck.

That said, another alternative is to have a look at a used 290 or 290X on Gumtree. Given that you can find a used R9 290 for less than $300 these days, it might make sense to get two of them. You can probably get this in at under $550 easily. If you have the power to run them and the cooling required, this will simply be the best bang-for-buck you can find and it'll run any game at decent fps in 1440p with no problems.

  • In terms of a budget, I guess I was looking towards more the direction of the 390 and 390x and the comparative price per dollar. I did have a quick look at the Sapphire Fury that @cathole recommended and although that didn't look too bad, paying almost $300 more for about 8-10 more FPS @ 1440p on BF4 seemed unrealistic. The general consensus seemed to be that the 390 was the best value deal right now.

The Black Friday sales on Newegg have started early so I decided to pull the trigger as the card was on sale at $418AUD + shipping.

Hope I made the right choice.

    • Just keep in mind that the 390 is basically a 290 with some more memory that you generally don't need. If you run it at 1440p you are going to get lag in a lot of games at higher or ultra details.

It really depends what you are playing.

I think a Fury X or nvidia equivalent is the best option here.

      • Sure, I agree, a Fury X would have the ideal option but at prices the way they are now it was just way over what I was looking to spend.

Going through quite a few benchmarks, I found that the 390 seemed to have decent FPS on 1440p on BF4 with Ultra settings considering the price it goes for.

        Wouldn't have minded a Sapphire Fury X though :C

Keep in mind that Battlefield 4 is a game that runs very well. All the newer games these days run a lot worse.

As long as you are aware that the 390 will struggle at the higher graphics in newer games in 1440p then you won't have to worry.

  • Out of interest what made you go with that Montior, i'm kind of in the same situation as you & all this fancy new monitor tech confuses me I've around $1000 for monitor & gpu, hoping to pick up some decent 2nd bargains

I went with the MG279Q because from the research I went through, it ticked all the boxes I was after in a monitor. 1440p, 144hz, an IPS panel and FreeSync enabled. I usually hang onto monitors for quite a few number of years and thought it would be better to spend big now rather than spend little and replace sooner.

  • Look for a 980 Ti. I'm in the same situation as you and this is what i'm aiming to grab this weekend.

A 970 wont cut it. Need to jump to a 980 or 980 Ti. I'm justifying the extra money for the Ti for future proofing and better value for money for 4K/1440p gaming.
