Is Black Friday a Thing in Australia?

Do Australian stores (esp. computer) "observe" Black Friday?

Or maybe just Australian outlets of US firms (eg Dell, Microsoft)?

(The existing thread on BF is concerned with importing things from US, which I'm not wanting to do)

This is part of Black Friday / Cyber Monday deals for 2015

We don't have Black Friday, we have Boxing Day instead.

In Australia the term "Black" before the day of the week is usually associated with a bushfire.

    • Flaming deals?

  • No official event here, but it would not stop retailers trying to create sales just before Christmas. Moreover as consumers we are still going to benefit from all the sales from Amazon and Newegg, for the products they deliver to Australia at least.

  • Will probably be a Click Frenzy thing.

  • Not yet, but we probably will eventually, much like Halloween.

      What's wrong with Halloween?

it's a thing in France (Paris).

  • Australians truly are being charged a lazy tax by big companies. Just had a look at the BesyBuy Black Friday sale for Apple - MacBook® Pro - Intel Core i5 - 13.3" being sold for US$899 (save $200 - which no doubt is due to it being an older model and has HD instead of SSD)[approx. $1250 AUD]. Same MacBook on Dick Smith $1529.10 (doesn't even get 10% off Mac special). Ripped off big time.

I honestly found it inappropriate for Australian companies or advertising to Australia the term Black Friday.

Its linked to bushfires. Like Black Saturday is the recent one, and Ash Wednesday in 83

I see it the same as an Australian company using the term "9/11 sale extravaganza" within the US. It just wouldn't happen.

I am not offended by it, but just seems it wasn't through through properly first and is just another reason to spend money.
