Microsoft's Clickfrenzy is live. I've been waiting for a deal on the Surface 3 for a while. This is definitely the best I've seen, as if you are getting a Surface…chances are you are getting the Typecover too (typically $179, can be found a little cheaper if looking).
Cashrewards gives 4% cashback as well on Surfaces, which would knock things down to ~$671 after returns, delivered.

Surface 3 is the same x86 version (not ARM) so it can run all desktop apps. The reason it's not called Pro is because it has a lower powered processor.
This model DOSE have full Windows 10.
The problem however, is it feels SLOW.

I got the same model. If you use any desktop PC (Pentium to Core i), you will notice a huge difference in regards to the performance (ie: UI response and browser experience). This makes me naturally want to avoid using the device if I don't have to. Also I feel the S3 was noticeably snappy when it was on win8.1.
@claud0902: yeah I've got a desktop with an i5 that I use as well, that's obviously quicker but also cost more
The money s3 model we invested($900+ inc cover) can definitely build you a decent desktop without a dedicated graphic card. So I guess the problem here is not about the cost. The s3 offers great portability for sure. But I am just a bit regret and think I should have invested more or waited longer for a portable windows device with a bit faster processor. (sp4 and skylake core m 2 in 1s for example)

The typecovers for every Surface/Surface Pro device is essentially a 'must have'. I go to uni and these have stormed the place, replacing all the Macbooks that used to be everywhere. I dont know a single person who has a Surface device and doesnt own the typecover.
the SP3 typecover is lousy as though, the keys feel cheap and plasticky and typing feels very strained… ordered an aftermarket one off ebay (the only one I can find) so hope that goes better
is it similar in feel to the S3 type cover? which aftermarket one did you get btw? I assume itl connect over Bluetooth instead

Still haven't received yet so they jury's still out, but I'm guessing it's better than the MS one (admittedly a low bar).
Also have a MBA and use my SP3 80-90% of the time for everything except prolonged typing… too bad the keyboard sucks, everything else is great

I spent $70 on a logitech type cover for my Tab S 10.5…something by Logitech for the Syrface would be in the same ball-park (close to $200) judging by the prices for the iPad Air keyboard cases.

This one included keyboard and stylus pen. 4 GB of RAM instead of 2 GB with 64 GB SDD. A stronger Intel processor with better gpu capability. However the camera is not as good as this. Again cheaper.
Don't forget, SSD. Cherry Trail still uses eMMC. SSD would be faster.
Also, n-trig tech on Surface Pro 3 in my opinion is worse than Wacom EMS tech used in Surface Pro 1 (which is the one used on Cube i7 Stylus as well).
You pay the premium for Surface 3, basically. Baytrail tablets were half the price of this (though Baytrail was subsidised by Intel) and the improvement on Baytrail to Cherry Trail isn't as massive as the price difference. So Surface 3 isn't a bang for the buck type of the device. Not to mention, Core M on Cube i7 Stylus is around 1.5 times better than Cherry Trail used on Surface 3 (from benchmark scores, i.e. geekbench I think it was?)
That said, MS is always pleasant to deal with for support whereas Chinese vendors are… not.
Other than possiblty performance (depends whether you find Cherry Trail adequate) and price (i.e. Tech support, build quality, etc etc), Surface 3 probably is a good choice. Whether it worth paying around double the price (I've seen i7 Stylus going at around $400~$500 AUD), that depends on person imo.
But buying a well known brand also gives the buyer peace of mind. This might sound a bit extreme, how many times have i heard china brands explode because they dont go through the strict tests big companies go through.
Let's face it. Chinese OEMs generally (see that word?) produce trash, and there's no other way to say it.
I avoid trash because I can't afford it. Buying what you know to be garbage and then either wasting time on it and/or having to re-buy what you initially should've.

That's why if you want / need to buy something like this, you need to read reviews to determine if it's junk from the outset.
Though reviews will never tell you what it's going to be like in 6-12 months… Only time will tell…

Different stylus technology: Wacom EMS vs n-trig
I personally think Wacom EMS technology is better than n-trig technology (from my almost 2 years experience with Surface Pro 1 and little bit over 3 days experience with Surface Pro 3). Wacom performs better (better hovering and just feels better when I write things down) and requires no battery for me at least.
Different screen ratio: 16:9 vs 3:2
I personally think 3:2 is better compromise. 16:9 is good for movies and such, but when you read PDFs and such, it's awful. 3:2 is closer to the A4 paper ratio.
Different CPU: Core M vs Atom CPU
Core M stemmed from Core i Y series (i.e. Surface Pro 3 used i3 Y processor for the cheapest possible option) whereas Cherry Trail is a part of Atom CPU line. The difference is, Core M uses more battery but performs better. Cherry Trail still uses eMMC whereas Core M tablets usually use SSD. In terms of benchmark at least, Core M CPU used on i7 Stylus was around 1.5 times better than one used on Surface 3 (I think it was geekbench, I have to check).
In short, CPU for laptop vs CPU for netbook/tablet.
Chinese vendor vs MS
Microsoft is good with the customer support (I'd argue that they are one of the best), whereas the chances are, you will have a hard time trying to get a customer support with the Chinese vendor (i.e. sending it back alone would cost you fair bit of money etc).
Core M may perform better, but it might have issues with heat dissipation (I've seen heatsink mods for Core i7 Stylus, so I assume that it's not non-existent). The performance comes from high TDP. You pay premium for Surface 3, but better service (against potentially non-existing customer service) alone might worth that much price, imo.
If I summarise it even further, cheaper 16:9 tablet with better "performance" vs more expensive 3:2 tablet with worse "performance", however, what you get from the device usually is beyond what is written on the paper. I personally think it'd be better to see these two as, one with laptop-y CPU (with possibly little to no consumer support or costly support) vs one with tablet-y CPU (with amazing customer support).

Yes I know I can hot-spot with my phone, but that essentially means I'm bound to a power outlet due to the short battery life while hot-spotting…and neither do I want a USB modem dangling out the side of the device.
I'm pretty sure most of the 4g modems are wireless these days.
That's what I'm planning to do. Get this tablet, get the data SIM out of my Tab S and pop it into a pocket Wifi kind of device, and carry the little bugger in the bag. Added bonus, both this tablet and the modem would be able to charge from a micro-USB 2.1A charger, so saves me the hassle of carrying 2 chargers as well.

Saving $180 sounds like a huge bargain but these things get made in china for a few dollars tops.
If they cut the price of the device itself by $180 it's a bargain. All they did was throw in an overpriced accessory. The saving only looks big because it was overpriced to begin with, as accessories normally are.

The margin as a % of sales price is higher on accessories than on the main unit itself.
A PS4 is about $500 ish, which is a pretty decent deal for what you're getting. But a dual shock 4 on its own is about $89. The $500 console comes with one already..
But it isn't worth anything without the Type Cover. And I really like the 'feel' of the type cover. I'll admit, I didn't realise how expensive the accessory is.

I've given up on waiting for a good LTE Win tablet.
A cheap telstra 4G modem in my glove box for times of need will do the trick. I'll remove my data SIM from the Samsung tab and pop it into the modem. And the Samsung tab can share the data from my Note 4 using SideSync app.

I've played a few AAA titles including Street Fighter IV Ultra at Medium. You could probably get away with a number of others, there's a youtube channel dedicated to Surface gaming and they set up the recommended graphics settings for optimal play. Though if you're into serious gaming, you'd probably be better off with the new Surface Book that has a dedicated Nvidia GPU when docked.

There are plenty of forums and reviews from other users of Surface 3 who experience battery not charging at 100%. I was just wondering whether there is any Ozbargainer who has similar charging issues?
I've also read about the charging issues on the surface 3. I took a good look at a display model and the wire just doesn't seem to fit snuggly into the port which raised questions for me.
The surface 3 has some nice features but a part of me can't stomach spending 700ish on 2gb of ram.

I frequent the surface sub in reddit and I read that if you're doing intensive task while plugged in, it uses up the battery faster than it could charge so the S3 is still draining slowly. While I understand some people like it's size/form factor, if you're not one of them I'd consider getting a used SP3 for an extra ~$100 or so. Just my 2c.. :)
I had charging problems with mine. Every so often when I plugged it in it would just say 'plugged in, not charging.' Then yeah just wouldn't charge… Got a replacement from the Microsoft Store.

I totally agree about there being a lack of competition. Its really hard to find a good quality windows 10 tablet. There aren't many out there and the few that are out their have low quality screens.

I paid at 3:30pm and got the CR email at 5:30. Probably doesn't make a difference, but I paid by card, no paypal.
I paid 5PM, got 730PM too. Paid using Westpac Plat visa for extra 12 months of warranty for good measure.
Got pretty much smack bang 4% on everything pre-GST (128GB tablet, pen, type cover).
The receipt goes like
Total (ex-GST) 811.81
GST 81.18
Total 892.99
Cash back in the email is 32.47 which is 4% of 811.81 (pre-GST price).
Ordered but the checkout page and email confirmation never show 'type cover' although the it's included. Anybody else notice this?
You had to check "add to cart" when it showed the type cover for $0 after adding the tablet to the cart.
My confirmation email certainly does show the type cover…it's been added at $179 and then a discount of $179 has been applied automatically down the bottom.
