Went to Coles this afternoon and found that the Machines are on special for 40 bucks. In the spirit of Ozbargain grabbed one, (even though not necessarily need it) in doubt if it is good or not. Opened it at home and works very well for the price. There were plenty left.

went to my local coles in sydney and it was $99
probably it is at specific stores
Singer is the cheapest junk you could ever imagine. I can't believe they used to be a top name in sewing.
Well they used to be a top name. I personally used a Singer and a Juki for many years. This one is noting like them but still worth the $40. To be honest, I wouldn't have ever bought at full price haha
This may be a dumb question - but is this machine strong/powerful enough to sew jeans (as in shortening jeans)?
And if not, how much does one need to spend for a machine that is?
Thanks for any tips.
I don't think this will be strong enough to sew jeans.
These new singer machines are cheap because the parts inside are all plastic and break easily.
I recommend you get a vintage singer off gumtree and get it repaired. It would be fine for shortening jeans but you have to be extra careful where many pieces overlap (the needle may break). From what I see, it is probably more suitable for some light, creative embroidery work.
Thanks for the feedback guys.
Any idea of what I should be looking for in order to hem jeans, and what price range would be appropriate?
Anyone successfully price matched this?
Yes. I did.
Thanks JV for sharing this deal
I tried to match price at Coles Spencer St CBD Melbourne with printed receipt from this page, but the manager was not able to match the $40 deal. He also looked up Norhtland and 1) confired it was $40 and 2) Northland is out of stockDoes anyone know other store with $40 deal?
Did they have any good prices on woodworking lathes ???
