Cheap booze from Coles' "barn"-style outlets.
Its worth trying a few different cleanskins, and go back for a case of what you like.
Some other good deals too - check out whatever is on the pallets out front.
e.g. Jacobs Creek bubbly for a little over $6.

  • That just isn't right to me… Wine should no way be that cheap, enjoy your headache.

    • You might be right about the red, but the Chardonnay tasted fine to me. Perfect for washing down the Chinese takeaway.
It doesn't taste bad, but might help you appreciate that nicely oaked better bottle you have with cheese next time. :-)

It's due to the grape glut that's been in the news. Bad news for growers, good fortune for wine drinkers.

You don't have to buy online to get this sort of price. The other day I saw that Dan Murphys was offering a branded red and a white for $2.50 in half-dozens. There were tastings before buying, so no risk. The regular cleanskins on the shelf were going for around $3 in singles and less in quantity. I'm sure you can find similar deals all over the place.

    Enjoy it while it lasts.

  • This is the perfect price for Stix, he can drink it with the leftover food from the back of the restaurant.

why on earth would you get a cleanskin? when they first came out, they were great, but no so any more …

in all honesty, if you love wine, ignore the stigma and get a bag of goon from stanley … because unless you're going to crack your 30$+ bottles, you wont notice a huge leap in quality … so many of the under 30$ bottles are shockingly bad, especially the cleanskins …

if you do find a good batch of cleanskin, post the batch number so we can test it, but I gave up trying after a few too many wasted bottles …

  • under $30? What's that - 99.8% of the market? (sales, not bottles displayed in the shop)
Its just fermented grape juice, mass produced on irrigated mechanised farms and stainless steel vats.
Tax is on price, not alcohol as for beer & spirits. It just takes a glut to get some bargains. Supply and demand.

No wine can match the complexity of food. With a cheap wine, you just want something to accompany the food:
some pleasant fruity flavours (esters), and no nasty aftertaste. Easy on the methanol, ketones, aldehydes, acetic acid, sulphur, etc.
Of course, "cheap" usually means under $10, not 2.50.

Whats the key factor in wine? Don't say taste. Lots of people drink decaf coffee, but nobody drinks dealcoholised wine.

  • Because dealcoholised wine tastes awful just like decaf.
