Stolen Huawei Y550 - Whats the best / similar option to replace it?

Just had my Y550 stolen yesterday. I actually really liked the phone. Used the stand-alone GPS all over the globe and it was fast and never missed a beat, the battery was far better than most and I also really like Huawei's menus etc. The only improvement required would be the camera.

Since I backed up my phone using the proprietary Huawei software, I'm very keen to get another Huawei phone.

Can anyone make any recommendations of similar size/ performance battery life / functions? or is the Y550 unique and I should find another?

Cheers

  • y not use android device manager to locate?

    • Don't know anything about it? But within 1 minute of it being stolen it was registering as switched off (probably pulled the battery).
So I assume it isn't traceable? I've also rang Telstra and cancelled the sim. Keen to know more about this though (before I cancel the IMEI)?

EDIT - Just looked it up. I have a pin lock, so they wont be able to access contacts etc. With the phone off, it's untraceable and the only data I would want to erase would be the SD Card, but the apps says it cant wipe the SD.

It's probably better than nothing for an amateur thief, and good if you have no SD Card. I'm just going to call and block the IMEI to at least make it a bit harder for them.

This phone is very much a bigger version of the Y550. 5 inches, but it has no upgrades to any of it's processor, RAM, memory or camera. Its a lot pricier than the Y550, but you can't get the Y550 for $49 anymore…

    • Cheers mate. I will most likely go through insurance, so whatever a Y550 is worth now, I guess that is what I will have to play with.
I'm with Telstra and live 400km outside the CBD (so will need the 850 support)

Any similar Huawie phones with a slightly better camera?

      • Huawei P8 Lite, but this is a $250+ phone. It has 13 megapixel camera, twice the onboard storage and twice the RAM.

Runs Huawei's home-grown processor. Battery is not removable.

        • I had a look at the p8. The screen response felt way off. I also couldnt see options like the Do Not Disturb mode (Maybe missing on lolipop? Not sure whats better in lolipop? i thought the kit kat layout was better). There was also a Y5 (Y560) that looks like the new 550? @ $129

        • @tunzafun001:

Do Not Disturb was replaced with Interruptions.

If you have trouble keeping up with android updates, you might want to know that Android Marshmallow is coming soon, so another learning curve for you, haha.

        • @scrimshaw:

I had a quick read. It looks like the DND mode is making a comeback in Marshmallow.
Is there any significant feature/ update on Lollipop that isn't present in KitKat?

      price on Optus website
      http://www.optus.com.au/shop/prepaidmobile/huawei/y635

There is one more upgrade with y635. its memory is 8gb.

      • Y635 might be an option if all Telstra bands are supported?

        • **3G Network** 900/2100/1900 MHz
          **4G Network** 700/1800/2100/2600 MHz

        • @abc boy:

Which rules out NextG (3G 850MHz), could be important for Telstra

  • ZTE Smart Fit 4G. Now that the partition flaw has been fixed, I can wholeheartedly recommend it. In some ways it's actually better than the Y550, e.g. faster processor, larger battery. The only problem is it's locked to Optus - not sure how easy it is to unlock it.

The full price is $99 but was selling for $49 at Woolies a short while ago (expired). Can be found on eBay for $70-$80.

    • Easily unlocked, but the Fit doesnt fully support Telstra.

I have seen the Y550 at K Mart recently.. may be hit or miss on which stores have them. Was $89 I think.
If you want a 5" screen with similar specs try the Y635. Big W have them but are $120 Optus prepaid. Last Saturday they had a one day only special for 50% off, hot bargain at $60 for those that scored it. Have seen the Y635 around for under $100 so keep an eye out.

    • Bargain! But are all Telstra bands Supported?

      • You can lookup the specs of any phones online.
Best to do that with any phone you choose anyway so there are no probs afterwards.

I've done a fair bit of research and discovered the Y635 doesn't support Telstra 3G 850. I have included a really good link from Whirlpool.

          http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2417619

          In summary:
Basically the same internals as the Y550 with a 5" screen. Same battery. Telstra 3G 850 has been removed, 4G 700 has been added.
Cheapest price it has been $59 (from Bigw), average price $89 - $99 (Australia Post, Coles, Optus Store etc).
Better Screen. Now uses Lollipop OS.
Optus users & Telstra people in 4G areas are happy campers except for no flashing LED notification on top!

Cheap case & screen protector here: $3.99

Wow, u sure did your homework. Hope others will find all that info handy. :-)
The 635 does sound like a lot of phone for the money.

Not sure where you or if website is accurate but harvey norman is still sell this but at $99. Mt Barker in Adelaide is showing stock if that is somewhere you could get to. (no delivery available) http://www.harveynorman.com.au/vodafone-huawei-ascend-pre-pa…

  • Ok, so I'm down to the Y635 or Y5 (Y560).

Most sites suggest the Y5 doesn't support Telstra 3G 850, but I was at the Telstra shop and the Y5 (Y560-L23) does support UMTS 850.
Here is a comparison, (as I don't know enough about Cortex A7 vs A53 and Adreno 304 vs 306 etc). What do people think?

    http://www.phonearena.com/phones/compare/Huawei-Y5,Huawei-Y6…

Screen size doesn't bother me. If the Y635 had 3G 850, I would lock it in (we do get 4G here now, but I did notice the Y550 would be connected to 3G every now and then).

*EDIT - Hold the phone (pardon the pun), but there is a Y635-L03 that does also support UMTS 850, now just need to find it??

I'm surprised that you like your Y550 GPS, to me its gps and camera are the down points, always lost GPS signal while I was coming into the Melbourne CBD after crossing West Gate bridge.

Maybe quality differences. Funny enough we did a snow trip & it was bucketing in Melbourne. Out of an iPhone, Samsung S something & my Huawei it was the only one that worked. Same in Thailand. Using Here Maps.

My local Coles have the Y635 for $79 at the moment. Not sure if it's statewide, but sale finishes tomorrow.
Locked to Optus, but still very cheap (even after buying an unlock code).

  • cheers
