Game Return Gone Wrong at Target as They Opened The Seal and Blamed It on Me

Do not shop at this store they are liars and bad.

I wanted to return an Xbox One game which was sealed, and the lady that worked there opened the seal of the game !
I saw her do it and she denied it, she even pressed scissors on it. Then said I had opened it, what? Then said I can't return it as it was opened. Hmm she just opened it in front of me and lied to the manager. It was at Target Waverley Gardens !

Not happy! This is outrageous !

I'm never going there again or shopping at Target. Sorry I'm ranting to much but I'm so mad.
I have no idea why she did this. I don't know her nor do I know what she gains out of doing this.

  • If you paid by credit/debit card a chargeback will make them talk to you if they insist they are right.

    • Paid by cc but bank said purchase was valid, from their perspective I got my item. Which is fair enough

      • Oops sorry from my phone it looks like you were replying to me, sorry haha

    • gezz you can't, he already got his item, charge back can not use on change of mind

What was her name? Name and shame!

  • Buy another game and return it and film her return handling technique to show her boss. Probably the only way that you will get the original game refunded now as you've now taken the goods away with a broken seal.

  • Let the witch-hunt begin.

    • should have taken a photo of her and threaten to put it on facebook

  • +2

It's not about the $20 that didn't matter. It's the fact that someone did you wrong right in front of you and then has the guts to lie to you looking into your eyes! I can never accept that. Workers like that deserved to be sacked.

    • Workers like that need to be named and shamed, that is, assuming she did open the seal (on purpose or by accident).

Didn't we all said we will stop buying games from target when recently they took GTA V off shelves because of feminists :p

    • +1

I haven't bought a game or console there since.

If they cheat, why don't you cheat. Go into store pickup another unsealed box and put back the open sealed box, get out and make sure you have the receipt on you. Then come back and do return. I know its unethical, but if what you say is right, then it is also unethical of them to do the same thing to you. So in a way unethical = unethical = even.

Your option, take it in a quick and easy unethical way, or take it the hard and long way to the head office as other suggested.

    • +4

Not worth the risk of being charged for shoplifting.

    • +6

      unethical + unethical != even

      unethical + unethical == 2unethical

      • Shall I say two wrongs make aright? But (-1) + (-1) = -2, how much more wrongs do you do till you're breaking bad?

      • The equation needs refining, i believe.

The subjective intensity, i, of the ethics probably needs to be considered. (e.g. not given enough 1st world free items vs heinous crime)

I also believe both need to be multiplied by t for time. As the quantity of suffering is also a factor. This will also need to be an averaged t, not constant, as OP would arguably not be suffering too much whilst sleeping last night, and a lot when allegedly getting lied to.

Not taking sides, just like the maths… ☺

  • What condition did you expect them to accept return of the game ?

Was it not fit for purpose of which it was intended or did you just not like that particular game ?

Write to Target management and / or their facebook page and tell them the specifics about it. Hell for $20 they'll send you a gift card just to avoid the publicity problem.

If you don't, then all your doing (and I mean this nicely) is causing yourself stress. Look at your outcome options

Option 1: You get on with life and lose the $20
Option 2: You take it further and complain.
Option 3: You do neither of those things, and instead continue to feel vexed, out of $20, and stressed.

Option 3 is terrible. It doesn't solve anything and you end up feeling like crap. So either go with option 1, which is "I got screwed. Oh well." or option 2.

    • You forgot option 4: Engage bikies. No stress and you can get on with your life.

      • Until they come back for "protection money"….

Nah don't let her get away with it, it's more about the principle now than the actual money.

Even if you don't get $20 back (which is unlikely), you'll still have the satisfaction of knowing you didn't let her win. If you did nothing wrong, there is no reason for you to feel the way you're feeling.

Hit up target on facebook or call up their head office and let her have it!

    • Oh already hit up facebook and spammed their wall giving bad feedback.

Oh you are a girl.. I pictures you as a boy. I found your post on target..

P.S. you should make your Facebook private. I can see all the information about you, your pictures, where you study, your friends etc.

Also I would not have complained with that attitude. Be civil and communicate properly. It looks like more of a rant and gives a bad impression about you. Just FYI.

    • I never had a problem but thanks I thought it was already I will do that. I just checked my facebook everything is friends of friends or friends only, not sure why you can see everything

Woah OP, why is the grammar you use on fb and ozbargain completely different? Your facebook post makes you sound like you are 10 years old (no offence, I know your English is better than that) and it might reflect badly on how the Target reps see you.

Because I was on my phone and mad and spell check and i couldn't be bothered fixing it and I suck at spelling and I type to fast and press enter a lot

@shadowrukia: so what did target rep say to you?

  • i have never bought game from target, in store though i just bought xbox one when it on special with target ebay.
the point is , i prefer buy from jb or eb game where i can safely return the product within one week after i bought, play or unplay, they will give you credit back and no hassle.
the good thing is, they even price match with any target or harveynorman when the game its on special.

I had a similar story. Back when Mario party 10 special edition had the clearance sale I picked up one of the last copies only to come home and find the box empty. Upon returning to the store they looked over the box and saw that someone had bent back the top box part (where the security claw) would have been and taken it out. They went out back and got me another. Dressed in thongs and old gym clothes after work I thought they would have been more suspicious.

Reminds me that I once bought a play tv from target. Get home no disc in the box. Woman at returns says I don't need a disc 20 minutes of arguing I finally got a refund. The woman was convinced she was right and I didn't need a disc. Despite it being labeled on the packaging and the manual.

At the end of the day target is a huge company and its just going to employ idiots. Not really a reflection on target. I honestly don't get why people get so annoyed to do a refund or the like as it only takes a few minutes. Not like they are losing the money!

There is a solution to attitude… Give it back!

I remember returning a faulty laptop to Glen Waverly Target and the staff member gave me attitude about my receipt being faded and being unable to be read. Once I sarcastically told her I never knew dockets had care instructions she kept her mouth shut and ultimately I received my refund.

Why such staff (low paid retail workers) give attitude to customers is beyond me. It is not like Mr Wesfarmers or Mr Woolworths is going to give them a a**hole bonus.

    • +10

Back when I was employed in such a position I would also question why my fellow work colleagues would take their retail job so serious. Customers were taken aback when I was so quick and courteous in processing a refund, I didn't even let them finish their refund story haha. Got to the point where I didn't even check the product because I knew if the customer complained enough, management would refund it anyway and make me look like an idiot. I was just cutting out the middle-man.

Well said lol! Sorry had to comment just to emphasize how well written that line was.

  • Seems like there are a lot of problems with Target.

I can't understand why the staff is doing that and she should act the right way honestly and ethically per company policy.

OP should request to see store manager on the spot.. It's too late now. You can try to file a complaint to make them aware.

I bought skylanders for the kids and the game wouldn't play on the xb1. Took it back to Target (Melbourne City) and refused to return even after I told them the game was useless to me.
I then got on a chat with Activision games and told them the problem and said I wanted to return it. They told me to return to point of sale. Got them to send me an email with above statement.
I then printed it and took it to Target Fountain Gate. The lady looked at the email and promptly gave me a refund.
Based on the forums what I learned is to always price match and buy with EB Games because they accept returns even if the game is opened.

  • I don't know why but in my experience K-Mart has always been a more affable and approachable venue to seek refunds/returns than Target.

It's almost like Target is attempting to create a more upper market vibe/experience but lacks the nouse to adequately achieve it, whereas K-Mart comprehends that they are catering to a customer who is in my opinion generally more pragmatic about purchases.

Unfortunately I also agree with the sentiment that, on the whole, Target staff seem to be largely vague and uninterested when I ask questions or seek information on products in their stores.

If what the OP says is indeed true then it's incredulous to believe that anyone in their right mind would a; bother to open a sealed package to check its contents (clearly the contents remained sealed, thus not damaged or compromised in any way) or b; not simply admit that they fouled up and provide the customer with appropriate respect and remediation, considering that they, the staff member, buggered around.

First rule when returning anything, Always send your mum.

    • Or wife….

Like you, I made a personal decision to boycott target. I even blocked target deals from appearing on my ozbargain front page. Will never step in again!

C'mon OP, update us, the nosey person in me is wanting to know what happened

      • +3

So basically, they scammed you, you're annoyed enough to complain here and on Facebook but now you can't be bothered when they try to resolve things?

      • +2

Nothings gonna change at Target due to your incident. The staff most likely won't get into trouble, management will probably think its just another 10 year old nutcase trolling to get free stuff (no offence, but the comment/complaint you left on their page does not help your case or portray you as a pleasant mature customer).

plus the game now is 5 dollars at target so I guess thats why they didnt want to return it.

So the entire store planned this all along? Breaking the seal so they can deny you your huge $20 refund?

You need to calm down, not let your feelings and emotions take over your head and make matters less favourable for you.

I had problems with staff of eb games because they wouldn't honor my price match and other things they did. i went on there facbook page and twitter and told them what happened. with in the hour i had private messages from head office. They said sorry for the trouble and go back to the store and you will no longer have trouble with them. and i haven't ever since. internet is a powerful thing. especially with stores like this. One bad experience can have a chain reaction on them.
Good luck. you have every right to get your money back.

    Call up some bikies.

    Thread Closed.

  • Did you have to show the game and receipt to anyone like a security guard before you entered the store? Other than that, I'd say that Target would want you to call their customer relations team, so they can log the details of the incident. This would then go back to the manager and staff member. Also, it doesn't matter what the price is now, they go off what you paid on your receipt.

  • My suggestion would be to get a price match at a retailer that keeps the cases sealed in original plastic or in a locked case. Then return that new copy to Target and they lose your business and another retailer earns it.
