First Time to Hong Kong

Hey Everyone,

Hoping someone can help me decide where to stay and/or what to do in Hong Kong. Was going to go to Bali but doesn't look like that will be happening, so settled on Hong Kong. We can't decide whether to stay in somewhere like Central, or Mong Kok which seems to be cheaper. Is it better to stay on Hong Kong Island, or the other side? Shopping will of course be involved, along with going to the Peak, Victoria Park, Disneyland.

Trying to find a reasonably nice hotel, ideally including breakfast for around $300 AUD a night.

Hoping to head to Shenzhen for a day or two and also Macau if anyone has any recommendations on what to do there?

Cheers!

Food… Street food highlights: curry fish ball, egg waffle with peanut sauce and condensed milk. If you are adventurous deep fried intestine and stinky tofu. Restaurants: roast goose, tim ho wan (Michelin star dim dum but quite cheap). Tourist destination: big Buddha (which has great tofu dessert). I personally also get suits made (e.g. Jantzen) - similar price to off the rack here, but tailored. Custom shirts are cheap

  • Go here.

Missed out on my chance to go here. Went to disneyland instead and regretted it.

  • Shenzhen - what to do? made by the legendary serpentza.

  • Hong Kong has excellent public transport so as long as you stay near an MTR station you can get pretty much anywhere easily.
We stayed right near Jordan station and found it just about perfect.

  • Macau is a must, provided you are not addicted to gambling.

All the casinos provide top class floor shows lasting some half hour, which one might need to pay up to $100 elsewhere for free. Portuguese food worth a try too.

    • Agreed, Macau is a nice place to visit especially old Macau side. If you're into the vivid bright lights of casinos by all means, but I found old part of Macau to be much more interesting.
From memory you can walk down the cobbled road from the ruins of St Paul and sample (for free) the assorted of Portugese snacks.

Mongkok is fine. Lot more shopping and street stalls and more vibrant at night. Central is actually mainly a banking, business district. Public transport is so good in HK it doesn't really matter where you stay as long as it's not away from railway lines in New Territories. Keep you valuables and passport close with you at all times, security is questionable particularly in crowded places.

Disneyland in HK is small compared with other ones overseas. I recommend Ocean Park too, more animals. Victoria Park is actually only several concrete football fields put together, not much to see unless during festivals when there are stalls. The Peak is a must-see, stay until night to see the spectacular night view.

    • +1 for peak night view, I advise going to see the sunset and then wait for the night view.

  • Cheers for all the suggestions everyone. Will look into them all now. Thanks!
