Hong Kong Family Hotels Please HELP.

Hi.

Can anyone please help. I'm looking for accommodation in Hong Kong but unsure which area to stay , i think my head is going to explode through looking, I'm hearing mixed reports in areas from different people.

I'm traveling with my partner and two kids age 7 &11, I have been told to either stay near the Harbour, Kowloon or Hong Kong island.

Can people please give me any reviews on these areas and why ? and also recommend any hotels.

What is the best way from the airport to the hotel taxi, train or airport bus?

Thankyou Guys.

  • Two sides to the harbour: Kowloon and HK island

Either is convenient to stay as long as your close to an MTR train station. Buy a metro card (Octopus) cost $150HKD up front ($100 credit and $50 deposit). You get desposit and remaining back at airport or any station when you leave

Easiest way is to buy the octopus at the airport for each person and get on the Aiport Express. Stops Kowloon and HK island. From each station there are free shuttle buses to hotels (Google airport express shuttle bus or contact your hotel to get bus number)

Accommodation is expensive. Good recommendations are:
    - YMCA hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui (Kowloon side)
    - ibis in Sheung Whan (HK island)
    - B.P. International in Jordan/Tsim Sha Tsui (Kowloon side)

Taxi are cheap…. Most drivers speak English. Otherwise just get the Chinese characters for attractions from Google/Wikipedia or I use an app called "taxi cards" HK

Any more Q let me know..

    • Thankyou for your help. I was looking at the Park Royal Plaza in Mongkok? Would you recommend this area with two kids and easy transport to get the Disneyland and the Harbour for the light show

      Thankyou

  • Also airport express does "group discount" for families. Ask at airport station before you leave (obvious info counter)

Although if you have 4ppl a taxi is almost the same price - usually $250 Kowloon or $300-$340 to HK island

Google MTR map to get an idea on the layout of city

    • Thankyou, looks like a taxi maybe the best option

      • or take the bus, it's like HKD60…

        EDIT: that's for 4 people

The ideal place to stay will depends on how long your stay and mainly what you want to do with family, and whether your preference is to go budget or comfort.
Last visit we stay in HK Disneyland - absolutely wonderful.
For convenience to shop, stay Tsim Sha Tsui, Jordon, Mongkok (in Kowloon), Causeway Bay/ near Central in HK Island.
Agreed with @Justplanemad - taxi is cheap. most people can speak English. should feel safe. Food is good. only to watch out for is buying cameras and electronics in tourist area. prefer proper shops - department stores.

    • Thankyou for your info. Will have a good read now,

  • We like the Royal Plaza in Mongkok as it is quite convenient to MTR station and a shopping centre is located right next to it. We have stayed there twice and the rooms were quite spacious. There is also a pool. It's located near ladies market and other markets plus it's easy to find good food in the area. Mthere is also a food court and small supermarket love acted in the shopping centre. We had a day where the kids were too hot and tired to be taken out so we spent the afternoon in the hotel watching an in house movie eating take away from the food court. It made life easier knowing that we didn't always have to go out to get dinner but could just nip next door into the centre. I could also shop when the kids were resting in the hotel room. If I recall correctly, we also had wifi included in our accomodation and we could squeeze in one room.

    • Hi, Thankyou for the info this is one of the hotels I have narrowed it down too. I've actually just emailed the hotel for more info. How far is it to Disneyland and the harbour for the light show etc? We are only there three days but the kids want a pool too for the evenings to chill and relax.

Did you feel safe around there etc, would you recommend at taxi from the airport that seems best for a family of four,

      Thankyou

      • Hotel Is virtually next to MTR station. 3 Stops from Harbour (Tsim Sha Tsu) for night show. One straight line to walk along Nathan Road around 40 mins if you choose too. Again cheap taxi. Disneyland is about an hour if memory serves me right. Need to change platform in HK with MTR, but again very easy ride. The train to the Disneyland station actually decor as Disney. Kids will like it.

If you go Tsim Sha Tsui, stop by Sogo or Ocean Terminal (ToyRus). Visit the Space Museum, catch the Star Ferry to Hong Kong, walk up to the Tram Station to go up to the Peak (HK icon) - window shopping in Central, catch a tram to Sheung Wan, Causeway Bay shopping - MTR back to Mongkok - these can be 2 days activities.

The hotel looks good and close to MTR. Great location. Can shop till 2am in the morning.

        • Wow… Thankyou for the info. I've saved this and will have a good look into everything. It's hard to decide which is best 😁😁. We are only there two nights three days so just want it to be right for the kids mainly, we will be traveling back from the UK and thought of doing the stopover for a break on the way back to Melboure.

        • @LANCASHIRELASS: the hk MTR is awesome. I've lived in melb, London, Tokyo and (snigger) brisbane. Plus travelled 40 other places. HK MTR FTW.
Trains every 5 minutes, clean efficient. I got around with my family no problem. Also, We stayed at the panda motel. They have a few 2 room family suites. Our room had just been renovated and was awesome. My only tip (apart from night markets) is to catch a random double decker bus going any where. See random stuff as you travel by bus.

      • Check out website, https://www.royalplaza.com.hk/hotelinformation/transportatio…. We took the airport express and shuttle option. We felt safe walking around.

We went everywhere by MTR but can't remember how long it took us. We just bought buns from a bakery the night before and caught an early train to Disneyland.

  • I always stay at the Harbour Plaza North Point, it is within walking distance to the MTR station and the hotel itself is very nice. There is a supermarket just across the road, a starbucks, a cafe, banks and also a McDonald's. They are doing a promotion for stay 2 nights and get 1 free at the moment. http://www.harbour-plaza.com/northpoint/SpecialOffer-buy-2-g…

  • We are a family of 5 and it was near impossible to find a hotel that allowed 5 of us but Madera Hotel was great and allowed all 5 of us to stay. In a side street off Nathan Rd and so very close to everything we could possibly need. We walked most places and even our young kids were ok. The hotel was almost brand new when we visited. It wasn't cheap but then again nothing in HK was cheap….Check them out.

  • I was in Hong Kong two weeks ago. Stayed at Harbour Plaza North Point for 4 nites. Nice hotel, standard room reasonably okay by Hong Kong standards, certainly not small. MTR station (Quarry Bay)is 5 mins walk across the street. Took an Airport Bus (I think it was route #12)from airport to hotel and cost 45HK dollars. Journey was about 1 hour and it stopped about 100 metres from the hotel. Can ask the Visitors Information counter at the airport for assistance. They are very helpful.

Drivers don't give change, hence u may have to purchase bus ticket from the ticketing counter ,20 or 30 metres from the waiting line. Just ask the people around there for direction. Return by Airport Express train to avoid traffic congestion and also a bit far to walk to bus stop(with luggage)for the return trip. Ticket was 80 HK dollars, excluding 10 or a bit more for the MTR ticket to the airport express train station. Hotel conceirge ready to advise you on how to use public tranport to see places.

Moving around was really easy as mentioned in earlier comments. Going to Disneyland by MTR from Hotel was around 28 HK dollars. From this hotel, can go to Nathan Road (Tsim Sar Tsui)easily. The trains are really efficient. Food may be a slight problem near the hotel area unless u don't mind Starbucks, MacDonald or standard Hong Kong local food(restaurant nearby very cheap). If you go to Times Square (Causeway Bay), there is a food court with more options for the family. I think the standard meal was around 70 HK dollars at the food court.

Google "Klook" for discounted tickets to Disneyland or Airport Express train. Don't think they offer family discounts.
