Chinese Red Envelopes 6 from US$0.49/AU$0.68, CREE Q5 7W Mini Torch US$1.99/AU$2.78 @ Everbuying

380

I have been in elaborate discussions with Everbuying, who are keen to come up with products attractive to the Australian market (especially Ozbargain!). They have been fantastic to deal with.

At my suggestion, Everbuying has introduced a new line of products: Chinese Red Envelopes (Hongbao).

In Australia, red envelopes can be hard to find, in spite of the huge Chinese community. Whatever I bought online has been expensive and poorly suited to Australian currency (often have to double-fold notes to fit). Everbuying are introducing a range of nicely-designed envelopes of sizes suited to Australian bank notes and at prices which are better than elsewhere online (as far as I could tell), even eBay.

To make this post popular, they have reduced the price further on 5 envelopes which I thought would be most popular:

6 x Children Pattern CNY Greeting Red Envelope 12x8x0.2cm @ US$0.49/AU$0.68
6 x Minion CNY Red Envelopes 11x8x0.2cm @ US$1.22/A$1.70
36 x Tiny Fu and He Character Square CNY Red Envelope 9x9x0.1cm @ US$5.04/AU$7.04
30 x Pink Good Luck Greeting Congratulation Envelope @ US$4.06/$AU5.67
5 x Congratulations and Best Wishes Wedding Red Envelope 9x17cm @ US$0.94/AU$1.31

The full range of envelopes can be found here. They want to introduce more over time, depending on how well their current range sells.

Please note: Being a newly introduced product, they are testing popularity with limited stock. If this product is very popular, they will order additional stock which can add up to one week maximum to your order.
I hope these will be popular, as this has taken weeks to get sorted.

To sweeten this post further, they put out a special on the popular CREE XP 7w Zoomable Mini Torch for just US$1.99 (AU$2.78) just for this post. That is the cheapest price by far anywhere at the moment.

Everbuying also advised me of other products popular to the Australian market which they currently have the lowest prices for (and lots of stock):

Zeblaze Rover MTK2501 Bluetooth Smart Watch @ US$29.99/AU$41.59 (cheapest elsewhere ~AU$54+)
Naviforce 9044 Men Japan Movt Quartz Military Watch @ US$9.99/AU$13.87 (cheapest elsewhere ~US$18)

Probably uncheck the shipping insurance before you "place order"

Please note: I do not receive any benefit/reward from posting this. I am just trying to help Everbuying to identify products which are beneficial to the Ozbargain community. And to sort out my red envelope problem, for which I just put in an order :)

    NI HAO

  • Why would you want this?

    • +4

During Chinese New Year, it is tradition to give red envelopes with money.

      • +4

        Ah yes..

I got one from my local CHinese shop. THey told me not to open it until I was 18… (profanity) that, opened it and it contained 5 cents (New ZEaland).

        Not cool bro

        • +8

Not cool indeed. If you had that 5 cent invested since the beginning, it would be 6 cents by now.

        • +6

@DeafMutePretender: NZ 5c was was phased out in 2006 so now worth 0c

        • @BigglesKDH: i'm thinking the otherway around, if it was phased out (extinct/stopped production) wouldn't it becoming more valuable?

        • @0031nek:

Low supply/rarity of a product is meaningless if there is no demand for that product either.

      • +2

Do the above envelopes come with money?

        • +2

Oh yeah,it comes with $100 note inside it,lol

        • +1

Yes counterfeit bank notes and fake credit cards compliments from the triad.

      • +1

        hey its me ur brother

        • Brother Bob? Is it really you?

        • no it's not

      • Kind of interested in this. Why do they have to be red envelopes? When/why did this particular custom start? How much is usually given & to whom (only close relatives or friends or just anyone you like or know)? Is this exclusively a Chinese thing or do other Asian cultures also give monetary gifts? How long has it been around (pre or post Communism, hence the red)?

In Western cultures, or perhaps more accurately Anglo ones, giving money is sometimes frowned upon, which seems silly and probably explains the rise of the much less useful gift cards.

"Here is a card which you can only use in particular store within this particular time frame."

        • This custom has been going on for a long time…
the red envelopes are for luck, older generation give to younger members of family or close family friend, usually given to children or young adults that haven't found their first job. It's based on a traditional story, that the money will keep bad spirits away on Chinese New Year Eve.
white envelopes are given to direct family member during a funeral.

I have Vietnamese friends who get "New year Money" from relatives and family friend

    • Considering the majority of goods sold in Australia are made in China all you need to do is spray paint your white envelopes red.

I wonder if Chinese people subtly give higher denomination red envelopes to family members/friends they like more.

"Hey, I like you! You helped me when my car broke down a few months ago. Have a $50 red envelope!"

"I heard you have been talking about me behind my back. Have a $5 one."

Damn, that was a quick upvote. Literally seconds after I posted it. You must be a fast joke-reader.

Dude, do you live in the bush or something? Red pockets are easy to find in Sydney!

    • I'm in WA, and only really see them in Chinese shops (which are not exactly on every street corner), and they're expensive.

      • I'm in WA and i see them in Chinese shops which are in every shopping area.
And they are not expensive at all..

        • +5

Banks give them out for free.

  • +1

Ehh, bought a pack of minion ones, because why not.
But for the love of bargains, remember to uncheck the "insurance" box, which doubles the cost of red packets.

Also, I remember that usually the Big4 banks give them away to customers. YMMV

  • I'm in WA. Get them free from banks.

    • I'm with 3 banks, but haven't been inside one for years…

    • which banks?

      • Yes and other banks

      • ANZ I know give them out free. Like a whole pack not just one or two. Not sure about others, but have heard that they do.

  • +3

Bribery in a legal way ?

    • Funny enough. Accepted as in gift and hospitality policy in many places as "customs" .

  • +1

They are sold widely everywhere in Asian Shops around Melbourne, but other than Asian, who really want them ? lol

Of all suggestion you can make you single handedly asked them to introduce hongbao, really? There are more important suggestions you could make like faster shipping, say 2 weeks max. Even they could start with faster order processing, say posted in 24 hour, last time I bought piston from them it took them 1 1/2 week just to post my order. Banggood even worse, 5 weeks and counting my xiaomi battery still not arrived.

Plus nowdays most banks can give you a free packet of hongbao if asked them. Last year HSBC just offered me one packet when I visited their counter.

    • How do you know I have not spoken to them about shipping? Elaborately? There is only so much they can do for free shipping, but they're trying to be better than the rest. And this site is not Banggood, so not sure what the point of that argument is.
My bank charges for over-the-counter transactions, and I haven't needed one in 5 years.

      • So expected delivery after chinese new year then? Btw everybuying is a bit dodgy with payment made to "Hassan" in Paypal, it will be more reassuring if the the account name is some chinese pty ltd, with a proper email address, not some random gmail. I bought one piston from them from the last deal posted here, I'll see how it goes when it arrived.

        • +1

sorry for the paypal account bother you,but you can count on it,Hassan do is our paypal account,I have confirmed with
our accountant for many times,I guess our boss named Hassan???LOL \^o^//

As for the delivery,we have notified take first priority testing and packing for customer from Australia, this could save some delivery time.the production of Chinese Red Envelopes finished already, will back to ourwarehouse soon, everything is under control.~@^_^@~

    From web page:

    "Caution
Please keep this product away from very young children, as contact with ink could be harmful."

    WT????

    • +2

      Lead based ink?

    • young baby always need more protections, this caution is just a kind reminding.=^_^=

    • TOXIC materials used!

  • +7

Damnit, I misread the title as "Chinese Red Eneloops"

    • +1

Same here, I believe the word envelopes should be taken out of the language as it looks too familiar with eneloops.

  • +1

you guys have this as well, you call it gift card here.

  • If you receive in of these laden with cash are you meant to declare it as income to the ATO?

    • +1

Silly question, if your parents give you $100, do you have to declare it too ? lol

  • I think you can ask for a few for free at ANZ or NAB.

I ask for free red pockets every year.

  • The minion ones are pretty cool and not something you would get here so I reckon it's worth it just for those.
But yeah as everyone else has stated, hong bao is easy to come by in Perth - and I'm not even of chinese heritage :)

    • I don't like to give out the ones with bank advertising on them. And I never go to banks… They're always closed during the times I can go.

      • I have the same feeling as you,in China, most of us always use Alipay for everything, like eating, shopping, watching movie,
cause go bank for cash always is so complex, you will need Line up,but there is always so many people for weekend, people only
have time to go bank at weekend, they need work at Monday to Friday.

  • Get them for free from any of the banks when CNY is near. Westpac/ANZ/HSBC always have lovely ones. CBA can be nuts, like last year when they had BLUE envelopes! (WTF thought it'd be good to have BLUE envelopes for CNY??)

The only ones I've bought had messages for other events like birthdays.

  • +1

I read this as Chinese Red Eneloops…

    • Made from the blood of those who put newspaper in the red pocket.

  • the torch is showing as US$2.43
