Need a new TV (approx 50")

Hi all,

My current Samsung 40" LCD (which I purchased in 2007) has finally started to cark it. It's already had the capacitors replaced which was a common issue with this specific model. There's a few other things it doesn't do that I want it to do anyway, so time to start looking before this one blows up.

Looking for:
50" or bigger
Smart TV is optional, but preferred
Good pic quality, sound doesn't matter as I have a surround system.
Minimum 3 HDMI ports

I've been out of the loop for a long time so don't know if there's a great deal of difference between the Soniq/HiSense/Kogan vs Samsung/LG/Panasonic.

We don't watch live sports and I'm not fussy when it comes to TV, mostly just stream Netflix or watch a bit of FTA. Also connected to it will be a HTPC.

Any recommendations? Budget is $1000 or less.

65" of goodness for just about smack on your budget? :)

    Some discussion here on it

    • 65" is a bit big, I should have made it more clear in the post - perhaps 50-55" is around about what I'm looking at.

Also some people are saying the quality isn't so good on this particular model. Sweet spot would be $700-900 for something of reasonable quality if do-able :)

      • what distance are you viewing from?

        • ~3m

We're moving house in 6-7 months and I don't want anything too big just in case the new place has a different living room layout and we're stuck sitting right in front of a 65" TV watching the pixels

        • We watch a 60" from 2.5m. Took us all of an hour or two to get used to it. 65" at 3m is a very watchable TV.

  • try this mate, https://appliancecentral.com.au/shop/index.php?route=product…

it's $980 and an Ultra HD Smart TV, image quality is far superior to a Full HD TV

  • I'm in the market for a new telly too mate and from what I've read a lot of people say the smart tv options are not all that flash. They say a lot of the apps are very slow to load and cumbersome to use with a remote. Many recommend a Chromecast so I'm thinking along those lines

  • I ended up splashing out on a Samsung 55" UHD TV today. The good guys had a cashback deal via an EFTPOS card so I got $150 off the price plus what I negotiated, which wasn't that much to be honest. They are pretty hard to bargain with these days because they know everyone goes in store then whips out their phone to find the cheapest price online.

Just praying now that someone else will have it cheaper within 30 days so I can either make use of the good guys price guarantee, or if needed my platinum credit card's price guarantee policy.

The TV is absolutely awesome. I almost didn't go for the UHD/4k but my wife pushed me towards it since it was only about $150 more. There isn't much content now but sitting in the loungeroom tonight watching some 'demo reels' on YouTube in 4k was just amazing.
