  • OzBargain, tell me why I shouldn't buy this

not really a bargain, i saw it $299 instore jbhifi 2 weeks ago.

  • They had the sand version for $315 down from $449 in the Dicksmith Ebay sale a month ago.

  • Does this thing still fail to offer the same apps on android as IOS??

The devs were full of undelivered promises a long time after this first came out. If it isn't fixed yet, it never will be.

    • Yes, the android version does not have director mode which was promised in 2013.

  • BE AWARE: The drone app is not compatible with IOS 9. So if you have a iPhone with IOS 9, you can't fly the drone…

  • Hi OzBargain Community,
Does anybody here have any experience of these. Are they easy to fly ? When I say easy I mean fool-proof.
Any time I tried one of those cheap micro helicopters before I never managed anything that resembled stable flight.
I saw one over my house a few weeks back in the dark so don't know if the person controlling it was an expert or not…

    • Drones are very stable compared to helicopters… Much easier to fly.

      • Thanks noise36, much appreciated

      Hi there,

I haven't got this exact model but I've got quite a few RC helicopters and quadcopters.
In my experience, you really need to master how to fly a quad before flying a drone.

Reason is, when you're flying, you need to be able to control the UAV (unmanned aerial vehicles) and be confident about it. That itself takes time and skill.

secondly, when you're recording, you can easily be pulled away focusing on aerial photography (it's great fun) and video trying to get that best shot which can easily distracts you from operating your UAV. that's when a lot of accidents happen and whilst it's not as serious as losing or damaging your drone, you really don't want to be the one on the news who lost control and injured someone or someone's property.

bottom line is, none of these are fool proof and even if they market it as fail safe, if you're not able to fly your micro helicopter confidently, try upgrading to something around $100 which you can find online, once you're a lot more confident, than upgrade to something that takes aerial photography

note that flying a helicopter and drone is quite different

also worth while to do some reading online to know where you can fly… legally.

      • Thanks PavloXYZ, I appreciate the detailed response

  • What's the battery life/flight time + charge time for these units?

    • Parrot AR Drone 2.0 = CRAP

I crashed and broke two Frames in 1 months usage - That was the last time that I used it…
Not worth returning for warranty (Freight Cost and the worry of will they repair with physical damage?)
Frames start from $66 on eBay. Then you have to take it all apart to fix :(

Easy to Fly - Easy to crash (Crashes if sensors fail up to 8m - DO NOT FLY on grass)
Fly Time - 10 min on standard battery if you are lucky (I believe they say 12 - 15 min)
Flying in wind - NO !!! (You have NO control and will crash or lose it)

Windows Phone app seem's like the cut down version as well…
