A great alternative if you just need navigation & offline maps is Here Maps and it's also free.

    • Which do you think is better and why?

      • +1

I haven't tried City maps, but Nokia's/Microsoft's Here has local POIs [Service station, Church] that went four years ago, and hasn't got one [Mosque], New service station further away] that date from two years ago. This one has no saved places in Adelaide - but it does show bust-stops accurately [with stop number], shopping centers, parks ect and a few less churches than Here maps….

      • City maps 2go gives you the offline maps and the guides of city. It doesn't give you the turn by turn voice navigation as HERE Maps does.

The only drawback for HERE is that it doesn't have the maps for Japan. I use MAPS.ME in Japan because it's a free offline map with routing option.

      • I find it better to download the google map of the city I am visiting and then use it offline.

There are so many wifi hotspots now that you can always download additional maps if you like to travel without plans.

I tried city maps, they are not very detailed maps and very poor outside of the tourist hotspots, for example, completely useless in Sri Lanka or Eastern Europe when I visited there.

Just use a proper map like google. It's free after all.

no offline navigation though with google maps

        • @Tm15: I use my gps unit if I am driving and therefore in need of navigation.

As this post is about City maps to go, which is used to move around a new city on foot, I suggested a better alternative for that particular need.

    • Most of these offline maps things get their data from openstreetmaps.

There is also an OsmAnd app which is open source.

Its "actually free" (full versions) from Amazon Underground since they moved to a free model:
    http://www.amazon.com/CityMaps2Go-Pro-Offline-Travel-Guide/d…
    http://www.amazon.com/Halfbrick-Studios-Pty-Ltd-Zombies/dp/B…

Amongst the 58 pages of other apps and games on there. You should try it out if you have an Amazon account with the new Amazon client.

    • Wow, never heard of this Amazon underground thing… Normally I use Amazon appstore, but this sounds new to me… Thanks!

      • Yes but to use it you must agree for it to have permission to monitor your entire phone / device.

        • Ugh, it doesn't allow me to install the game/app, it keeps telling me that I'm not eligible to download due to geographical restrictions…. Well anyway, it's time for me to use Google credit from google survey then

Not available to Australia. Wasted my download on this. Did you even check it yourself?

I am on the US Amazon account that I got ages ago. It works fine. I downloaded like at least a dozen apps from Underground that includes the IAP for Freemium stuff. In fact, I've even uninstalled some Google Play apps to put the Underground equivalent in there since they offer IAP's for free (eg. Jetpack Joyride). As far as monitoring is concerned, what do you think Google does in the background? Along with the free Google Play credits from the quesionaires? "Can you please confirm that you went to these stores on these dates?".. Its no different in reality.

  • From the looks of it once you buy the pro app you don't have to purchase individual cities?

    • anyone can confirm?

    • Yes. That's what I experienced on iOS.

    • +1

The free version also allows unlimited maps. For this pro version you are paying for no ads.

      • It used to, now it's 5 free.

    • The free version use to be limiteed to 5 maps only. But yes, both unlimited and pro is ad-free

  • Also… Installing Amazon underground is replacing your normal Amazon application too..

  • used CityMaps 2Go Pro recently in Singapore, using Note3.
found the map to be quite outdated, and GPS was still being used even after exiting the program, which drained battery fast.

switched to maps.me app for a much more pleasant experience, and better map.

    my 2c.

    • MAPS.ME had recently been spammed. I wouldn't have my details and permissions for that app at all.

      Uninstalled like Viber

      • They recently had a bug where the app was sending notifications in 28 languages instead of 1. They apologised and fixed it on the same day. Is that what you mean? I'm not sure how that means they've "been spammed"?

        https://www.facebook.com/MapsWithMe/posts/820693014717432:0

        • Yea I wouldn't trust the company any longer. They say they fixed, but I wouldn't count on it.

I would use HERE maps instead

        • @neonlight: I reported it to them via the app, and they responded within 2 minutes to let me know it was an issue with a notification on that day. I've been using their app for 3 years and never had any other notifications from them.

To me, being honest and owning their one communications mistake makes me recommend them more. In any event, you could always configure it so you don't get any notifications.

I was driving in the country, petrol light flashing, no reception for mobile data. Used CityMaps to find the nearest petrol station, engine stalled as I was pulling in.

The first and only time I've used the app even though I've had it installed for a year, but quite thankful it was on there!

  • I have the free version on my phone and it has many pinned locations as I'm travelling overseas soon. Is there a way I can upgrade via in-app purchase rather than downloading the pro version, so I can keep my maps? When I tried just now it says I need to pay $5.57 :(

  • When I use HERE, my phone gets incredibly hot - fast. Do any of the other versions mentioned here, run cooler?

    • Whenever I turn on GPS location, the phone goes hot quickly, no matter it's HERE or MAPS.ME.

      • Thanks.
