  • Any 5TB reds?

    • +2

      Yep, they sell those also.

      • I mean any on sale? And at a cracker price like HN's recent sale.

  • The Seagate drives are also on special and have free shipping…

    • I bought a pair of 2TB Seagate NAS drives…..they are a lot noiser than the 2TB WD Reds I already had in my NAS.

Before when I had 2x 2TB WD Red I didn't hear the NAS spinning whilst under load…now with 2x 2TB Red + 2x 2TB Seagate NAS I can hear it quite clearly. Yes 4 drives vs 2, but it is a startling difference.

Next time I will stick to WD Reds.

      • Fair enough.

Personally I prefer the Seagate Barracuda's but I don't use them for NAS.

Reds have the stupid green technology which has to be disabled for them to work in some devices (and disabling it in theory voids your warranty if they ever checked the BIOS).

Seagate current gen 2tb Barracuda have a bad reputation for reliability, but I've got a lot and (fingers crossed) they haven't missed a beat for me…

        At $98 a pop, better value than $126 for a Red…

I do like the WD Blue drives, but the 2tb Blue costs $115 plus (and SE don't sell it at all). Hard to justify the additional coin… The 1tb Blues are awesome but they are often 7200rpm, whereas the 2tb and above Blue are all 5400rpm…

        • I think the Seagates are OK if you turn off the very aggressive head parking which can run into the hundreds of thousands of parks in a short time wearing out the drive.

The drive will not remember any setup changes so you need to run a utility in the background to do it, no biggie really.

        • @SamR: Isn't it the WD Green drives that have that head parking issue?
And to a lesser extent the Red?

They park the head to achieve the "green" power consumption, but it comes at a massive cost to performance and reliability.

You fix it by using WD IDLE - but in theory doing so voids your warranty..

Actually using Google it appears the head parking on the Seagate is what many people say makes them noisy….

        • @GreatWhiteHunter: Can you explain how to use this WD IDLE? I have a home NAS running two WD Green 1TB drives for the past 5 years. They do have that head parking feature but so far the drives are running well. But for how much longer? :-/

        • @edfoo:

In a NAS that only gets accessed occassionally keep head parking on.

Its in a PC main drive, or in say a PVR, that its a big issue.

        • @GreatWhiteHunter: Yes, thanks, I understand the head parking feature. I just like to know about this WD IDLE thing, will it let me bypass the head parking?

          @edfoo:

Years ago I ran the WD IDLE thing on an old WD Green effectively. But I'm not sure if that still works or not, you'll need to look into that.

If using in a NAS, I believe Synology have their own means of killing the park issue making it much easier than installing individually in a PC and running WD IDLE. No experience with this however as I have 0 WD's in my 2 NAS's.

        • @Click_It: Ah, thanks for your explanation. Looks like it will be too much of a hassle to pull out the drives from my QNAP NAS and installing them in my PC just to run the WD IDLE.

        • @edfoo:

More info on WD IDLE here if you need it

          http://www.jzab.de/content/wdidle-bootcd

Normally gotta be accessed via boot into DOS or similar, as far as I know you can't do it in Windows…

        • @GreatWhiteHunter:

Yep that's right. DOS boot up, it was a bit of a hassle doing 1 drive, doing several would be annoying. I think there was at one stage a Windows version but it disappeared (maybe it bricked drives?).

I was refering to the WD Red drives and Seagate NAS as the original deal was centered around the WD Red. There is little reason to use a WD Red in anything other than a NAS box, they are optimsed for that purpose. My comment about sticking to REDs is strictly for their designed purpose as opposed to the Seagate NAS drives.

I am definitely in the Barrcuda camp when it comes to standard drive, I have had one WD Green and lets just say "NEVER AGAIN". Head parking aside my experience with WD Green shows that it is flaky and does not always get recognised, both in dock, in casing or in computer. I replaced it recently with a Barrcuda and no problems since.

        • @SamR: definitely a WD Green issue, and some reports with the WD Reds…not sure if they have sorted the Reds but from what I can remember it was not a design parameter for them to be aggressive with head parking.

WD Greens are not recommended for NAS boxes, and have not been recommended since the head parking issues were first revealed

I noticed the noise difference from my HGST Coolspin drives also (now owned by WD). By that I mean the Seagate NAS being louder.

Not that it bothers me, that NAS is not anywhere where I can hear it.

  • Is this supposedly same with HN deal few days ago for the 5TB? WD50EFRX? So WD50EFRX is a NAS HDD?

    • WD50EFRX is certainly a NAS drive, yes.

They're very good drives, I prefer HGST/Hitachi slightly more but aren't always easy to get. (Both made by WD)

  • Thanks ordered 2TB WD Red 3.5 for my HP micro server. Hope will work without any issues.

  • Can anyone recommend good drives for large home media server storage?

I'm running my os and all apps on ssd which is smooth as silk, but as soon as I start moving my files around on the storage WD Greens, there is a 10 second pause between every file transfer which ends up doubling the amount of time it takes to move a selection of files.

    • That'd be the hdd spinning up. These will likely be similar, it's all to help with power saving and to save strain on the hdd. I've got a WD Mycloud with a WD Red inside, and accessing it can take a couple of seconds (haven't counted) as it spins up

      • Thanks mate.

I only just built this new server last month and didn't realise these new Greens would do this, now trying to find out what actually are the best types of drives for my setup.

These green can literally hang for over 10 seconds before moving on to the next file to transfer.

        • Hmm the red only does it on the first access, then it's fine for a while

Decent price on the 4tb, most around around $250.
I just realised I received a 10% code from ebay (max $50 discount), So that works out perfectly in the end at $225 each, add the 4% cashback and I can get a couple for $215 each.
Finally I will have my Gen8 set up soon!

Bought a WD Red 4TB to replace my failing Seagate 3TB. Hope this WD is what it's hyped up to be :P

  • Only a few dollars cheaper than MSY's standard price (on WD Red 1,2,3TB)
Going to hold off for a better deal.

    • Don't forget this deal includes free delivery to your door and be careful what you wish for since the AUD seems to be heading further south and we all know what that means for hardware prices in AU ;)

      • Yeah I know (re delivery) but half the fun is venturing to MSY and risking the terrible customer service
